10 Movies that Weren’t Supposed to Do Well But Were Box Office Hits

0

Sometimes it is difficult to tell what movie is going to do well just by looking at the script, or hearing the idea for the first time.

But, here are 10 movies that were not supposed to do well in the box office but ended up being box office success stories.

10.The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense was written by the same writer of “Stuart Little” and although the script was purchased by Disney, may did not believe the movie was going to well and sold it to another production company. However, when the movie was released it was an instant success at the US box office and was the top movie for five weeks straight and nominated for six Academy Awards.

9. Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings is now a hit trilogy bringing in millions of dollars and producing the Hobbit trilogy sequel. But, when Peter Jacksonw anted to start the project in 1995, several other productions got in the way. The plan was to have two films with Miramax, but due to budget constraints producers at Miramax wanted to only make one movie.

Peter Jackson was so upset at the idea of having only one ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie that he left Miramax and signed a deal with New Line Cinema to produce the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

8. The King’s Speech

The King’s Speech movie was a huge success. It won Colin Firth an Oscar. But, when the movie was first released it was not generally believed that it was going to do well and it was given a limited release and earned only $9 million dollars. but, it was not until after people saw the movie did the word of mouth help skyrocket the movie to fame. The King’s Speech ended up spending ten weeks reigning in the top ten after its release.

7. Slumdog Millionaire

Few people thought this movie was going to be a success when it was released. Many producers consider a film about ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ something that people would want to watch. But, it did amazingly well. The budget of 15 million dollars put the movie to a Box Office Total of $378 million dollars.

6. Juno

When filmmaker Jason Reitman started the movie Juno, he did not have a single theatrical relase in his resume. Not only that but the movie had an extremely low budget and the script was not even fully developed. However, the amazing performances of Ellen page and Michael Cera went above and beyond expectations and allowed for the movie to earn over $200,000,000

 5.Paranormal Activity

This ‘found footage’ movie cost next to nothing for the movie to make. But, people found this movie extremely haunting. The word of mouth stories of people fainting in the theaters helped sell MORE tickets and put Paranormal activity with a box office earnings of $190 million.

4. The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project was one of the first few movies that started the “found footage” era of cinema. Their viral marketing campaign included making people wonder if it was real or if it was fake. Were these group of teenagers actually killed by the hands of a witch?
All of the scenes were pretty much improvied and although the filmmakers wanted it to become a television movie, they ended up making $248 million dollars in the box office.

3. Napoleon Dynamite

Filmmakers Jared and Jerusha Hess only paid their lead actor a $1,000 dollars for his work on the movie. It was filmed in 22 days and debuted at Sundance. The movie was such a hit that Fox won the rights, and the movie made over $46 million dolllars.

2. Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine was a comedy that premiered at the 2006 Sundance festival and was later picked up by Fox Searchlight, but many producers were scared to make the movie.
But, like most movies, the word of mouth and high critical reception helped make an $8,000,000 investment turn into $100 million.

1. The Lion King

The Lion King may just be one of the biggest and greatest animated films of all time. It was the highest grossing movie the year it was released but, several animators at Disney thought it was not going to do well, and they doubted the success of the project. Some of the animators even left Lion King to work on Pocahontas instead. Unfortunately for them, Lion King did better than their expectations.

What State is the Movie-Making Capital of the World? You May Just be Shocked

Louisiana is the top location for Hollywood’s major movies last year according to a report by Film L.A.

When it came to major movies, California is no longer the entertainment industry mecca, according to a new study released Thursday.

Eighteen out of 108 films last year that were produced by the major studios and the five biggest independents were shot in Louisiana, according to the 2013 Feature Film Production study from FilmL.A., the region’s non-profit permitting agency.

film-chart-by-market

Paramount’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,”, Focus Features’ “Dallas Buyers Club” and Warner Bros.’ “Grudge Match” were among the movies shot in Louisiana.

California and Canada were next with 15, followed by the United Kingdom with 12 and Georgia with nine. Surprisingly, New York had only four major films. Ca

The surveyed films represent $7.6 billion in direct spending and tens of thousands of jobs in an array of professions, the report found.

