The Mandalorian is a Disney+ series created by Jon Favreau for Disney+. It is the first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise and takes place five years following the Jedi Return. Pedro Pascal is the leading character, a bounty hunter who is hired to get “The Child.”
Star Wars creator George Lucas started working on the live-action series in 2009. However, the production was considered too expensive to make. Lucas then sold Lucasfilm to Disney in October 2012. Disney started to work on the new series for Disney+.
Jon Favreau signed on in March 2018 to work as the writer and showrunner on the production. Favreau works alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. The series was announced in October 2018, with filming starting at Manhattan Beach Studios in California. VFX company Industrial Light and Magic developed the technology for the series, including StageCraft virtual sets and a 360-degree video wall to create the backgrounds. This technology has expanded to other film and TV productions.
The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ on November 12, 2019, with the service’s launch. The eight-episode first season was well-received by critics. For example, the show was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards and won seven Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. A second season premiered on October 30, 2020, and a third season is currently in pre-production. Three spin-off series were announced in December 2020 and will expand on the series timeline, including The Book of Boba Fest, Rangers of the New Republic, and Ahsoka.
