Robert DeNiro says he has never watched The Sopranos.
In an interview, Robert DeNiro reveals that he doesn’t watch very much television. The actor, who starred in several mob releated movies including The Godfather Part II (the movie which would land DeNiro an Academy Award for best supporting role), Casino, and Goodfellas, told Cigar Aficionado magazine in his September/October feature that he has never seen the HBO show, according to Page Six.
Robert DeNiro spoke to Cigar Aficionado‘s editor and publisher Marvin R. Shanken in the exclusive interview, which also addresses “his greatest roles, his business success and his contributions to the cinematic wielding of cigars,” according to Cigar‘s website. “I assume you watch TV,” Shanken said. “I’ve done quite a few interviews. I’ve never worked so hard preparing for you.”
“Not much, but it depends,” De Niro replied.
“Did you ever watch The Sopranos?” Shanken questioned. “No,” De Niro said.
“Interesting. So my next question…” Shanken replied. De Niro then said: “I heard about it. It was very good.”
The Sopranos was a major TV phenomenom. From 1999 until 2007, HBO’s Sorpranos provided audiences an inside look into the New Jersey-based Italian American mobster Tony Sorprano (James Gandolfini). The series portrays the difficulties he faces as he tries to balance the conflicting requirements of his home life and his criminal organization. These are often highlighted during his therapy sessions with psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco). The Sopranos features Tony’s family members, Mafia colleagues and rivals in prominent roles and storylines, most notably his wife Carmela (Edie Falco) and protégé Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli).
The series features six seasons and 86 episodes by the end of 2007 and the series has been regarded by some as the greatest TV series of all times. The Sorpranos won several always including 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards.
