Voice Tips Every Aspiring Actor Needs To Know

As an actor your job is to communicate to the camera that your voice, and body movements.

If no one can understand what you’re saying, no amount of acting ability will help you land a role. That is why voice lessons are extremely important. For example, learning how to breathe and projecting your voice are key tools you should know when you walk on set. By learning these techniques, you can speak clearly after working several hours a day without having to straining your voice.

Training your voice can also make you a versatile actor. For instance, singing lessons can teach you how to control your voice and allow you to audition for a wide spectrum of roles.

It is important to note that if you have an accent of any kind, you should visit a dialect coach who can help you eliminate that accent. Or, visit a dialect coach to hep you learn different types of accents. The more dialects you can speak, the greater your chances that you’ll be able to land a role that specifically requires certain types of accents.

However, using your original dialect may actually help your career. For instance, Matthew McConaughey is known for his southern voice which has helped him land major roles including the award winning role in The Dallas Buyers Club. But, at the end of the day, the more voices you can master the better.
