Even though J.J. Abrams is not directing Star Wars: Episode VIII, the actor turned filmmaker, knows a lot about the future of the Disney franchise.
When Abrams was asked about the popular theory that the new Star Wars Jedi Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, could be Kenobi or a Skywalker, Abrams said, “I know quite a bit.”
During a press conference on Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour, Abrams answered questions about the Star Wars franchise while also promoting his new Showtime series Roadies. However, Abrams didn’t really spill the beans on the future of the Star Wars movies. However, he did explain that he does know what will happen to Rey.
“Obviously, it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s story to continue now and the last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about.
“Obviously, it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s story to continue now and the last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy,” Abrams said of his successor Rian Johnson, who will direct “Episode VIII.”
When asked if it is hard to hold onto such a big secret, Abrams said, “Not for me!”
Even though he’s not directing Episode VII Abrams said he is excited to see the next movie in the franchise. But, the director also said he regretted not directing the next movie during a recent interview with his friend Greg Grunberg. “You put a microphone in front of him and you never know what you’re going to get. I love my friend Greg, he’s been my best friend since kindergarten and I think that my enthusiasm for ‘VIII’ is enormous. I think he also might have invented a couple of the quotes that he gave.”
“I am very much excited for and very jealous of anyone, especially Rian, who gets to work so close to this extraordinary cast and crew — truly an amazing group.
Abrams added: “I am very much excited for and very jealous of anyone, especially Rian, who gets to work so close to this extraordinary cast and crew — truly an amazing group. So in that regard, sure. But honestly, I’m also relieved to have gotten that chance to do a ‘Star Wars’ movie.”
