Kristen Bell is officially joining the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

The actress has been cast as Amy Rose, the iconic pink hedgehog, in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is set for release in March 2027.

Bell’s casting follows a post-credit scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Amy made her long-awaited cinematic debut by rescuing Sonic — setting the stage for her expanded role in the upcoming sequel.

A Fan-Favorite Character

Amy Rose first appeared in the early 1990s Sonic the Hedgehog manga before making her video game debut in 1993’s Sonic the Hedgehog CD. Originally introduced as a character in need of rescue, Amy quickly evolved into a fan favorite known for wielding her signature giant hammer and relentlessly pursuing Sonic’s affection.

Over the years, she has become a staple of the franchise, appearing in numerous games and spin-offs.

Excitement from the Cast

Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz announced Bell’s addition to the cast on Instagram, writing:

“WE HAVE OUR AMY ROSE!!! And I could not be more excited!!! Please welcome the incredible Kristen Bell to the Sonic family!!!”

While Schwartz is confirmed to return as Sonic, fans are still waiting for official word on whether Keanu Reeves (Shadow), Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik), and Idris Elba (Knuckles) will reprise their roles.

What to Expect from ‘Sonic 4’

The upcoming sequel is rumored to draw inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, the game that introduced both Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. However, franchise director Jeff Fowler has emphasized that the films aim to balance nostalgia with originality.

“With the movies, what we always try to do is honor the characters and stories that made them so iconic, but also give it a movie coat of paint,” Fowler told Polygon. “We never want to repeat ourselves. It’s always got to take us into new territory.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 19, 2027.
