Job Description
The Boston Globe is looking for an experienced journalist to join our team as an assistant metro editor, a critical role to help shape coverage for New England’s largest newsroom.
The assistant editor will oversee a team of reporters within Metro, the Globe’s largest and most widely read department. This position is ideal for a journalist who values the importance of local news and is excited to join a growing newsroom that is charting a successful course through this turbulent industry, as demonstrated by the Globe’s 235,000 digital subscribers. Prior experience and interest in covering criminal justice a plus, but not a requirement.
The editor will bring an entrepreneurial spirit, a sharp eye for news, and a steady stream of ideas as a member of a core 12-person editing team. The editor will share our zeal for accountability journalism and further our efforts to hold the region’s powerful accountable through in-depth features, groundbreaking investigations, and sterling beat coverage. The ideal candidate also should want to shape coverage that reflects and highlights the diversity of the region.
Additionally, the editor will have a superior touch with copy and reliably deliver stories with nuance, sensitivity, creativity, and humor. However, we are also willing to consider an experienced reporter without prior editing experience. This person should be collegial, flexible, and calm under pressure. The job will be based in the Globe’s downtown Boston headquarters.
Responsibilities
- An excellent journalist who can think creatively about how we approach stories, beats, and coverage.
- A skilled wordsmith able to shape copy and elevate stories that can be the cornerstone of daily coverage.
- An innovative thinker who spots original angles in the news and has a knack for finding hidden gems that turn into captivating stories.
- A newshound who thrives on breaking stories and can own a competitive, ongoing news cycle.
- A digitally-savvy journalist who can inject urgency into coverage and understand the importance of delivering real-time information to the Globe’s 235,000 digital subscribers, as well as coach reporters on how to meet our digital-first goals.
- An empathetic and flexible leader who enjoys working as part of a collaborative team as well as across departments.
- Someone who believes deeply in the Globe’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, both in our coverage and the workplace.
- A caring leader and willing mentor who can support and uplift the next generation of Globe reporters.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years journalism experience as a reporter and/or editor, the majority of that involving local news.
- A proven record of conceptualizing and producing high-octane work. The ideal candidate would demonstrate experience working on breaking news as well as writing and/or editing authoritative stories on daily and longer-term deadlines.
- A demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately on tight deadlines.
- A versatile journalist who is also accomplished at crafting creative enterprise stories and tackling compelling longer-term projects.
- Management or other leadership experience is a plus, but this role would also be an excellent opportunity for an experienced reporter looking to make the transition to editing.
- Comfortable with change and working within a dynamic team environment.
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
