The Walking Dead can possibly run for another 15 years.
If you love The Walking Dead, then I have some great news for you. According to a new report by Forbes.com, The Walking Dead is on track to run for 20 or more seasons.
It was recently announced that The Walking Dead has been renewed for a seventh season. And while ratings have dropped in comparison to last season, it still remains one of the most watched television shows in recent history.
Following the recent cancellations of AMC’s Breaking Bad and Mad Men, The Walking Dead is the life support for the network.
But, that should not be a problem for the writers and producers of The Walking Dead.
In comparison to other book adapted TV shows such as Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead has a ton of source material to extrapolate ideas and storylines for the TV series.
The Walking Dead is only on issue 81 out of 147 and as Forbes pointed out, this is extremely important.
Why is this significant?
Because the total run of the comics is now up to 147 issues. That’s a full 66 issues past where we are now.
If the show travels at the same pace it’s been, with non-comic detours like Terminus and the hospital inserted along the way, The Walking Dead has the potential to run for probably 4-5 more seasons based on the existing source material right now.
That would mean we’d hit season 10-11 before finishing up everything in existence at the moment.
In addition, Robert Kirkman, the creator behind the original comic book series, is currently writing additional issues for The Walking Dead.
He has reportedly revealed that he has enough ideas to keep the comic book series going for another 300 issues.
Which means the series could run at least until season 20 before running out of source material.
But, it begs the question? Can The Walking Dead last 20 seasons?
TV shows that typically last 10 seasons or longer are typically crime-dramas where the plot never really changes. For example, every Law and Order and CSI TV show is basically the same with a new crime to solve before the episode is over with nothing ever really changing with the show’s main characters. Which makes it easier for audiences to pick up and watch a random episode, that is why these shows end up becoming syndicated across every network.
What makes The Walking Dead different than other TV shows is the fact that there is no real ending. The zombies are there to stay as there is no cure for the mysterious zombie disease. In addition, the cast is constantly changing.
The only thing that can kill The Walking Dead will be an expensive budget and low ratings. However, it may take several more years before audiences become sick of the zombie drama.
