‘Westworld’ Star Jeffrey Wright: “People are ignorant as f*** about what it means to be an actor”

Westworld actor Jeffrey Wright has appeared in dozens of award-winning feature films and he takes his job seriously.

In an interview with Newsweek, Wright discussed his new Netflix movie Hold The Dark with Alexander Skarsgard and Riley Keough. He argued that people do not know what it takes to work as an actor.

“People are ignorant as f*** about what it means to be an actor, for the most part. I’m not talking about a celebrity. For me, an actor is a person who makes characters like a cobbler makes shoes. All these other trappings, and all this other bullshit that people are fascinated by, I could give a f*** about,” he told Newsweek.

“All the trappings of fame, I never thought about that,” he added. Wright does not really entertain the idea of making a lot of money as an actor. “When I started off as an actor, the last thing I wanted to do in the world was make money,” Wright, 52, said. “I was under the impression, when I started off as an actor, that the more money I made the more it would diminish from my creativity and my capacity to be an artist.”

But his philosophy on getting paid for acting changed once he became a father. He went on to star on blockbusters such as The Hunger Games and Boardwalk Empire. 

Growing up in Washington, D.C. during the Civil Rights movement had an impact on him and he is not afraid to voice his opinions. He explained, “It’s a weird f***ing time, and I can’t wait for this season to die and the next season to be born. There’s no obligation for actors to speak out, but, for me, it’s what I’ve always done and it’s what I will continue to do.”

According to Comicbook.com, Warner Bros. is filming the upcoming Joker movie under the code-name “Romeo”. According to reports, the upcoming feature film will center around the Joker as an ’80s comedian, who turns to a life of crime after his stand-up career fails. The upcoming Joker movie will be executive produced by Martin Scorsese with Todd Phillips directing the project and Joaquin Phoenix starring in the movie.

The movie also features Zazie Beetz, Joaquin Phoenix, and Robert De Niro.

Will be a NIGHT SHOOT on Sunday 9/30 (approx 2pm-4am).

HAIR LENGTH IS IMPORTANT**
This film is set in 1981 so we need men with a bit of length to their hair. Hair must be a bit over the ears in order to be the right length for the film. No shaved hair on sides & back, no hip present day haircuts, no 1950s haircuts, not too long hair either. Black men must have small- medium afros, no fades, line-ups or edging. No shaved heads! Men MAY be asked to be clean shaven, so must be comfortable with that.

Wardrobe fittings will be Tuesday 9/25, Wednesday 9/26 in Brooklyn.

Peter Dinklage Reveals What It’s Like to Be a Dwarf Actor in Hollywood

Peter Dinklage opens up about being famous in Hollywood and how opportunities have changed for dwarf actors.

Peter Dinklage plays one of the most famous little actors of all time Hervé Villechaize in HBO Films’ My Dinner with Hervé. Villachaize is best known for playing Tattoo on Fantasy Island and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dinklage discusses how things have changed for small actors since Villachaize’s death in 1993.

Dinklage admits the hardest part of playing Villachaize was keeping up with the actor’s energy. He explains, “Hervé lived pretty hard and I had to match his energy. And during a lot of the film, he doesn’t feel physical very well at all. So it was those two things. He’s such a complicated man. He was such a bright light and everybody around him loved him so dearly. But he burned too brightly. Obviously, it’s a common tragedy in Hollywood. But he lived much longer than anybody expected him too. He was also in a tremendous amount of pain due to his dwarfism, both physical and spiritual, and he just couldn’t take it anymore.”

When asked if he believed that little actors have more opportunities now, Dinklage says, “I would like to think so. I try to be optimistic about it. I never really set out to change the parameters of casting. I just like good writing. The fame thing for me is a little hard. I don’t enjoy it… But yes, I’d like to think more opportunities are out there, but cynically it’s hard to speak to it without sounding like I’m not being critical of somebody else’s choices. I just know what I want in my career and I respect the choices of actors who are my size, or not, make. And I understand bills have to be paid. But it does perpetuate things. Not to get too political about it, but it’s a stereotype that still exists. Dwarf tossing still exists. There are still people of my size dressing up as elves at Christmas time. And if everybody continues to do that, then it won’t stop. But my daughter doesn’t think I’m a mythical creature. Unicorns don’t exist, but I do. It’s tricky, what we put out there, to perpetuate for future generations.”

Keegan-Michael Key reveals how comedic acting led to more serious acting jobs and roles in Hollywood.

Keegan-Michael Key made a name for himself first starring in Mad TV and later in the sketch comedy series Key & Peele, which ran on Comedy Central for five seasons. Since the series ended in 2015, one of the stars of the show, Jordan Peele, won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for a film that was also his directorial debut, Get Out. Meanwhile, Keegan-Michael Key has been working on his acting skills and appearing in movies outside of comedy. In 2017, he appeared in the Public Theater’s production of Hamlet starring Oscar Isaac. This year, Keegan-Michael Key switched it up once again appearing in the action film Predators. He spoke to the New York Times about growing as an actor and working without Jordan Peele.

When it comes to working in front of the screen, Key admits that he feels that he is never on top of his game without Jordan Peele. He explains, “I felt like I was at my absolute best with the best possible partner. There was an alchemy there that will never happen again. I will admit that there is a certain amount of trepidation to moving forward and going: ‘How naked do I want to be in front of people? What will it cost me to show who I truly feel I am to audiences?’”

Key admits sketch comedy made him into a star but, he was not happy with that aspect of acting. He confesses,  “Part of it’s the genre, in that it’s going: ‘Well, you’re not asking for me to be me. You’re asking to see wigs and mustaches and hunchbacks and one eye and different accents.’ But also, I’m an adult male still trying to discover who I am. And sometimes it’s the little pedestrian questions like: ‘Do I like mint chocolate chip ice cream? Or do I eat it because somebody else liked it and I felt like I was supposed to like it or people weren’t going to like me?’ Part of why I’ve always been a very good actor is I’m very good at taking direction. I don’t know what I want, but I’ll do whatever I can to give you what you want.”

When asked about why Key describes comedy as a “19-year detour,” Key explains,  “I was on my way to doing dramatic and classical work in Detroit, and I met a bunch of real fun actors, and they were all performing at Second City. And I thought: ‘Well, I feel like I have a facility for comedy. I should go audition for this place.’ And I got in, and that was the beginning of this other path. So from June or July 1997 until October 2015, that was my life. I enjoyed it and I learned so much from it. But then you just start getting itchy.”
