Looking to Study Film? Wesleyan University Film Studies Program

There are a multitude of amazing film schools out there. Including the University of Southern California, and University of California Los Angeles rank the lists as the best film schools in the world.

But, it is important for aspiring filmmakers to not ignore institutions such as the Wesleyan University. The Hollywood Reporter ranks Weseleyan University as the 9th best Film School in the world.

OK, so everyone knows about the Hollywood infiltration of places like USC and UCLA. But they might be surprised to learn that Wesleyan’s Film Studies program is giving those two a run for their money, with a tight-knit group of alumni that includes Michael Bay, Akiva Goldsman, Joss Whedon, Larry Mark and Rick Nicita.

They and others were drawn to the Middletown, Conn.-based university not just because of the cozy feeling or its tradition in the liberal arts but largely because of the reputation of film department founder Jeanine Basinger, who makes each of her 80 film majors learn to write, direct and edit a movie by hand (yes, they learn digital, too) as well as study other subjects to enrich their films.

Of course, if they want to know about movies, they can turn to Wesleyan’s archive, which includes the papers of Frank Capra, Martin Scorsese, Federico Fellini and Clint Eastwood. “If you’re studying On the Waterfront, you can look at Elia Kazan’s notebook,” Basinger says. “It’s an amazing experience.” (THR)

Wesleyan University has been a firm leader in preparing students who wish to study Film. Since the 1960s, the university has provided schoals in both the humanities and social science to realize the importance and recognize cinema as a popular art form developed in the 20th century. Illustrating the profound effect film has had on modern culture.

A major asset to Film Studies at Wesleyan is the Wesleyan Cinema Archives, where a wide range of primary historical documents are collected reflecting a variety of fields within the liberal arts. Students have full access to these materials, which are also used by scholars from around the world, by biographers, and by media experts. In addition to materials on film, the Cinema Archives also cross-references materials in American Studies, Gender Studies, Literature, and Music.

Tips for An Amazing Acting Audition

Read our Acting audition tips for aspiring and working actors.

The hardest part about becoming an actor is the fact that each Casting Director is different and have different approaches to how an audition should work. For example, at the moment, the Casting Society of America does not have a set of rules each casting director should follow. It is important to note that before the pandemic, many auditions took place in person. That said, new safety protocols have made nearly all auditions virtual. Actors must audition through video submissions with meetings ZOOM and other video conferencing software.

That said, an actor’s prerogative should always be to do their job and perform a scene an actor should be remembered for their efforts and do their job.

Here are audition tips every actor should know

  • Focus on the audition
    • Auditions are about creating connections in the entertainment industry. The chances of landing a role are always small, and many factors go into who producers and casting directors decide to hire on a project. Most working actors audition for at least 20 projects for every role they land.
    • At each audition, it is crucial to show the casting director you are prepared and talented, even if the role is not right for you. If you are a reliable actor, then you will be remembered for future projects and productions.
  • Memorize your lines
    • The most professional actors know all of their lines. The best actors know all of their lines and everyone else in the scene. The actors who consistently get acting jobs are those who know their lines. No one is going to hire an actor if they cannot memorize their lines in the audition.
    • The performance should be as perfect as possible. If you need help memorizing lines, check out our guide here. 
  • Do your research
    • The most important thing for an actor is to prepare for an audition. Outside of memorizing lines, an actor needs to learn what kind of roles does the casting director cast.
      • For example, watch TV show episodes which were cast by the casting director. Focus on the pacing, intensity, and style of the characters.
      • Research the directors, writer, and producer, so you are familiar with their previous work as possible.
  • Keep your sides in your hands.
    • While you may know all of your lines, it is vital to hold your sides. Casting directors may ask you to reference your sides or make changes to your audition. Also, sides can be used as a prop and offer a reminder to anyone watching your video audition.
  • Be Nice.
    • It is important to be charming, personable and invested n your work. The director may be working with you for an extended time, and you do not want to be someone that the production can not see themselves being around.
    • It also does not hurt to smile.
  • Don’t wear a costume and bring props.
    • Actors should dress in the spirit of the character or production but not in costume. Nothing shouts unprofessional more than an actor dressed up as a pirate for an audition.
    • Actors need to make your acting show more than any prop or costume. Also, you don’t want to interfere with the director’s vision.
  • Make a statement
    • It is better to make a firm acting decision about your character. By doing so, you will become more memorable even if this does not lead to actually booking that particular acting job.

