What It’s Like to Audition for Netflix’s ‘Hollywood’

Here’s what it’s like to audition for Netflix’s Hollywood

A recent series by Netflix called Netflix Queue, is discussing and touching on how actors got their big breaks in Hollywood. As we recently touched on in our last article, What It’s Like to Audition for Spike Lee, actor Jeremy Pope talked about getting cast in Netflix’s Hollywood.

In Netflix’s Hollywood Pope plays an aspiring screenwriter Archie Coleman on the series and was nominated for two Tony Awards in the same year. Pope was trying to keep up with his Broadway schedule when his agent called him about auditioning for Hollywood.

He explains, ““My role in Hollywood came at the craziest of times. It was the week of the Tony Awards that I got the call. I was nominated for two Tonys that year, for Choir Boy and Ain’t Too Proud. I was still performing in Ain’t Too Proud, and we were just trying to make it through eight shows a week to get to the Tonys that Sunday.

I remember my agent calling me up, and he went, “Hey, we got this self-tape audition for an untitled Ryan Murphy project. There’s no script attached to it. They sent some dummy sides your way. Take a look at it — they would like the tape as soon as you can get it.”

I remember wanting to get frustrated, but I was like, You know what, I’m not going to put that energy into it, because I don’t even have that energy. So, maybe an hour or so before we performed Ain’t Too Proud, I had a friend in the cast help me with this self-tape backstage. I honestly didn’t think about it twice; I just sent it over because this was a preliminary audition, where the casting agent wants to get familiar with you, and then you actually get the material later. I wasn’t trying to invest too much time into it. The next day, I got a call that Ryan Murphy was interested in my tape and had just offered me this role.”

While Pope explains the Netflix series would be a huge opportunity, he found it hard to get excited about the acting job because of the Tony Awards. He says, ”I was just trying not to get too excited or invested because I needed more information. It was the Saturday before the Tony Awards, and Ryan and I met up for lunch. We had a really great conversation. He told me about the series Hollywood and who he thought Archie was. I think at the time, he was just finishing writing Episode 2 with Ian Brennan, so he was open to collaborating and hearing what my thoughts were in creating the character. I trusted Ryan and said yes to the project based on that conversation.”

Here’s what it is really like to audition for Spike Lee.

Spike Lee is one of the biggest directors in filmmaking history. From his early work to his latest award-winning productions, Spike Lee’s influence is world-renowned. So, when an actor gets the chance to audition in front of Spike Lee, it is a huge opportunity, leading to an actor’s big break.

Reflecting on her “big break” with Netflix Queue, the Spode-Man: Homecoming star, Laura Harrier, remembers what it was like.

 “I was on vacation in Greece — this must’ve been the summer of 2017 — and I was sitting on a beach with my friends, on an island, drinking rosé,” she explains.

“And I got a phone call from a number that I didn’t recognize. I picked up, and the very familiar voice on the other end said, ‘Laura, this is Spike Lee.’ I honestly thought someone was playing a trick on me. It was his voice. Everyone knows what Spike Lee sounds like. And so I said, ‘Hello, hi. Do you have the wrong number?’ And he replied, ‘So, I want to meet you for my new movie.’ I said, ‘Of course. Oh my God, yes, absolutely. I’m actually in Europe right now, but I’ll be back in New York next week. I would love to meet with you as soon as possible.’ He goes, ‘No, I need to see you Tuesday.’ I replied, ‘Spike, it’s Sunday.’ And he goes, ‘See you Tuesday. Vacation’s over. Bye.’ And then he hung up. I turned to my friends and said, ‘I have to get off this island.’ I had to get on a ferry to Athens the next morning and then catch the next flight to New York. I made my way back within 24 hours.”

She traveled back to the United States in less than 24 hours; Harrier expected the audition to be a standard experience. However, it was not normal at all.

She says,  “The next day, I went and met Spike for the first time and did this audition. It was a crazy audition. Normally, you walk in expecting to read with another actor, and the director is usually there watching and taking notes or giving you suggestions. I walk into the room, and it’s just Spike and me. He said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to read the scene with you.’ So I did my audition with Spike, which was terrifying. It turned into this 45-minute improv, and it just went all over the place. We were talking about Sal’s Pizzeria at one point. We finally wrapped, and I got the part the next day.”

Don Cheadle on Acting: “Self-care is real and listening to yourself and taking care of that is really real”

Don Cheadle opens up about his acting career and why self-care is so important.

Don Cheadle only had two hours to decide to take the role of War Machine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, outside of superhero movies, he has a long history of playing in various dramatic roles including Black Monday, where he plays Maurice Monroe, a ruthless 1980s Wall Street stockbroker living under a fake identity.

In a recent interview with Variety, Don Cheadle talked about issues actors are faced with while playing characters whose actions come from a dark place.

Cheadle says playing a character who is in pain often affects him when he’s off-screen. He says, “It has to come from someplace where you feel the heart beating. I’ll speak for myself: I relish it all. I tend to under-value the effect it has on me, but as I’ve gotten older I realize it’s real and your body and your nervous system don’t always know that you’re acting. You come home and you’re like, ‘Why are my shoulders up to my ears?’”

Cheadle points out how to important it is for an actor to walk away from a dark character. He says, “You put these clothes on and you start to give signals to your body that you’re this person again, and you start getting into these different tempo rhythms and different things start getting accessed. So there is and there can be a residual thing when you get into dark characters and when you’re playing a lot of heavy, emotional stuff — and we can all talk about actors and creative people not being able to pull out of the places they put themselves in. You have to be careful and you have to take care of yourself, especially now, in this environment. Self-care is real and listening to yourself and taking care of that is really real.”

Details about the upcoming movie have not been released. However, we reported John Boyega and Jamie Foxx are set to team up in a new sci-fi film, which is set to film in Atlanta this fall. According to reports, John Boyega’s next movie will film in Georgia starting this September 2020. The upcoming sci-fi feature film will star Jamie Foxx, Teyonah Parris, and John Boyega. The movie will be directed by Creed 2 writer Juel Taylor. Taylor, who wrote the screenplay with Tony Rettenmaier, centers around a series of events that throws an unlikely trio onto the trail of an evil government conspiracy.

In addition, there are reports Jamie Foxx will join the cast of Spider-Man 3, which is also set to film this Fall in Atlanta, Georgia.

About SURROUNDED:

According to reports, Letitia Wright and Michael K. Williams star in the upcoming feature film Surrounded. The movie’s plot takes place five years after the Civil War, where former Buffalo Soldier Moses “Mo” Washington travels west to lay take over on a gold mine bequeathed by her late slaveowner father. It is a scary, dangerous world for an unaccompanied Black woman and so Mo travels into the deep frontier disguised as a man. After her stagecoach is ambushed, she is tasked with holding a dangerous outlaw captive and must survive the day when the bandit’s gang tries to free him.

“I couldn’t be more excited that Surrounded is the first film under my partnership with Aaron L. Gilbert’s Bron and the Blackhand Media banner,” said Mandler. “I’ve always loved the Western genre and the opportunity to tell this story from the eyes of a Black female during the Wild West is an honor.”
