Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said he could have hosted the Oscars and saved The Academy from their host crisis.
But, Dwayne Johnson says he was too busy filming “Jumanji 2” after being the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ top pick to host the Feb. 24 show.
“I was their first choice to host this year,” Johnson said on Twitter Wednesday. “My goal was to make it the most fun and entertaining Oscars ever. We all tried hard, but couldn’t make it work since I’m shooting ‘Jumanji.’ “
It was not meant to be. Johnson said both he and the Academy “were super bummed” that it couldn’t work out.
Johnson’s “Jumanji 2” co-star Kevin Hart did not have the same filming conflicts. The comedian accepted his dream of hosting the Oscars but stepped down in December following a controversy from his refusal to apologize for previous comments and tweets.
No one has stepped up to host the show. ABC confirmed on Wednesday the show would go on this year without a host, the first time since 1989.
Johnson added in his tweet, “Maybe one day down the road.”
