A remake of the hit 1996 blockbuster tornado movie “Twister” is coming soon. According to reports, the upcoming remake will be directed by “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski. Frank Marshall is producing the film and the studios are currently hiring a screenwriter to work on the project.
The original “Twister” movie starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as two storm chasers in the midwest whose relationship is on shaky ground but work together to create a weather alert system. However, the only way they can do it is by chasing deadly tornados. Plot details for the next movie were not released.
The 1996 movie made $494 million worldwide at the box office and nominated for two Oscars including Best Visual Effects.
Jamie Foxx is getting ready for what could potentially be another Oscar-winning biopic. The actor confirmed he will star as Mike Tyson in an upcoming film.
“It’s a definitive yes,” Foxx said in an interview on Wednesday (June 17). “Doing biographies is a tough things sometimes it takes 20 years to get ’em done but we officially got the real ball rolling.”
White actresses call for animated shows to hire Black actors to play Black characters.
Amid the ongoing Black Lives Matter conversation, actresses Kristen Bell and Jenny Slate announced Wednesday they will no longer voice mixed-race characters on animated series, so those roles can be given to Black actors.
Jenny Slate first created the shift when she announced she would stop voicing Missy Foreman-Greenwald, the character she’s played on Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth’ since the show debuted on Netflix in 2017.
The actress said she previously told her self that she was allowed to play the character because her mother was Jewish and white, just like her own mother. She realized that Black characters should be played by Black actors.
“I acknowledge how my original reasoning was flawed,” Slate said, “that it existed as an example of white privilege and unjust allowances made within a system of societal white supremacy, and that in me playing ‘Missy,’ I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people.”
She apologized to anyone she’d hurt and promised to take better actions in the future.
Nick Kroll, one of the show’s creator said, “We wholeheartedly agree.” Kroll apologized for the show’s decision to cast a white actor in the role and promised to do better for the show’s character.
“We are proud of the representation Missy has offered cerebral, sensitive women of color, and we plan to continue that representation and further grow Missy’s character as we recast a Black actor to play her,” he said.
Netflix renewed the series in July and the show was renewing, which aired its third season last year, through the sixth season.
Jenny Slate is not alone.Bell plays Molly on Apple TV+’s new series ‘Central Park’. In a statement from the show, she said the “entire creative team recognizes that the casting of Molly is an opportunity to get representation right — to cast a Black or mixed race actress and give Molly a voice that resonates with all of the nuance and experiences of the character as we’ve drawn her.” They added Bell would continue to be part of the show.
Bell released her own statement saying she showed a “lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege” and considered the casting “wrong”.
Zendaya opens up on being a young black actress in Hollywood and her “ultimate goal” to create opportunities for Black talent.
Recently, Zendaya joined Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Janelle Monáe, Helena Bonham Carter, and Rose Byrne for the Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable, where she opened up about being a young Black actress in Hollywood.
Zendaya was a teenager when she got her first big break on the Disney Channel’s‘Shake It Up.’ The actress revealed she has a “heavy responsibility” by having a large fan base over the years.
“I have a heavy responsibility on my shoulders, but I’m appreciative of that because, with that, there’s a lot of good that I can do, and I know who is watching,” the Spider-Man: Homecoming star shared. “Now more than ever, specifically with Black Lives Matter and everything, I feel an obligation to make sure that I’m aware and putting out the right things and in line with organizers and people who are on the ground.”
Zendaya has avoided being typecast over the years, and she explained before HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ that she did not know what was next for her acting career.
“I think, like a lot of artists, I’m my biggest critic, so some of it was internal — not wanting to make a mistake or worrying that maybe I didn’t have the room to make a mistake and want to make the right next move. But I also wanted to prove myself,” she noted. “When Euphoria came along, I was very grateful because all those fears melted away, and I felt like it was something that I had to be a part of. So the fear became just, like, push yourself. If you go to work and you’re scared, that’s a good thing. You should be worried about whether you can do it.”

She further explained what it means for her to not “make a mistake.” saying, “It’s a constant thing. Being a young Disney actor, that’s one level, being a young Black woman is one level, and then being very hard on myself is another level. It’s also just a personal fear,” she explained. “I want to do a good job, and sometimes that can cause you to be fearful of things. But I will say that there’s something that happens when a special character comes along, for me at least, and those fears melt away. They don’t come back until it starts airing, which is when I started to get a little scared again. But now I’m excited to go back because the motivation is to work harder and become a better actress. I just want to get better.”
