Tim Kaine Surprises Fans with “SNL” Appearance; John Mulaney Hosts

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Democratic Senator Tim Kaine made a surprise appearance on “SNL”
– Host John Mulaney unknowingly quizzes Kaine in a sketch titled “What’s That Name: Election Edition.”
– Sarah Sherman portrayed Canadian author Margaret Atwood within the same sketch.
– This marked Mulaney’s sixth time hosting NBC’s late-night comedy icon.

Exciting times on SNL! On the brink of the 2024 presidential election, Tim Kaine, the Democratic Senator from Virginia, unexpectedly joined the “Saturday Night Live” team in a recent episode. If you remember, Kaine was Hillary Clinton’s sidekick during the 2016 election. Can you believe he showed up on SNL? What a hoot!

A Surprise Quiz for Mulaney

The night was full of laughs, especially during the sketch “What’s That Name: Election Edition.” John Mulaney, a crowd favorite and the night’s host, got stumped during this game show sketch when he had to identify Kaine.

Kaine humorously pushed Mulaney by saying, “You voted for me to be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office in an election more recent than the release of ‘Zootopia.’ What’s my name?” Poor Mulaney, the challenge was certainly on!

Mulaney, acting as quiz show contestant Ben, seemed genuinely flustered by the surprise. He pointed out the similarities between Kaine and Tim Walz, the current Democratic VP candidate. We all had a good chuckle when Mulaney stammered out, “Not only does he look exactly like Tim Walz, his name was also Tim. Really, his name was Tim.”

Kaine’s Quick-Witted Response

Always the good sport, Kaine had a lovely response. He joked, “My name is still Tim. I exist. I’m a senator representing Virginia.” It was quite the memorable sketch, that’s for sure!

Special Guest: Margaret Atwood

In a delightful twist, “SNL” cast member Sarah Sherman appeared as a contestant named “Margaret.” By the end of the sketch, it was revealed she was portraying none other than Margaret Atwood. You know, the amazing writer behind “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

East Coast Meets Canadian Literature

Mulaney’s character seemed frustrated when asked to identify a victim of police brutality besides George Floyd. He criticized the show’s host, played by Michael Longfellow, by stating, “Why don’t you use your platform to go after the real problem? Do you realize if Donald Trump wins, we are going to be living in a real-life version of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Sherman’s Atwood Character Jumps In

Sherman, as Atwood, interjected, saying, “If you’d read that book, you’d see that we’re basically halfway there.” As Mulaney tried to brush off the comment, the host informed him he was speaking to the author of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

A Milestone for John Mulaney

For John Mulaney, this episode marked his sixth time hosting “SNL.” In 2022, this hilarious comedian was welcomed into the show’s elite “Five-Timers Club.” It’s an honor given to those who have hosted the show at least five times. Just imagine, Mulaney went from being an “SNL” writer from 2008 to 2013 to hosting one of our favorite Saturday night shows!

Mulaney’s Rise To Stardom

Mulaney has certainly made a name for himself over the years, earning his fame with memorable sketches like “Diner Lobster,” “Subway Churro,” “Airport Sushi,” and “Cha Cha Slide.” He’s also done several fantastic comedy specials for Netflix that have cemented his place in comedy stardom.

Don’t forget to tune into the next episode of “SNL” – you never know who might show up!
