Rami Malek used his pizza delivery job to get noticed as a struggling aspiring actor.
On Sunday, Rami Malek accepted his Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding male actor in a leading role for the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Malek discussed his life briefly as a struggling aspiring actor. “I have anecdotes about what it is to be an actor and delivering pizzas and stuff like that, but I will spare you,” he said.
For those who are curious, however, Malek later explained backstage.
As he told People, “I used to tape my headshot and résumé to pizza boxes, and if anyone seemed even remotely involved in the industry, I was taping them up and sending them out for years.”
Malek continued, “I was dying to get a role as an actor. This is more extraordinary than I could ever have expected in my life . . . I never thought I would be in a position to have one of my boxes on-camera, on television, have my face next to all of those extraordinary actors.”
People goes on to say that Malek went into detail about his pizza-delivery business in the press room, recalling the years he handed out pizza boxes with this headshot taped to them before someone finally called. “. . . and on that day, I went into her office and got the job later that night,” Malek said. “I woke up, and I was about to be a part of SAG the very next day.”
In his speech Sunday night, Malek also thanked Queen, as well as Freddie Mercury. “I get some power from him that is about stepping up and living your best life,” Malek said onstage. “Being exactly who you want to be and accomplishing everything you so desire. And I feel that, and he allows us all to feel that, so this is, again, for him. Thank you very much.”
