List of companies now hiring during the Coronavirus outbreak.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans are unemployed. In fact, 70,000 more Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week March 14th, a 33% spike, the United States Labor Department blames on the Coronavirus outbreak-related layoffs.
Hotel and restaurants had the largest amount of layoffs. Marriott International, told Wall Street Journal, that they are furloughing about two-thirds of its 4,000 employees at its headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, in addition to a un-specified number of hotel workers as travel decreases worldwide. Other hotel owners are letting go of employees.
That said, major retailers and grocery stores are now hiring, as food and medicine are the emergency supplies Americans need during the pandemic, major retailers are hiring people to work during the pandemic.
Walmart
Walmart says they plan to hire 150,000 new workers by the end of May to work in its stores and the distribution hubs. The jobs will start as temporary, the company explained, but will eventually become into full-time positions.
Walmart says they are streamlining their hiring process for cashiers and stockers. Usually, it takes two weeks for a new employee to get hired. But, as part of the new application process, it will only take 24 hours. For those already working at Walmart, the supercenter is promising a bonus of $300 for full-time hourly workers and $150 for part-time hourly workers, payable on April 2nd.
Amazon
As we previously reported, Amazon is hiring 100,000 new full and part-time workers. The company is raising wages for its existing workers. The increase is $2/hour for U.S. workers.
Both Walmart and Amazon said they would be making an effort to hire people out of work in the hospitality, restaurant and travel industry. But, they did not reveal a formal process for finding unemployed workers for those jobs.
Grocery Stores
Grocery stores are also hiring to keep up with increased demand for stocking goods. Amazon, Albertsons, Cosentino’s, Kroger and Safeway are all hiring, according to Newsweek.
Safeway tweeted, “We need your help. We’re hiring for immediate openings! Apply at your local store or online now!”
Lineage Logistics, a major refrigerated warehousing company, plans to hire 2,000 new workers to meet a 30% jump in demand recently, the NYT reports.
