Atlanta casting directors are working together to increase the pay for background actors.
In a recent casting call, Tammy Smith Casting of Atlanta, posted a Facebook message breaking the news. “we (the entire extras casting director community of Atlanta) are in the process of getting the productions to raise this rate.” While this is exciting news, Tammy Smith adds that the exact time when this new pay rate will be increased has not been announced.
Traditionally, Atlanta background extras earn around $8 per hour working on the set of TV shows or movies. Featured and specialty roles give extras the opportunity to earn upwards of over $500/day.
Meanwhile, in California, the state announced their plan to increase the minimum wage in the state to $15/hour. As a result, background actors in the West Coast could earn nearly twice as much as an extra in Georgia.
Currently, there are well over 40 TV shows and movies filming in Georgia. In fact, some of the biggest movies and TV shows have filmed in Georgia including Jumanji, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Stranger Things.
Stay tuned for updates.
