Critics Bash CBS for Not Casting Enough Non-White Actors

0

CBS is in hot water after revealing the lead actors for their six new TV shows.

CBS has six new shows premiering this fall featuring six white male actors. So, when entertainment chief Glenn Geller took the stage during the Television Critics Association’s press tour, Geller faced scrutiny for the lack of diversity in their 2016 – 2017 lineup.

In comparison, CBS features less diversity than their broadcast rivals, which have steadily increased the number of TV shows featuring Hispanics, African Americans and Asian-Americans.

Geller was forced to defend the broadcast giant. “We’re very mindful at CBS about the importance of diversity and inclusion,” Geller said at the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday.  “We need to do better, and we know it. In terms of leads we are less diverse than we were last year.”

It’s important to point out that even though non-white actors are not starring on the CBS TV shows, many of them were cast in supporting roles. For example, Rush Hour actor Justin Hires is featured in MacGyver, Vanessa Ferlito joined the cast of NCIS: New Orleans, and Adam Rodriguez and Aisha Tyler joined the cast of Criminal Minds.

“We showed you some photos of 16 new series regulars, 11 of them are diverse,” Geller continued. “I know they’re not leads, but 11 are diverse and that is our commitment to diversity and those just aren’t words. That is real action … I wouldn’t say we’re mitigating anything. Those 16 roles were added because the showrunners were adding roles. I think the fact that 11 of them were cast diversely shows our commitment … And I understand certainly the inclination to look at the screen and just look at leads and say, ‘Well, what’s going on? Why are you less diverse?’ But I do think that when we’re talking about diversity and inclusion, we have to also look behind the camera and there we are doing very well. Our writers are more diverse than last year, our directors – and we’re not finished booking every slot but we’re on track. We continue to put additional resources and financial support into our CBS Diversity Institute and that covers many different parts of diversity for us. That’s our showcase, and it’s kind of the gold standard, I think, in the industry. Many people are cast from it. It includes our writers’ program, it includes our directors’ program … I think you have to look in front of the camera and behind the camera. And I understand we need to do better with leads.”

However, many critics were not impressed. And many people continued to criticize CBS for their lack of diversity. “Look, I’m acknowledging we need to do better,” Geller repeated. “In terms of directors, and this is a place I would love to talk about, we’ve been getting better and better every single year about diversity among our director ranks and we have series where over half the directors are diverse. But I hear you, I really do, and I understand that we need to do better. I do want to point out though, that in the ensemble casting, we are more diverse this year than last year, and that is forward progress.”

Apparently, according to EW, Geller said “we need to do better” seven times during the press conference, and “we’ve been getting better” three times.

There are plans for major diversity in 2017 with a legal drama called Doubt starring Katherine Heigl and transgender actress Laverne Cox, who is known for her role in Orange is the New Black. In addition, there’s a new Training Day TV series featuring Justin Cornwell, who is black.

Why 2017 is Going to Be an Amazing Year for Aspiring Actors

2017 is going to be the best year ever to become an actor.

One of the biggest problems for aspiring actors is the lack of job opportunities. Actors are forced to work on smaller productions for less money. But, 2017 is going to be a huge year for aspiring actors. So, if you’re interested in becoming an actor, now is the time to get started.

According to reports, there are 500 scripted shows coming on 2017 and 71 original shows on Netflix. That means there are going to be hundreds auditions, thousands of casting calls, and dozens of job opportunities for actors in the next few months.

So why are there so many more TV shows? Well, according to FX president John Landgraf, it’s because of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, which are producing more content than they were just a few years ago.

From Vox:

In fact, the report says that Netflix has debuted or announced a stunning 71 original scripted shows — and that doesn’t even include children’s, documentary, late-night, or non-English series.

If that still doesn’t register as particularly mind-boggling, consider that 71 original shows is, as Landgraf said, more than the future programming slates of HBO, Showtime, Starz, and FX combined.

But, some people are not too excited about so much television and scripted shows. Landgraf argued in 2016 that we would hit a point where there is too much content. And this year the FX president said, “we are going to hit a peak in the scripted series business within the next two and a half years and then see a decline — by calendar ’19 at the latest.”

Until that point comes, grab your headshot, sign up for acting classes, and go get your make up done because the acting jobs are about to start rolling in.

Jennifer Lopez to Play a Drug Lord in a HBO Movie

J.Lo plans on playing a drug lord in an upcoming HBO movie.

Variety reports that Jennifer Lopez is attached to star in a feature film from the company that brought you Game of Thrones. The movie will center around the infamous drug lord Griselda Blanco, who was made famous by the Cocaine Cowboys documentary.

Jennifer Lopez said she signed on as the lead and as an executive producer of the new HBO movie and had nothing but nice things to say.