Zendaya says she pushed her agents to get her auditions, even if the role was not necessarily written for a Black woman. She said while that is still “absolutely” the case, she wanted to acknowledge her privilege.
“I also think it’s important being a light-skinned woman to recognize my privilege in that sense as well and make sure that I’m not taking up space where I don’t need to,” she notes.
“I think that’s been a choice for myself. Our creator [Sam Levinson] wrote Rue based off his own experiences with addiction, and he is a white man so that Rue could have been that. Rue had no description,” Zendaya revealed. She said her “ultimate goal” is to create opportunities for more Black people in the entertainment industry.
“I’m very grateful, and hopefully, I’ll be in a space like these ladies where I can create things and make space for women who look like me and women who don’t look like me,” she added. “That’s the ultimate goal, to make room, [because] for a lot of Black creatives, it’s not a lack of talent but a lack of opportunity.”
Following the killing of George Floyd by police officers, there is a new Black renaissance we have not seen since the Civil Rights Movement of the late 60s and 70s. Now, after many Hollywood studios announced their support for Black Lives Matter, writers are calling for better accountability and the end of systemic racism in the film industry.
According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, Black writers are looking for Hollywood to redo their hiring practices to allow for more progress among writers and content creators of color in the industry.
“We Black writers who have ‘made it’ in Hollywood have still been denied jobs at all levels, passed over for opportunities we were qualified for, rejected from writers’ rooms because of a ‘lack of experience,’ unsupported when seeking to create content specifically for Black audiences, critically underpaid and mistreated compared to white counterparts, and historically ignored during awards season,” the CBW wrote in the letter.
YouTube is spending $100 million to support Black creators. “At YouTube, we believe Black lives matter, and we all need to do more to dismantle systemic racism,” YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki wrote in a blog post where she revealed the multiyear fund “dedicated to amplifying and developing the voices of Black creators and artists and their stories.”
“The execution of George Floyd — and Breonna Taylor and Ahmad Arbery — has led to unprecedented protests for racial justice in every part of our nation — and globally. And it started in part because 17-year-old Darnella Frazier defiantly and courageously recorded the video that has forced us all to confront what we were seeing and name it,” said Malika Saada Saar, a civil and human rights lawyer and social impact human rights lead at YouTube. “Video can be a powerful human rights tool for bearing witness to injustice, and Bear Witness, Take Action will be part of that hope and urgent call for change.”

Netflix ordered #blackAF (originally titled Black Excellence) as the first series under Barris’ deal with them. Announcing the production of the show, Netflix said, “Inspired by Barris’ irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture, Black Excellence looks to pull the curtain back and reboot the ‘family sitcom’ in a way we’ve never seen before.”
BlackAF received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 41% based on 22 reviews, with an average rating of 6.96/10. The website’s critical consensus states: “Solid one-liners and some sharp social critiques can’t save #blackaf from feeling more like a stale retread than a fresh step forward for creator Kenya Barris.”
Barris is arguably one of the most powerful content creators in Hollywood. The news for renewal comes after Deadline reports he was teaming up with Pharrell Williams to develop a Juneteenth musical feature for Netflix. He explained to Deadline, “I won’t really, really, really get into it until we’re in the room because I want it to be fresh, but I definitely know I want to talk about real shit. We want it to be really special.”
#BlackAF is a comedic and honest perspective to parenting as a Black man in Hollywood and explores race, relationships, and culture. The series explores the world of becoming a rich Black family and trying to get it right while exploring cultural norms.
Barris, Jones, and Hale Rothstein exec produce the single-camera comedy through Barris’ production company, Khalabo Ink Society.

“Unsubscribe”, A scary movie filmed on video-conferencing app Zoom topped the US box office with a $0 budget.
The movie industry has completed changed due to the Coronavirus COVID-19. The movie industry is attempting to resume production. But, one filmmaker filmed a horror movie on Zoom with literally no budget and topped the US box office.