“Greater” Story of Brandon Burlsworth Casting Call for Principle and Featured Extra Roles

Casting Directors are now casting for the upcoming SAG feature film “Greater” filming in Arkansas.

Morgan Casting describes “Greater” as the unlikely career of Brandon Burlsworth is perhaps the greatest walk-on story in the history of college football. Known for his distinctive thick black glasses and resemblance to the 1990s incarnation of Drew Carey, the small-town Burlsworth had always dreamed of playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks, but was considered too small to play Division I ball. Undeterred, Brandon ended up taking a big risk by walking on to the team in 1994. Written off by fellow teammates and coaches alike, Brandon displayed dogged determination in the face of staggering odds. By 1999, Burlsworth was not only a star player in the toughest conference in college football, but he was also an All-American and taken as an early draft pick in the NFL by the Indianapolis Colts.But as amazing as Brandon’s athletic achievements were, he was more known in the state for his remarkable character. Extremely religious, Brandon never cursed or drank. He was genuinely humble and low-key. He went home to see his single mother every single weekend. He also worked harder than anybody, on and off the field, becoming the first Razorback in history to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree while playing football. The overly-fat kid who was once considered an embarrassment by teammates and an annoyance by coaches ended up becoming the most respected player in the history of the program, changing the lives of all he touched.

This made what happened next all the more difficult to bear… eleven days after being drafted into the NFL and before he was able to sign the contract that would change the financial status of his struggling family forever, Brandon tragically died in a car accident, stunning the state and crushing all who knew him. How could something like that happen to this guy? Brandon was “too good to be true”. He was known as being the best person anybody could ever meet. He did everything right, and yet here he was, snatched away before he or his family could enjoy the fruits of his efforts. Signs reading, “Lord, help us understand” sprang up all over the state as an age-old question slammed down upon all with terrible force: “Why do bad things happen to good people?”

Brandon’s story is more than mere football. It is the ultimate expression of the question “Why?” Told through the eyes of those who are struggling to deal with the tragedy of Brandon’s passing, Greater will provide hope and inspiration as it strives to wrestle with this challenge and find reason to trust despite it. It is Rudy meets “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Morgan Casting is teaming up with local casting coordinator Mark Landon Smith and Local Logistics coordinator Kim Pease to hold some amazing days of casting in Arkansas, plus surrounding states!

We need TONS of extras and true Razorback Fans + some great actors and so many locals with one-liners for some fun roles!!! The list below is long, but please do have a read! At the end we have a general call for “what we need.”

1. Brandon Burlsworth: 18 – 22 years– Very large frame, resembles a young Drew Carey) The gentle giant, and the greatest walk-on story in the history of college football. He is devout in his faith, Brandon “walks the walk” in a way that astonishes all who meet him. He is a rock – completely without guile, an unfailing force of simple, humble decency that changes the lives of all he meets. He doesn’t have an “arc” in the traditional sense, rather, he serves as a fulcrum around which every other character arcs in the story. [LEAD]

2. Younger Brandon Burlsworth: Looks to be 12-13 years of age. He enjoys chips and cheesecake, watching TV on the couch and dreams of one day being a Razorback. Looking for a great kid actor. Must be able to convey emotion well.

6. Vicki Burlsworth: Marty’s wife. 30s to 40s. Nice, attractive girl next door. pleasant younger version of Barbara. Caucasian.

Football Players 

9. Grant Garrett: Male, Caucasian, late teens to early twenties. Garrett is a large, goateed SEC offensive lineman, as well as Brandon’s conscripted roommate in the athletic dorm. Witty, intelligent, and interested in improving himself, Garrett initially rides his odd new roommate as much as anybody, but he quickly comes to respect Brandon and defend him in the presence of others, ending up as Brandon’s closest friend on the team. [PRINCIPAL] Please tell us about any real football experience.

10. Nathan Cole: Male, Caucasian, late teens to early twenties. Cole is an intimidating defensive lineman, one of the most talented athletes on the team. He is also an absolute wild man – a whirlwind of energy who has perfectly assimilated late 20th Century African-American urban culture and adopted much of its language and mannerisms. Cole is the most ardent tormentor of Brandon, who is his suite mate, but like the others he is eventually won over and becomes one of Brandon’s good friends. [PRINCIPAL] Please tell us about any real football experience.

