Self driving cars are going to boost the entertainment industry? So start filming.
Do you have a YouTube channel? How about a Vine profile? A Facebook page? If not, you better get one because the future is here and it looks pretty damn amazing.
When Elon Musk revealed a self-driving car, the world paused for a moment. Now, Google, Apple, and Uber are investing heavily into self-driving cars. In fact, Google plans to sell self-driving cars by 2020 to the general public.
But, what will self driving cars do for the film industry?
Well, if you’re no longer driving, you will have more time to spend watching YouTube videos, Netflix, short films, etc. According to a report by Ernst & Young on the media and and entertainment industries, the average American spends about an hour a day in their cars, a number that has increased significantly over the past 30 years. With self-driving cars, people can spend more time watching videos, and consequently more advertisements.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
“If the focus during that time were to shift from concentrating on the road to watching video,” the report stated, “that equates to more than US$20 billion in incremental revenue for the video industry.”
According to the report, the number of WiFi enabled cars will grow from 21 to 60 million. At the same time there will be an increase in self driving cars. Outside of Google, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volvo are already offer some type of semi-autonomous driving. In addition, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently hinted that Tesla’s Model 3, coming in late 2017, will offer something close to full self-driving.
The Ernst & Young report estimated that the number of connected cars in the U.S. will grow from 21 million in 2015 to 60 million in 2019. During the same period, automakers are expected to make strides in self-driving vehicles. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo and Tesla, among others, already offer semi-autonomous driving functions, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently hinted that Tesla’s Model 3, coming in late 2017, will offer something close to full autonomy, whether or not government guidelines are in place.
If you’re an aspiring filmmaker, actor, or talent, then the time is now to start producing and creating your own projects because in an industry that is expected to make billions upon billions in the next couple of years, you can put yourself in the driver seat of the entertainment industry.