The United States is still marked as the number one location in the nation for film production, with 70 feature films shot here. Now California are sharing their wealth with other states since many other states share lucrative tax credits and film incentives.

movies.jobs_

The numbers demonstrate what most people in California’s film and TV industry worried about, the loss of job opportunities and projects. The number of productions filming in California have been decreasing since 1887, when Canada offered significant tax credits for TV producers and filmmakers.

According to FilmL.A. president Paul Audley, there may just be a solution to California’s runaway production problem,

“The film and entertainment industries are absolutely essential to California’s middle class, and this underscores the importance of our work to level the playing field against the other states and countries who are luring our jobs away,” said Garcetti. “These jobs not only support California families, they generate revenues that pay for schools, infrastructure, and other state services.”

But, 2014 continues to look like a great year for Louisiana. “Jurassic World”, “Get Hard” starring Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell, and “Terminator Genesis” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger are all filming in Louisiana.

What do you think? Leave us a comment below and discuss!

The Final Moments of Sarah Jones on Set of ‘Midnight Rider’

0

“It didn’t feel right. I didn’t feel safe there.”

The recent passing of Sarah Jones, the 27 year old camera assistant has spread grief and anger throughout Hollywood, New York, Atlanta, and sets all across the globe. Thousands have centered around #SlatesForSarah, a movement to make sure Sarah’s death does not go unnoticed.

Recently, the Hollywood Reporter, discussed in detail what happened in those final moments before the accident that hurt several people and left Jones’ face and body mangled on the train tracks.

The movie was Midnight Rider. An indie biopic centering on Gregg Allman the 1970s rocker. Joyce Gilliard, was a 42 year old hairstylist working on Midnight Rider. In an interview with THR, she commented that, as soon as she got to the location, something did not feel right. “It didn’t feel right. I didn’t feel safe there.”

As the day continued, the director Randall Miller decided to move on and shoot the scene on the train trestle itself, which can be seen below. It is reported that the trestle’s wood was filled with pebbles and in some places, holes. The weather conditions were not perfect. Harsh winds were making it difficult for anyone to stay steady on the tracks, according to Gillard.

In a brief meeting before filming, a voice shouted that the crew had 60 seconds, in case a train was headed their way. “Everybody on the crew was tripping over that,” says Gilliard. “A minute? Are you serious?” Members of the crew were so nervous for their lives, that they gathered in an informal prayer circle. “Lord, please protect us on these tracks,” murmured Gilliard. “Surround us with your angels and help us, Lord.”

Now, here are the final moments. Jones was setting up the shot for the scene. Loading filming, monitoring the cameras and transporting gear. The scene required a twin-size metal frame bed and mattress to lay on the train tracks. Then, in the distance a train was approaching at 60 mph. The train was as big as the trestle, leaving little to no space to hide. Sarah Jones was trying to save several bags, when she shouted out asking what she should do with the expensive camera equipment.  “Drop it!” Gilliard and others yelled. “Just drop it!”. Other crew members were trying to remove the metal bed frame and mattress from the tracks in fear that it would derail the train. But, it was too late. In an attempt to avoid being struck by the train, Joyce Gillard and Sarah Jones tried to find shelter on the gangplank.

Gilliard’s arm would snap like a twig against the train as it flew past and Jones’ lifeless body and face would be found mangled on the train tracks.

Since the tragic incident investigations have widened to include the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Georgia law enforcement authorities are treating the investigation into Jones’ death as a negligent homicide.

Ray Brown, president of the Motion Picture Studio Mechanics union local 479 in Atlanta suggested the incident could have been avoided.

“When I have done train work or around trains for smaller productions up to major blockbusters, there are always several railroad personnel there with their hard hats, glasses and radios, and I can’t imagine a more structured safety protocol even beyond airlines than the rail system.”

CSX, the Florida-based railway company that owns the tracks, told the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office that it never granted Midnight Rider’s producers permission to film on the tracks in the first place.

On March 2nd in Jones’ hometown, nearly 900 people gathered to say goodbye at the Ashaland United Methodist Church. Her father play a song called “Andy’s Song,” a tune about his own father he had composed and played for Sarah only a few weeks prior, when he found himself stranded in Atlanta by the snowstorm. It was the last time he saw her in person.