11. Anthony Lucas: Male, African-American, late teens to early twenties. Anthony Lucas is one of the greatest wide receivers ever to play in the SEC – a personification of excellence. He is also one of Brandon’s suite mates, and is the kind of guy that can make people smile just by walking into the room. [PRINCIPAL] Please tell us about any real football experience.

12. Clint Stoernor: Male, Caucasian, late teens to early twenties. A year younger than Brandon, Stoerner is Arkansas’ stud quarterback – the best to play at the school in two decades. Initially cocky and arrogant, he learns humility by the end and demonstrates amazing strength of character following one of the most infamous game-losing plays in the history of college football. [PRINCIPAL] Please tell us about any real football experience.

13. Russell Brown: Male, Caucasian, late teens to early twenties. Tough SEC offensive lineman. Buzz cut, receding hairline, cauliflower ear… Garrett is so rough around the edges that it’s hard to tell if he even has edges. [PRINCIPAL]] Please tell us about any real football experience.

We need a church congregation, funeral attendees, police officer, kids and parents out on Halloween, bar and diner-by-the-road partrons, bartenders, servers, TV reporters, real construction workers who can drive and handle the equipment, football players to look like NFL Colts, football players IN GENERAL and did we say true RAZORBACK FANS!!

The Glades follows Passmore as he stars as Jim Longworth, an attractive yet brilliant Chicago homicide detective with a reputation for behing hardheaded. When his captain wrongfully mistakes him with sleeping with his wife, the captain shoots him forcing him to relocate and move to the middle of nowhere town, Palm Glade, outside of the Florida Everglades, where everything is nearly perfect. Until Longworth finds out that murders keep happening in the mysterious town. Each case pulls Longworth off the golf course and reluctantly into his element as one of the sharpest homicide detectives to wear a badge (A&E).

Want tCasting directors for AMC’s hit television series “Breaking Bad” is currently seeking females and males ages 18 and older for an upcoming scene in the series final episodes.

AMC’s critically acclaimed “Breaking Bad” is one of the hottest shows on television. “Breaking Bad” is an American TV drama series created and produced by the amazing Vince Gilligan. Vince Gilligan is known for his work on “The X-Files” and “The Lone Gunmen”. But, “Breaking Bad” centers on a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is previously diagnosed with lung cancer and in order to pay for the cancer treatment, he turns to a life of crime selling methamphetamine along with a former student, Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul, with the hope of securing a structured financial future for his family before he dies (Project Casting).

Filmmaking Terminology: 28 On-Set Phrases You Need to Know

Here are 28 on-set phrases and words you should know before going to set!

There is a particular type of vocabulary that is only heard in the film industry. May it be “lingo” or slang, you do not want to be caught dead not knowing these terms on-set. It could be the one word that transitions you from a background acting role to a recurring role on your favorite television series.

So to eliminate any confusion here, our vocabulary list of on-set lingo.

Holding – If you are a background actor, this is where you will spend most of the day waiting.  This will be where you check-in, get your voucher, see wardrobe, see hair & make-up, and most likely eat lunch/dinner, etc.

Voucher – This is probably one of the most important documents. Vouchers are how you will get paid.  It’s like a receipt and time-card all in one.  You must hold on to this to get paid unless you are given wardrobe – then wardrobe will hold on to your voucher until you give your borrowed garbs back.

Crafty – Crafty is also known as craft services.  Crafty is where you can find snacks. Common items in crafty include pretzels, cheese balls, fruit, granola bars, and PB&J sandwiches. If you are a background actor, do not have high expectations, and many times you will have a separate crafty service.

Rolling – This means the camera is recording, and everyone should be ready to go. The only people that should be allowed to talk are the main actors themselves, and the director.

Sound Speed – This means they are recording audio.  EVERYTHING you say (even a whisper) will be caught on tape once ‘sound speeds.’

Background! – “Background!” is the extras version of “action!” For extras, Background is your cue to start moving. If it is your first time as a background actor, you may get lost like a deer in headlights. Just remember your acting cues.

Action! – Action is the cue for the actors to start performing

Banana – you sometimes will be asked to ‘do a banana’ across the floor.  Instead of walking a straight line, you will walk a line in the shape of a banana.

