Film Industry Added THOUSANDS of New Georgia Jobs in 2016

A new report by the Motion Picture Association of America highlights how Hollywood’s biggest filmmakers have impacted Georgia.

Georgia is now essentially the filmmaking capital of the world beating California, New York, Louisiana, and even the United Kingdom. But, how has that impacted the men and women who live in Georgia?

Thanks to the MPAA we may finally know how. According to the report, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, hired nearly 1,400 local crew and extras and spent $75 million across the state.

Gifted hired 750 local cast and extras and spent an average of $200,000 per day on expenditures to local businesses. Fate of the Furious contributed over $65 million to Georgia’s economy, employing over 1,600 local workers.

Also, Diary of a Wimpy Kid generated more than $14 million in local economic activity, hiring nearly 2,000 local workers.

Overall, the film and television industry directly hired over 25,000 people from Georgia and paid more than $1.7 billion in wages. There were over 9,000 production-related jobs in 2016 alone. The incentive program in Georgia is the biggest motivator that drives productions to Georgia, resulting in job growth and economic development.

Production for the new season of 13 Reasons Why is heating up.

About 13 Reasons Why:

The TV series is a mystery series based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and adapted for television by Brian Yorkey. Mostly, the show centers around a high school student, Clay Jensen, and his friend, Hannah Baker, who committed suicide after suffering a series of demoralizing circumstances, brought on by select individuals at her school. A box of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah before her death details thirteen reasons why she ended her life.

Diana Son and Brian Yorkey worked as co-showrunners on the series. The first season of thirteen episodes. Produced by July Moon Productions, Kicked to the Curb Productions, Anonymous Content, and Paramount Television, the show originally planned on having Selena Gomez star in the show.

The series received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences. That said, the show attracted controversy over the series’ graphic depiction of issues such as suicide and rape, along with other mature content. In May 2017, it was announced the series had been renewed for a second season, scheduled to premiere in 2018.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Barbara Fiorentino discussed how she feels to see reality TV stars take acting jobs.

“I kind of had a bee in my bonnet about air space being taken up by real people when there are wonderful actors out there who needed jobs,” she says.

Florentine added,  “From the start, I’ve had an issue with reality television, and even more so with dating shows, just because I think it exploits women, and men as well—and just the idea of intimacy and love, and how that can evolve.”

Georgia is Doing Something Incredible to BOOST Their Film Industry

Despite being the number one filming location for movies in the world, Georgia is planning on expanding their film industry.

According to reports, the newly created DeKalb County Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Commission is planning on expanding the county’s local entertainment industry.

The Dekalb Board of Commissioners voted 7-0 on Tuesday to spend $205,000 per year for the film commission, which will include one full-time and five part-time positions.

The commission will follow in the footsteps of the Atlanta and Savannah film commissions, according to Andrew Greenberg, the chairman of the commission’s advisory board.

“DeKalb has a lot to make it attractive to entertainment businesses. Unfortunately, most people here and elsewhere are unaware,” said Greenberg, who is also executive director of the Georgia Game Developers Association. “Atlanta and Savannah have done amazing jobs spreading the word about what they have to offer. Now it is DeKalb’s turn to do the same.”

There are currently three movie studios in DeKalb including Blackhall Studios, Third Rail Studios, and Eagle Rock Studios. Also, some of Hollywood’s biggest films are now shooting in DeKalb including Godzilla: King of Monsters and Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage.

The commission’s goals are to create more jobs in the entertainment industry, grow entertainment-related businesses and market the county to workers, residents, and visitors.

This news comes after a new studio found Georgia was the filming location for not only the most movies but the biggest movies in the world. As a result, Georgia’s movie industry is now bigger than Hollywood.

Netflix Cancels ‘The Get Down’ After Only One Season

0

Say goodbye to The Get Down.

While Project Casting was one of the first news outlets to report the open casting call for lead roles in the TV series, it is ironic to say that The Get Down is getting canceled.

Debuting last summer, with the second half of season 1 premiering in April, The Get Down was set in New York City during the late 1970s and focused on the rise of hip hop experienced by a group of teens. Production has problems from the onset. In fact, the show’s original showrunner Shawn Ryan departed early on and filming was shut down several times. In addition, it was Netflix’s most expensive series ever at a reported $120 million to produce.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, co-creator Luhrmann explained why it was “unlikely” that The Get Down would return to production “in the immediate future.”

“When I was asked to come to the center of The Get Down to help realize it, I had to defer a film directing commitment for at least two years,” he said. “This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have been tremendous partners and supporters of the show. It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions. I feel so deeply connected to all those who I have worked and collaborated with on this remarkable experience.”

That said, he did suggest a possibility of the show heading in a new direction. “All sorts of things have been thrown around for the future… even a stage show (can you imagine that? I can, concert version anyone? Next summer? Just saying.),” he wrote. “But the simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life. Since The Get Down stopped, I have actually been spending the last few months preparing my new cinematic work.”

Luhrmann has been optimistic about a second season. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “We have great plans moving forward.” He did say he would be taking a step back because of other commitments. “I’ll be hands-on to the extent that an uncle would be, as opposed to a father figure,” he noted.

About 13 Reasons Why:

Thirteen Reasons Why is the new Selena Gomez TV series for Netflix. The series was created and written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Brian Yorkey. The show follows a boy named Clay after he receives a shoe box of cassette tapes from his late classmate and crush Hannah after she recently committed suicide. On the tapes, which are mailed with instructions to pass along from one student to another, Hannah explains to 12 peers how they each played a role in her death, by giving 13 reasons explaining why she took her life.

Selena Gomez is co-producing alongside her mother Mandy. She opened up to Variety about the experience, saying: “She’s got incredible taste in a weird, cool way.
