Jason Reitman is directing a new Ghostbusters movie for Sony.
The director of Thank You For Smoking, Juno and Up in the Air will be following his father’s footsteps, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 Ghostbusters. The director has reportedly been working on the project for some time under the code name “Rust City.”
Reitman and Gil Kenan are writing the script. Gil Kenan worked as director of the animated Adam Sandler movie Monster House. Ghostbusters would go into production this summer with a 2020 release. Sony describes the film as “the next chapter in the original story,” suggesting it would be closer to the original Ghostbusters movie than 2016, all-female reboot.
However, it begs the question, who is starring in the upcoming remake? Would we expect to the cast of the all-female reboot in the new Ghostbusters movie? Is Bill Murray coming out to join the cast? What about Dan Aykroyd? Ernie Hudson?
The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Reitman is casting a group of four teens: Two boys, two girls, who would presumably serve as this entry’s main characters. It seems clear that the story would center around these teens taking up the Ghostbusters business, whether or not they have cast the members from the original to act as mentors are currently unknown.
Reitman returned to feature films in 2018 after a four-year hiatus. Both his Tully and The Front Runner performed pretty well int he box office. You can watch a teaser trailer for the film below.