Cut – This is the cue for everyone to stop;  This includes actors, cameras, sound, and you.

Check the Gate – Check the gate means to check the shutter for film residue. Hundreds of feet of the film may have passed through the shutter during the filming of a scene. Over time, dust can get caught in the shutter. Or, while changing the lens, hair may get caught in the shutter. As a result, the camera operator needs to make sure this did not happen. If it has, the scene may need to be reshot.

Martini – This is the last shot of the night.  It’s derived because, after this shot, everyone is ready to get a martini (or drink of choice).

Pantomime – This is what you will typically do on set.  It is all of the action of acting, but without the sound.

Mark -A mark is where a person needs to stand or arrive at a particular time.  When an actor (or extra) stands in one spot, walks across the room, and then stops in another place – he walked from one mark to another mark.  They are the pieces of tape on the floor.

First Team – This team consists of the stars/actors of the film.

Second Team – This team consists of Stand-in for the actors.

Stand-in – An individual who stand-in for the actor while the director of photography organizes the camera angles. It is a good position, and it is not uncommon for directors to upgrade stand-ins to principal roles.

AD – Assistant Director.  The AD will call out actions for the Director, they will also instruct the cameramen and extras.

Gaffer – This is the head electrician.

Grip – They are the muscle on the set.  Grips will set up and break down various items, including but not limited to tracks, cameras, lights.

Best boy – This is the gaffers, right-hand man.  It’s a fancy name for the assistant gaffer.

Dolly – The Dolly allows for the camera to move around the scene.

Jib – This is the ‘long arm of the camera.’  Also referred to as ‘the crane.’

Wardrobe – This consists of the clothes you wear.

Back story – ever get bored on set?  Create your back story.  The back story is the history of your character and why you are doing what you are doing.  It’s your character’s history.

Points! – This is called when large items are being transported through where you may be standing.  It’s an easy way of saying, “Watch out, or you may lose your eye!”

Director – They are in charge of the set. He is responsible for getting the actors to where they need to be, making sure the camera has everyone adequately framed, and the overall outcome of the project.

PA – Production Assistant.  There are several positions of PAs.  The one background actors will most be in contact with is the ‘extras wrangler.’

Apple Box – These are small boxes used to make things higher.  Typically used as a seat ‘cushion’ so when one sits, they are raised a few inches, making them appear taller.

Casting Director – The casting director is the person in charge of casting.  Background actors will most likely only come in contact with the extras casting director.  His only duty is to hire enough people for the scene.  The ECD and the PA will be your main points of contact if an issue arises on set or in holding.

Casting Assistant – The casting assistant is the assistant to the Casting Director.  Sometimes they will be there instead of or with the actual Casting Director.

Set – Set is the filming location.

Blacklist – the blacklist is a list of people that will not be able to work for individual companies for whatever reasons.  Beware – sometimes, these lists are shared between companies.

‘It’s a Wrap’ – This means everyone is done filming for that day.  Get ready to either get checked out and go home or go back to the wardrobe and get your voucher, so then you can go to the back of the checkout line to go home.

Facetime – The amount of time your face shows up on the screen.  You never really know how much facetime you will get until the editing is complete.

“Frat Brothers” is Seeking Background Actors in Wilmington North Carolina

Vanessa Ncasting is currently seeking actors for the upcoming feature film “Frat Brothers” in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“Frat Brothers” is a come of age movie centered on two brothers who are encouraged to join the same fraternity as their father. However, one chooses a different path.

“These brothers come together,” said the film’s 23-year-old star Romeo, formerly known as Lil Romeo, who is also the son of rapper Master P. “You see the ups and downs, the happy times and the sad times. It’s just like real life.”

The feature film will be shot entirely in Wilmington, using UNCW’s campus, Cape Fear Community College and several Downtown Wilmington streets.

Romeo says the location is a refreshing change from Hollywood (AmericaNowNews).

ZombieLand – Casting Directors are Currently Seeking a ‘Little Rock’ Photo Double

Screenrant recently reported that the hilarious comedic adventure, Zombieland will be coming to Amazon.

Back in 2005, CBS passed on (then, unknown) screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s proposed horror-comedy TV series pilot Zombieland. The rest, as they say, is history, once Reese and Wernick retrofitted their script into a feature-length format, teaming with director Ruben Fleischer to produce the 2009 (semi-)cult hit movie of the same name.