The movie follows five YouTubers who join a video conference call before they are haunted by a disturbing figure. The movie is only 29 minutes long and each actor volunteered to work for free, and the movie can be rented through Vimeo.
Starring Eric Tabach (“Love Is Strange”), Charlie Tahan (“Ozark“, “I Am Legend”), Michelle Khare (HBO Max’s “Karma“), Zach Kornfeld (The Try Guys), Thomas Brag (Yes Theory), Sneako, Lauren Brodauf, and Tyler Brash. The movie is written and directed by Christian Nilsson.
But it begs the question, how does a low-budget movie with no budget, make the top of the box office? Apparently, the lack of competition has helped. The industry’s downturn allowed for “Unsubscribe” to reach number one in the box office due to “Four Walling”.
“Four walling is when distributors rent out a movie theatre and buy all the seats,” Rabach told the BBC. “So they pay a flat fee to the theatre, and any money they make off seats goes straight into their pockets. The moment we realized that was an option of distribution, we went for it.”
While the filmmakers did not make any money, it did make $25,000 at the box office on June 10, according to Box Office Mojo, as several theaters bought tickets for empty screenings.Rabach admits they did lose some money making the movie due to the four-walling loophole, but it is clear, a movie with no budget won the box office.
One of the best ways to get started in the film industry is arguably getting a job as a background actor. The position requires little to no acting experience and gives aspiring actors, filmmakers, and producers the opportunity to see what it is like to work on a production. However, due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 guidelines, movie and TV extras could become a thing of the past replaced with CGI and smaller scenes.

‘30 Rock‘ blackface episodes are being removed from streaming platforms.
Networks around the world are changing their programming following the growing Black Lives Matter protests. As a result, Tina Fey has asked several episodes of the show ’30 Rock’ get removed from syndication due to the use of blackface.
According to Variety, Fey, and the show’s co-creator Robert Carlock wrote to the streaming platforms hosting the show to ask for the removal of four episodes.
The note reads, “As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation. I understand now that ‘intent’ is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologize for pain they have caused. Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request.”
’30 Rock’ aired from 2006 to 2013, with a core cast including Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski, Tracy Morgan and Tina Fey. The show became popular for its guest stars and humor. Guests include Oprah Winfrey, Matt Damon and Jennifer Aniston. The removed episodes featured Krakowski and guest actor Jon Hamm wearing blackface.
All of the episodes will be removed, while some were already removed from streaming platforms. Viewers will no longer be able to purchase the episodes on iTunes or Google Play.
On Juneteeth, industry actors and directors including Sterling K. Brown, Gabrielle Union, Cynthia Erivo, Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, Nia DaCosta, Trevor Noah, Lena Waithe, Justin Simien, Lee Daniels, Dee Rees, Franklin Leonard, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Niecy Nash, Thandie Newton, Janet Mock, and others signed their names to an artists’ statement for the collective Black Artists for Freedom.
The goal is to “amplify the movement’s work and to call out our own industries for what they are: institutions the promote colonialism, capitalism and racism, and that function in exploitative and destructive ways.” In addition, the statement adds those signed are looking to “eliminate” racist stereotypes of Black people in media.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 11 out of 12 tv pilots were unable to complete production due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. NBC has decided they will film five pilots this season.
Once it is safe to resume production, NBC has picked five top pilots to film this fall. They are reportedly the “most promising of all of NBC’s drama and comedy scripts”. The shows include the following:
Langdon – a drama based on the Dan Brown novels
Ordinary Joe – Matt Reeves drama exploring three parallel lives of the leading star
Grand Crew – a comedy based around a group of Black friends.
NBC, ABC, and CBS are betting on production on new and returning series to resume sooner rather than later once production can resume in shooting locations including Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. Currently, the various guilds are figuring out the best safety protocols to restart productions.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the film industry, especially, pilot season. A majority of the 50 pilots, which are the opportunity for unemployed actors to land major roles on TV shows, were not completed. Networks were forced to order new scripts to fit in line with the Coronavirus filming guidelines. Networks also handed out series to shows that had limited footage.
Many guilds including SAG-AFTRA, the Directors Guild, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and the Cinematographers Guild released rules planned to protect their guild members from infection. However, many of the guidelines suggest guidelines that say to reduce background extras and increase production expenses to hire background actors.
