The “Independence Day” sequel has had two working scripts. One with Will Smith and the other without him.
The 1996 feature film was a box office hit, making over $817 million dollars worldwide and winning the Oscar for best Visual Effects. But, according to Deadline.com, it looks like Will Smith will not be featured in the upcoming feature film.
An anonymous source told Deadline that Smith has informed Fox that he is not on board for the sequel to the popular sci-fi feature film. The early reports show that Smith has not yet officially told the director Roland Emmerich, who previously told reporters that Smith’s involvement was “looking good” despite it being reported that Will Smith is “too expensive” and “too marquee”.
The release of “Independence Day 2” also known as “ID Forever” will coincide with the 20th year anniversary to the 1996 feature film.
The movie was delayed from July 2015 to July 2016 to avoid competition that included “Jurassic World,” “The Fantastic Four”, “Terminator: Genesis” and “Ant Man”.
Despite, Will Smith backing out of the production, it is rumored that Michael B. Jordan may take up the lead role, and the original stars, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to reprise their roles.