In the feature film, Little Rock, a worldly girl hardened by adversity, was portrayed by Abigail Breslin. But, in the Amazon Studios Little Rock will be played by Izabela Vidovic. Recently, Bill Marinella Casting just posted a notice on their facebook that they are looking someone to play Little Rock’s photo double. Beijing Film Academy The Most Competitive School in The World?

Well one of the best film schools in the world, argued by many scholars is the Beijing Film Academy. The Beijing Film academy is  currently ranked #3 by the Hollywood Reporter.

“If one film school anywhere in the world has shaped a whole nation, it’s the Beijing Film Academy, China’s most elite school for film direction, production and writing. Each year, it accepts about 500 applicants — primarily from China — out of 100,000. The school is  a source of new talent for film and TV production and closely linked with the nearby Beijing Film Studio. It’s also the place where such directors as Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige — the ones who created arguably the most distinct new wave of filmmaking since America in the early 1970s — cut their teeth. (At 27, Zhang had to get special permission to attend after the Cultural Revolution because he had passed the cut-off age.)”

Programs

The Beijing Film Academy provides an Undergraduate Program for 2013 International Applicants.

THey boast that a student of The Beijing Film Academy will be able to join a family of 48 PHDs 422 post-graduates, 1,894 undergraduates and 84 overseas students. Allowing students the opportunity to network with some of tomorrow’s media leaders. All courses within the program are English-language friendly, and you will enjoy access to our advanced production facilities.

In the first two years, students in shooting practices will be allocated into different positions in turn such as screenwriter, director, cinematographer, gaffer, editor and special effect supervisor. In the 3rd an 4th year, they will be separated into specific directions: Directing, Cinematography and Digital Imaging according to their interests and performances in previous two years (Beijing Film Academy).

Admissions

The admission rate at Beijing Film Academy is one of the lowest in the world. Over 100,00 students apply each year to participate in entrance exams with only 500 accepted each year. The majority of the admissions process takes place in March while the entrance examinations include subject tests such as the National Humanities Examination. Furthermore, most of the acting majors have extreme competition.

International students may apply through the International Training Center.

Beijing Film Academy Program Details

TUITION Program fees range from $1,240 to $1,550 for local students; international students pay $6,665 to $7,905 per year for film programs. Partial and full scholarships are available based on need and merit and are awarded on an individual basis.

DEGREES B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. programs in everything from performance and direction to cinematography and animation. All degree programs are conducted in Chinese, though international students may take some courses in English or study Chinese at the Film Academy.

University of Southern California school of Cinematic Arts was recently ranked by The Hollywood Reporter as the second best film school in the United States.

Choosing to go to college or a university is probably one of the most influential decisions anyone has to make in their lifetime. “As an international and multi-cultural program, the John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts has incorporated into its curriculum a theoretical and critical approach to the development and research of digital art forms as well as a historical understanding of how traditional media, drawing, painting, sculpture, video and installation art have transposed or been incorporated into animation or art in motion.”

Film and TV Production

Cinema is the pre-eminent art form of our time; it has an enormous impact on our world, with the power to change consciousness and shape world culture, and the Division of Film & Television Production plunges students into the entire creative process. Here, students learn all aspects of the art of storytelling and develop the ability to take audiences on emotional journeys using a wide array of cinematic skills. During their time here, our outstanding women and men learn to access this unique power by working in many forms, from traditional large-screen films to those designed for the smallest cell phone screen, to television in multiple formats.

 

The Peter Stark Producing Program

The Peter Stark Producing Program believes in the primacy of ideas and imagination. A producer is a creative originator, an entrepreneurial self-starter, whose initiating talent is recognizing ideas that have merit creatively and/or commercially.

The mission of the Peter Stark Program is to expose students to the full spectrum of the entertainment business, thereby enabling them to refine and define their individual career goals. Our curriculum is designed to give our students the practical skills and knowledge by which they can accomplish their creative goals with integrity to their own values.

USC’s School of Cinematic Arts Writing for Screen & Television Division is the most respected program of its kind in the country. Out of thousands of applicants each year, only 26 undergraduate students and 32 graduate students are admitted for their respective degrees. Internship will be supporting the Original Art Department within Creative with taking photographs, then using a Mac to process the photos with Iphoto, manipulate the photos in Photoshop.
