UK Producers are “Terrified” of Hiring Black Filmmakers

According to a new report, the UK’s history of not hiring minority actors and filmmakers is causing many European entertainment industry professionals to ditch London and head to Hollywood and even Atlanta, Georgia.

The Independent.co.uk, recently exposed the United Kingdom’s history of not providing job opportunity to non-white actors and filmmakers. For example, as Ian Burrell pointed out, only 2.5% of UK directors are non-white.

Detailed research from Directors UK has found that only 3.5 per cent of British directors (214 out of 6,032) are of black and minority ethnic (BAME) heritage and that they direct disproportionately few (1.5 per cent) TV programmes.

In fact, out of 15,000 TV shows and movies, none of the “period dramas, chat shows, game shows or reality shows” employed a non-white director.

So why is the United Kingdom, the home of Hollywood’s biggest non-white actors including Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor only hiring Caucasian actors?

Apparently, producers are “terrified” of employing non-white directors.

Directors UK described its finding as “shocking”. Andrew Chowns, its chief executive, said producers are “terrified” of employing directors from beyond a narrow, trusted pool. “Commissioners always say they’re interested in innovative ideas and want people to surprise them. They should put their money where their mouth is,” he said.

This means thousands of non-white aspiring filmmakers are moving to the United States, which is providing more opportunities for British actors and directors. For example, Idris Elba directed episodes on The Wire, David Harewood directed episodes for Homeland and Lennie James even worked on the highly controversial series The Walking Dead.

It is important to point out that David Oyelowo, a British actor who played Martin Luther King, Jr in the Oscar-nominated movie Selma, recently told Radio Times: “I shouldn’t have to feel like I have to move to America to have a notable career.”

Study: ‘Star Wars’ Fans Are More Likely to Be ‘Depressed’

According to a new study, if you enjoy Star Wars and video games, you are “more likely to be narcissist and experience depression”

The study suggests people that take part in “geeky events” are apparently more likely to have an “elevated grandiose” level of narcissism, according a study conducted by the University of Georgia.

Psychologists looked at the personality traits of those who turn to “geek culture”, creating a Geek Culture Identity Scale to help quantify their numbers.

The study found that those who scored highly on both scales are more likely to be narcissists. The lead researcher argued, “Geek culture is a subculture of enthusiasts that is traditionally associated with obscure media like Japanese animation, science fictions and video games.

“However, geek culture is becoming increasingly mainstream. In the past year alone, New York Comic-Con, one of the premier geek conventions in the United States, attracted over 130,000 attendees.

“Our findings suggest that geek media is especially attractive to narcissists, independent of demographic variables.”

From Independent:

Subjects are scored on a scale of one to five, depending on how often they take part in activities such as live action role playing games, Dungeons and Dragons, cosplaying, puppetry, robotics – and enjoying things such as video games and Star Wars.

Those behind the study said the findings were linked to those who scored highly on the Geek Scale and those showed higher levels of neuroticism and non-clinical depression.

Steven Spielberg is headed to Louisiana to shoot one of the most anticipated movies of 2016, Ready Player One.

According to Nola.com, Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi virtual reality feature film is planning to start shooting in Louisiana as soon as 2016.

According to reports, the movie will be directed by Spielberg for Warner Bros. through his Amblin Entertainment production company. Producers are planning to start filming as soon as July 2016 and eight days of filming in late September inside of Louisiana. Johnny Depp is Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actor

Here are Hollywood’s 10 most overpaid actors of 2015, according to Forbes.

Johnny Depp is having a tough year. Earlier this year it was reported that his wife is facing years in prison for smuggling dogs into Australia while he was filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie. In addition, several of his big budget feature films have flopped in the box office. Ultimately, Johnny Depp’s career as a leading man maybe coming to an end.

Johnny Depp

According to a new study, Johnny Depp has been named the most overpaid movie star in Hollywood by Forbes magazine after releasing several box office bombs.

Johnny Depp is one of the highest paid actors in the universe. Currently, to hire Depp for a movie you have to pay the actor at least $30 million. However, a study has shown that the return on investment for hiring Johnny Depp is horrible. In fact, just $1.20 for every $1 he was paid according to the financial magazine’s metric.

So what happened to Johnny Depp and his acting career? Well, the latest string of box office movies were major flops. Mortdecai, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger, all bombed in the box office. The Long Ranger was the biggest box office bomb, with Disney losing upwards of $150 million on the production. But, Mortdecai did even worse with just $47.7 million at the box office against a production budget of $30 million, which means 50% of production costs went to straight to paying Johnny Depp.

However, Johnny Depp maybe on his way towards a comeback. For example, his acting in the Whitey Bulger biopic, Black Mass has critics praising his performance.

