‘Lego Batman Movie’ Dominates the Box Office

The Lego Batman Movie beat Fifty Shades Darker at the box office over the weekend, earning a jaw-dropping $55.6 million to capture box office gold. Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey, couldn’t beat its predecessor’s $85.2 million launches. As a result, the sequel had to settle for a $46.8 million debut and second place in the battle of the box office.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 2, a sequel to 2015’s John Wick, earned $30 million at the box office. That is more than double what the first movie made in its debut. As a result, John Wick has illustrated that Keanu Reeves’ new film is worthy of becoming a franchise.

“The first John Wick came out of nowhere theatrically, and we know from the home entertainment team it way over-indexed the norm,” said David Spitz, Lionsgate’s distribution chief. “Consumers loved everything about the world of John Wick.”

The Lego Batman Movie is now the biggest opening of any 2017 feature film release. The film also received high reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 91% score. Meanwhile, Fifty Shades Darker received a 10% rating on the movie review website. The critic’s consensus had this to say about Fifty Shades Darker, “Lacking enough chemistry, heat, or narrative friction to satisfy, the limp Fifty Shades Darker wants to be kinky but only serves as its own form of punishment.”

‘SNL’ Ratings Hits 6-Year Ratings Record

0

Saturday Night Live has hit their highest ratings in six years this weekend with Alec Baldwin’s record-breaking President Trump impressions. Baldwin, who portrays President Trump on the show, hosted his 17th show on Saturday, which is more than any other host in the show’s history.

The episode received a 7.2 overnight rating, which is the highest rating since 2011, CNN reports. The ratings mean 7.2% of all homes watched the show on Saturday.

CNN pointed out that when Trump himself hosted the show as a presidential candidate in November 2015, the show got a 6.6 rating.

The show’s higher ratings come not only on the night of Baldwin’s historic hosting gig but also shows Saturday Night Live’s focus on political satire.

Actress Melissa McCarthy made another surprise appearance on Saturday as White House press secretary Sean Spicer, a week after her portrayal of the White House spokesman went viral. Baldwin also reprised his role as Trump to mock his battle with the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals over his immigration ban.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7: Creators Argue Violence Was NOT Toned Down

0

The Walking Dead has been at the center of a heated controversy about the level of violence in its episode with Season 7 kicking off with skull-crushing scenes.

When viewers threatened to boycott the show arguing that The Walking Dead has gone too far since Negan joined the cast, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd explained last month that they “toned down” the violence in the next episodes following fans’ reactions to the show.

But the core of the Walking Dead fans bashed the show for even considering reducing the violence.

As a result, Scott Gimple and executive producer Greg Nicotero have stepped up to make it clear that they would never compromise their creative vision with restrictions on the level gore. Those who tune into The Walking Dead for violence can once again be excited to watch the hit Sunday series.

Gimple’s explanation is that the rest of Season 7 is less violent than the premiere only because only the premiere justified so much violence.

“The violence in the premiere was pronounced for a reason. The awfulness of what happened to the characters was very specific to that episode and the beginning of this whole new story. I don’t think that’s the base level of violence that necessarily should be on the show. It should be specific to a story and a purpose, and there was a purpose of traumatizing these characters to a point where maybe they would have been docile for the rest of their lives, which was Negan’s point.”

Nicotero argues that the show will never restrict themselves.

“As brutal as that episode 1 was, it’s still part of our storytelling bible, which is what the world is about. I don’t think we would ever edit ourselves, and I think — even after looking at that episode 1 again — as tough as it was for people to watch, I don’t think we would have done it any differently. I don’t think we’ll ever pull ourselves back. There is definitely a difference between violence against walkers and human on human violence, but truthfully, we’re serving our story.”

Match.com’s ‘The Walking Dead’ Viewing Party is Finally Here!

0

To go along with Sunday’s mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead, Match.com is launching a new entertainment-driven platform targeted at bringing singles together over their love of a particular TV show.

“We realized that with singles in America today, one of the things that they connect on the most is the shows they watch and they love, and we wanted to figure out how to replicate what’s happening in the real world on the Match site and on the app,” explained Match.com CEO Mandy Ginsberg.

When AMC airs on TV, Match.com will invite their subscribers to talk about the how in a “live online viewing party” where users can connect with other singles interested in The Walking Dead.

After testing on previous episodes of The Walking Dead and Scandal, where 4 out of 5 people at the viewing party stayed for the entire hour-long broadcast. Also, Match found a demographic of people interested in the platform.

“We were a little nervous because we thought people might be inappropriate or say things that we’d have to monitor, but the fact of the matter is we didn’t need to because people were so into the show and were so funny in talking about what could happen, what they liked, what they didn’t like, it was so organic,” Ginsberg said.  “It was like they were sitting at brunch with a bunch of friends and talking about what happened on ‘Scandal’ last night.”

The idea came after a study that Match.com conducted on singles in America, their dating habits, and viewing habits. The results of the survey found “millennials are 270% more likely than those of other generations to be turned on by someone who watches the same shows as they do.”

As a result of these findings, Ginsberg said Match.com  is incorporating more TV shows into their platform to help singles make a new connection in the “entertainment-led society”.

“People didn’t used to talk about series, but now we all sit down and blow through them pretty quickly, so we think about shows in terms of series, and no one talked like that five years ago,” Ginsberg said. “If we can have people connect over series, that’s something we’re very excited about, I think it could change the game in terms of starting real conversations.”

‘Dear White People’ Creator FIRES BACK At Critics

0

The backlash to filmmaker Justin Simien’s debut feature film Dear White People has reached a new level as YouTubers have left disparaging comments about African Americans and the Netflix organization.

In a post on Medium titled “Why Did I Name It “Dear White People?'” Simien explained in detail the history of the project, which has turned into a 10-episode TV series for Netflix, which will air this April.

Simien revealed that he knew the title was “provocative” but also necessary to “break through the clutter” back when he came up with the idea in 2009.

“Currently the clip has received [sic] 300k dislikes compared to 34k likes, despite trending in Youtube’s top 10 for days,” Simien wrote. “This kind of negatively weighted ratio is a classic, and frankly transparent tell that automated tools for harassment, perfected during the latest election cycle, were at play.”

The movie is not only affected by bots and mass dislikes that have been tossed at Simien. Simien has also been targeted and affected by racist comments on Twitter.

“Among the now perfunctory ‘what if there was a dear black people’ comments, were accusations that I, and by association Netflix, were promoting a call for ‘white genocide,’” he said. “Complaints that racism isn’t real, sat beside comments calling me a n*****. Assertions that all black people do is whine and destroy property were wedged between threats that the alt right would burn this country to the ground if we kept promoting ‘white hate. Being called a n***** as well as being called the sole cause of the racism I was complaining about was a sort of recurring theme.”

Members of the alternative right are calling for a boycott of the show and the cancellation of Netflix subscriptions, though, as Simien pointed out, the stock price of Netflix has gone up following the release of ‘Dear White People’ trailer.

“Even though I have the wherewithal to recognize their hatred as just a knee jerk attempt to avoid experiencing the deep pain of feeling powerless, I’ll be damned if I allow for someone else’s pain to become my prison,” he concluded.

Buckle your seat belt; Dear White People premieres on Netflix on Friday, April 28th.
