Commercial Acting Tips

Commercials are short, but they’re challenging to act in. You have to convey a lot of information in a concise amount of time and do it engagingly. Here are some tips to help you nail your next commercial audition.

  1. Be Natural

The first thing you need to remember is to be natural. This may seem common sense, but it’s one of the most important things about commercial acting. You don’t want to appear stiff or rehearsed because that’s different from how people act. Instead, try to be as natural and relaxed as possible. Please take a deep breath and let it out slowly before you start your audition, and focus on being in the moment.

  1. Know Your Lines

Of course, you need to know your lines before stepping foot in the audition room. But that doesn’t mean you should be a robot and recite them without emotion or feeling. Instead, try to internalize the words and what they mean. What is your character trying to say? How do they feel about what they’re saying? Once you’ve figured that out, it will be much easier to deliver your lines with conviction.

  1. Be Animated

Commercials are all about being over-the-top and exaggerated, so don’t be afraid to let loose and have some fun with it. Be as animated as possible, and sell your advertising product or service. Use your body language and facial expressions to drive home your point, and ensure your energy is up so that you come across as enthusiastic.

  1. Be Confident

Confidence is critical in any audition, but it’s essential in commercial auditions. Remember that you’re selling something, so you must believe what you’re saying. It will be tough to convince anyone else to consider what you’re saying if you don’t sound confident. So stand tall, make eye contact, and speak with conviction.

  1. Take Direction Well

Commercials are all about being able to take direction well. The director or casting agent will likely tell you how they want you to deliver your lines or perform specific actions. It’s vital that you listen carefully and then adjust accordingly. Don’t be afraid to try something different than what you had initially planned, and always be open to feedback.
