A 2012 survey by LinkedIn, acting was in the top 10 list of “dream jobs” tied with an Olympic athlete, and it makes sense. You hang out with celebrities, go to most significant events, and get paid millions to be on TV and movie screens. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be on The Walking Dead.

But, many people fail to understand how terrible it can be to work on set including the demanding work hours of 16 to 17 hours per day for six days a week.

In a recent interview with VICE, film crew workers, actors and stagehands revealed what it is like to work on set and it is pretty exciting.

Set on Fire

One stunt actor revealed what it was like to get set on fire in a stunt that went wrong. “I was on fire for three and a half minutes, and suddenly, for this two or three-second beat, I thought ‘This is the hottest I’ve ever been in my life.’ I ended up with a burn that wrapped around my entire wrist. It was the biggest blister I’ve ever seen in my life. And they’re going ‘Are you OK?’ ‘Yep, fine.’’” He later added, “ I wish I hadn’t said I was OK.’ I mean, it’s not like we’re being cavalier. But if the production is spending $80,000 an hour, do you want to be the guy who’s holding it up?”

The actor that couldn’t stay awake

But, that is not the only horror story. One production assistant revealed an actor that was “totally f-d up.”

The assistant explains, “First off, he showed up 45 minutes late. And in the makeup trailer, he’s a fucking hot mess right from the get-go. So we finally manage to get his hair and makeup done, and he f–k off to his trailer and falls asleep.”

The actor fell asleep so much on camera producers had to call an ambulance to get the actor examined.

“And some actors, they think they’re irreplaceable. Because they’re the face of it, that they can get away with whatever they want. And we let them think that’s how it is. But trust me: people get recast all. The. Time.”

The weird smelling tea

In another story by “Brad” a grip, one A-list actor didn’t even memorize his lines for the movie. “He also didn’t memorize his lines. We had to cue card everything. He had to have his own room where he would just sit and meditate and drink this weird-smelling tea. He wasn’t a primadonna, he just didn’t give a s—t about the production.”

In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, Tom Hardy spoke openly about transforming your body for an acting job. Hardy explained that it was tough to pack on muscle on to his naturally thin 5’9 frame so he can play Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. It was so tough that he did not plan on doing it again for his new TV series Taboo.

“I don’t want to give too much away about it, but there’s definitely a transformation with that role. I don’t know if it’s as drastic as Bane. I’ve probably damaged my body too much. I’m only little! If I keep putting on weight I’ll collapse like a house of cards under too much pressure.”

The 39-year-old actor explained how he believes age makes a huge difference in the toll that hardcore physical training has on your body, especially when it’s impossible to stick to a gym schedule to maintain your fitness.

“I think you pay the price with any drastic physical changes. It was alright when I was younger, to put myself under that kind of duress, but I think as you get into your 40s you have to be more mindful of the rapid training, packing on a lot of weight and getting physical, and then not having enough time to keep training because you’re busy filming, so your body is swimming in two different directions at the same time. And then after the film I’m tired, and you maybe have to change your shape again and go back to your normal size for the next film.”

Hardy went on to explain that he does not consider his body “damaged” but, he still has aches and pains from his time transforming his body for various acting jobs.

“To go from one extreme to another has a cost. I haven’t damaged my body, but I’m certainly a bit achier than I used to be! I kind of miss it. Compared to Christian Bale I’ve been by no means extreme in my body changes, but for what little I’ve done, yeah, I certainly have joints that click that probably shouldn’t click, you know what I mean? And carrying my children is a little bit harder than it used to be—but don’t tell them!”

Acting is tough. You have to memorize lines, understand the physical choreography for a scene, and continue to network outside of the stage. Now, imagine doing all of this with a disability.

Autism spectrum disorder affects the nervous system. The range and severity of the disease can vary. Common symptoms include difficulty with communication, social interactions, obsessive interests and repetitive behaviors.

In a video by Great Big Story, star of the professional production “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” is making history as the first actor with autism cast in the play’s lead. This is huge. Rowe is taking on the role of Christopher Boone, a character who demonstrates autistic behaviors. Rowe’s goal is changing the narrative that actors with disabilities can still do the job and perhaps open the doors for other actors with autism.
