Suicide Squad had six or seven different versions of the same movie.
Suicide Squad is the most popular movie in the box office for a second week in a row. However, many fans and critics were not impressed by the feature film. In fact, in a video that has gone viral by YouTuber Jenny Nicholson, fans are upset with the movie’s storyline and character development.
In addition, hundreds of fans have called for a refund and even on UK fan is threatening to sue Suicide Squad for false advertisement. So what went wrong? Did marketing falsely advertise what the movie was all about? Was the brutal movie reviews by the critics justified?
As if to add to the confusion, director David Ayer has been dropping rather interesting comments about the movie Suicide Squad. In an interview with Empire, Ayer openly discused the behind the scenes secrets of Suicide Squad and while his description of the movie is “really the journey of the soul” and an “anarchic punk rock art movie”, Ayer revealed that there were “six or seven different versions of the film.”
Ayer comments help explain The Hollywood Reporter’s story on the behind the scenes controversy of Suicide Squad. According to the report, Warner Bros. was focused on making sure they could deliver a better movie than Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and ordered several cuts of Suicide Squad to test it with audiences:
A key concern for Warners executives was that Suicide Squad didn’t deliver on the fun, edgy tone promised in the strong teaser trailer for the film. So while Ayer pursued his original vision, Warners set about working on a different cut, with an assist from Trailer Park, the company that had made the teaser.
Recently, Mr. Sunday Movies, compiled speculation from several sources from the director and cast themselves. It focuses on many things we have been hearing about, like several edits of the same moving resulting in the modern version with trippy character profiles that were added to the movie in order to explain to the audience who’s who. David Ayer explained that version to Empire:
“There’s a linear version we did where it opens up with June in the cave and tells the story in sequence with the arrests and Batman, and then we go to Belle Reve. Honestly, there may be six or seven different versions of the film. In that version, [test] audiences were left with a lot of questions and a little disoriented as to who to watch and why. So we came up with what we call the ‘dossier’ version which has Amanda presenting the backstories and origins of the various members.”