“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” said Lopez on her upcoming Home Box Office project. “The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”

Jennifer Lopez’s acting career has been on a roll recently. Lopez’s NBC cop drama Shades of Blue has entered its second season and Freeform’s critically acclaimed series The Fosters is half way through its fourth season.

Currently, Jennifer Lopez is the only person cast in the movie, which means casting directors are most likely casting the remaining roles as we speak.

Dwayne Johnson Reveals What Really Happened On Set of ‘Fast & Furious 8’

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson explains what happened on set of Fast & Furious 8.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson knows how to promote a movie. Before he became an A-list actor, The Rock was a WWF wrestler that knew how to talk trash. His quips, comments, and monologues were impressive and down right entertaining. So, when he posted a video on Instagram saying one of his co-stars on Fast & Furious 8 is a “candy ass”, The Rock was using his trash talking skills he developed years ago. Unfortunately, the film industry isn’t like the wrestling ring and Rick Farley isn’t here to save you.

After further investigation, it was believed that the “candy ass” he was referring to was Vin Diesel, with both actors’ egos allegedly clashing on set.  But now The Rock wants you to know how he really feels.

“You guys reading this know how much I believe in the idea of TEAM EFFORT. That means respecting every person, their time and their value when they step on to my set or partner with our production company. And like with any team – that’s a family – there’s gonna be conflict. Family is gonna have differences of opinion and fundamental core beliefs. To me, conflict can be a good thing, when its followed by great resolution. I was raised on healthy conflict and welcome it. And like any family, we get better from it. At the end of the day me and #F8 co-stars all agree on the most important thing: Delivering an incredible movie to the world.”

So, if you’re ready to see a fight between The Rock v. Vin Diesel, you may have to wait until Fast & Furious 8 is headed to theaters on April 14, 2017.

My FINAL WEEK of shooting #FastAndFurious. There’s no greatness ever achieved alone.. it’s always a team effort. We promised an epic prison break out for you guys and we delivered. HUGE THANK YOU to my ohana (family) stunt coordinator JJ Perry and his bad ass fearless stunt team – as well as my cousin and incredible stunt double @samoanstuntman. Thank you team for the willingness to “die hard” and drop your blood & sweat daily for our movie. #MyStuntBrothers #Loco4Life You guys reading this know how much I believe in the idea of TEAM EFFORT. Suicide Squad: Margot Robbie Reveals Why Jared Leto Scenes Were Deleted [VIDEO]

0

Margot Robbie reveals why Jared Leto’s scenes were deleted from Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad may have some really bad reviews, insane petitions, and a possible lawsuit for false advertising, but one thing everyone seems to agree upon is that Margot Robbie was amazing as Harley Quinn.

Even before the movie hit theaters, Warner Bros. was considering making a Harley Quinn spin-off starring Margot Robbie.

That being said, one of the biggest complaints of the movie is that there weren’t many scenes of Jared Leto’s The Joker.

According to recent reports, many of the Leto’s scenes were deleted. Leto said he thinks his scenes were too twisted for theaters and they could form their own R-rated spin-off movie where we will finally get to see what The Joker can really do.

Recently, Robbie openly spoke about those deleted Jared Leto scenes. Robbie said:

“There was so much of our backstory… they probably realized that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission we were on, and kind of explaining The Enchantress’ position and all that kind of stuff, and the backstory stuff — though it’s like magic… there’s a lot but it just didn’t make sense to confuse the present storyline with that.”

And after watching Suicide Squad, I can understand where she’s coming from. There was a lot going on the movie and adding an extremely long backstory would really confuse audiences.

Or, maybe this is a publicity stunt in order increase DVD sales and make more money?

FOX’s The Exorcist is now casting actors, models, and talent to work on an upcoming episode of the new TV series, which is now filming in Chicago. Casting directors are looking for an actor to play an Emissary Assistant. Talents must meet the following description:

  • EMISSARY ASSISTANT
Male, Caucasian/Hispanic/Ethnically Ambiguous, Age Range: 21-35 years old. You MUST fit the following clothing measurements in order to be considered. Unfortunately, we cannot be flexible on this as this is the only suit size left.
    SUIT: 38 Suit Size
    NECK: 15
    SLEEVE: 33
    PANTS: 33/32

About The Exorcist:

Widely regarded as the greatest horror movie ever made, “The Exorcist” broke box office records and terrified audiences around the world. Now, more than four decades after the Academy Award-nominated film, THE EXORCIST returns as a TV series.

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), THE EXORCIST is a propulsive psychological thriller following two very different priests tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession.

