Are 37-Year-Old Actresses Too Old for Hollywood? Maggie Gyllenhaal reveals how she was turned down for a role for being too old.
It’s tough for women in Hollywood and A-list actors are no exception. Recently, TheWrap spoke with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister, about being turned down for a role in a movie because she was too old to play the love interest for a 55-year-old man.
From TheWrap:
“There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time,” she said during an interview for an upcoming issue of TheWrap Magazine. “I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made feel angry, and then it made me laugh.”
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has asked the state and federal government to investigate Hollywood studios, networks and talent agencies over gender discrimination.
The San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film asserted that there are a a lot less jobs available for female actors and the numbers get worse as women get older.
But, this is old news. Even Denzel Washington commented on the fact that it is tough for older women to last in Hollywood unless you’re extremely talented.
Maggie Gyllenhaal declined to say which movie she was considered too old, but if you have an idea, share it with us in the comments below!