FATHER TOMAS ORTEGA (Alfonso Herrera, “Sense8,” “The Chosen”) is the new face of the Catholic Church: progressive, ambitious and compassionate. He runs a small but loyal parish in the suburbs of Chicago. He has no idea that his quiet life is about to change forever. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, another priest finds himself locked in a life-and-death struggle with evil. FATHER MARCUS BRENNAN (Ben Daniels, “Flesh and Bone,” “House of Cards”) is a modern-day Templar Knight, an orphan raised since childhood by the Vatican to wage war against its enemies. Father Marcus is everything Father Tomas is not: relentless, abrasive and utterly consumed by his sacred mission. Caught in the middle is the RANCE family, members of Tomas’ parish. On the surface, they’re a normal, suburban family, but all is not as it seems in this household.

The patriarch, HENRY RANCE (guest star Alan Ruck, “Spin City,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”), is slowly but surely losing his mind. Eldest daughter KATHERINE (Brianne Howey, SCREAM QUEENS) has become a recluse who refuses to leave her room. Her younger sister, CASEY (Hannah Kasulka, “The Fosters”), thinks she’s hearing strange noises coming from inside the walls.  And mother ANGELA (Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Geena Davis, “Commander in Chief,” “Thelma & Louise”) has been plagued by recurring nightmares, each more frightening than the last. Angela believes there is something in the house, a demonic presence, growing stronger by the day. Desperate, she begs Father Tomas for help, unwittingly setting the naïve young priest on a collision course with Father Marcus. Separately, each faces an insurmountable task, but together they become the only hope against an evil force that has been mobilizing for centuries. [Fox]

Fans start a Suicide Squad petition saying Warner Bros. should refund fans for falsely advertising scenes that were not in the movie.

After threatening to sue Warner Bros. for false advertising, reddit user BlackPanther 2016 has launched a petition demanding Warner Bros. give their money back.

Black Panther wrote, “WB/DC studios falsely advertised their Suicide Squad movie with specific footage/images of popular, well beloved characters such as, ‘The Joker’ and ‘Katana’ to draw millions of people in to go watch their movie, but only to find out that the advertised footage/images isn’t even featured in the actual finished product. ”

Black Panther continued by saying, “This is false advertising, blatant robbery, bait and switch.”

Black Panther followed up by pointing out seven scenes that were featured in the trailer and not shown in the actual movie.

  1. When Joker drops a grenade with his face all messed up and says, ”BYE BYE!”
  2. When Joker says, ”let me show you my toys” as he smiles in a creepy manner.
  3. When Joker bangs his head on his car window.
  4. When Joker punches the roof of his modded Infiniti G35 with a Vaydor kit.
  5. When Harley Quinn says, ”I hope you have insurance”.
  6. When Harley Quinn asks the squad what drinks they want in the pub.
  7. A beautiful shot of Katana’s eyes turning peach black.
  8. Epic slow motion shot of Katana taking in souls with her sword in a smokey fashion. (Done with fantastic visual effects that many fans just couldn’t wait to see in the actual movie – but nope, doesn’t exist in the finished product)

Panther continues by arguing that these scenes were used to lure people to the box office but, then show audiences a different movie advertised in the movie trailer.

In a matter of a few hours, dozens have signed the petition. One person wrote, “I’m signing this because I don’t like spending my hard-earned money to see a movie that was falsely advertised & misleading such as the movie “Suicide Squad””

Justin Palazzo of Greenville, Rhode Island said he was upset. “Pretty angry that this movie showed a million deleted scenes in the trailers that didn’t even make it to the movie. Movie was terrible”

You can check out the petition here.

‘Suicide Squad’ Fan to Sue for ‘False Advertising’

Suicide Squad fan threatens to sue Warner Bros. for false advertising.

Suicide Squad opened last weekend, breaking records for one of the biggest August release in history. But, at least one guy was not that impressed.

An upset moviegoer who saw Suicide Squad claims he will sue Warner Bros. for false advertising because a number of scenes used to promote the feature film didn’t actually make it into the movie.

“I’m now taking this to court,” Reddit user BlackPanther2016 wrote on r/movies. “I want my refund.”

In order to prove his point, BlackPanther2016 shared movie clips featured in the trailer that ended up not appearing in the movie, including one in which the Joker says, “I can’t wait to show you my toys.”

BlackPanther2016 argues: “… the trauma of being embarrassed as I was being kicked out and people laughing at me for wanting my refund, and also the 160 pounds of fuel money I used to drive to London from Scotland. Don’t let them bribe you with their ‘deluxe premium special directors gold extended edition supreme cut’ nonsense. You should get what they advertised as their first theatre showing and what you have paid for based on what they have showed you in their advertisements.”

This news comes after Jared Leto revealed that a large amount of Joker footage had been cut from the movie, so much so that he argued that “there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.”

“As the film stands now,” Leto asserted, “it’s much more of a supporting part than a lot of people may have assumed, but it feels like there may be more to come. I think it entirely depends upon the response of the public. If they respond to this Joker, I could imagine the Joker coming back.”