Denzel Washington

But, Johnny Depp is not alone. In fact, all 10 “most overpaid” actors are on the list including Denzel Washington who returned only who returned just $6.50 for each $1 he was paid – still more than five times what Depp made. Denzel Washington’s acting is not selling tickets like it used to. THe last three movies, The Equalizer, 2 Guns and Flight all lost money. So, Denzel Washington may just be overrated along with Johnny Depp.

Will Ferrell

In third place is Will Ferrell, who topped Forbes “overpaid” list in the past. However, this time around the actor/comedian earned $6.80 for every $1 he was paid. Who else is included on the list? Here is the break down:

Forbes’ most overpaid actors in Hollywood 2015

1. Johnny Depp: $1.20 per $1
2. Denzel Washington: $6.50 per $1
3. Will Ferrell: $6.80 per $1
4. Liam Neeson: $7.80 per $1
5. Will Smith: $8.60 per $1
6. Christian Bale: $9.20 per $1
7. Channing Tatum: $10.80 per $1
8. Brad Pitt: $12.00 per $1
9. Ben Affleck: $12.30 per $1
10. Tom Cruise: $13.60 per $1

Here’s How Much Money ‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ Cast Got Paid

Star Wars’ Harrison Ford was paid 50x more than newcomers, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.

After making over $500 million in the box office, Star Wars will definitely be able to pay their cast members a lot more money. But, how much money did The Force Awakens cast earn to star in the latest Star Wars movie?

According to sources close to Variety, Harrison Ford earned the most money. In fact, sources reveal the actor received $10 to $20 million to reprise his role of Han Solo in the movie. This is substantially higher than his co-stars. In fact, Variety reports Mark Hamill and Carrie fisher made low-seven figures and the newcomers, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were only paid between $100k to $300k to star in the movie.

Surprisingly Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac were able to negotiate a higher pay due to their previous acting experiences.

Because Driver and Isaac had fixed quotes from previous film and TV work, sources say their deals were negotiated higher compared to Boyega and Ridley, who, for the most part, had never appeared in a large-scale film before.

And while there are rumors suggesting why Harrison Ford was paid more, it still demonstrates how Hollywood has the tendency to pay low wages to newer actors, especially with so many negotiations involve back-end box office bonus checks. In fact, the first Fifty Shades of Grey, the movie stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan received six figures and later renegotiated into a multi-million dollar contract for sequels.

STUDY: Nearly 40% of ‘Star Wars’ Actors Never Work Again

‘Star Wars’ movies may destroy actors’ acting careers.

As production ramps up for the next Star Wars movie, casting directors are lining up actors to audition for movie roles that could possibly change their lives forever. However, what if I told you, starring in a Star Wars movie will actually hurt your acting career? Would you believe me? Probably not. But, according to a new study, actors that star in Star Wars movies struggle to land movie roles outside of the franchise.

A couple of years ago Natalie Portman revealed that working on Star Wars hurt her acting career. Portman recalled in an interview with New York magazine. “I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me.”

Natalie Portman is not alone. According to a study by Five Thirty Eight, if you work on a Star Wars movie your acting career is basically dead (unless you’re Samuel L. Jackson).

From Five Thirty Eight:

Across the whole set, appearing in a Star Wars film is no guarantee of future success. Only half of the performers appeared in two or more subsequent non-Star Wars films. Only 1 in five managed to do eight or more subsequent films. About 36 percent never worked again.

In fact, characters who are associated with either the Jedi or the Rebellion have the highest number of post-Star Wars movie roles, with an average of 7.6 roles.

Actors may never work again but, the Star Wars franchise is making Disney millions. The seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series, it stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega,Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong’o. According to reports, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has earned $248 million in the United States and $281 million internationally for a worldwide total of $529 million, against a budget of $200 million. In less than a week, Star Wars has more than doubled their investment.

Harry Potter’s History of Recasting and Changing Characters’ Races

Did you know Harry Potter’s “Lavender Brown” character was first black but later recast to white?

Recently J.K Rowling revealed her support of casting a black actor to play Hermione in the upcoming Harry Potter stage play and while this sparked controversy for Harry Potter franchise. But, this is not the first Harry Potter casting directors changed the race of the movie’s character.

In the movie version of Harry Potter, Lavender Brown was initially black but, was later changed to a white actress in order to play Ron Weasley’s girlfriend.

Here’s how Harry Potter describes Lavender Brown:

At first, Lavender had been very annoyed that nobody had thought to tell her that Ron was in the hospital wing — “I mean, I am his girlfriend!” — but unfortunately she had now decided to forgive Harry this lapse of memory and was keen to have lots of in-depth chats with him about Ron’s feelings, a most uncomfortable experience that Harry would have happily forgone.—Harry Potter’s description of Lavender.

According to the book franchise, Lavender Brown was a pure-blood witch, that started her career the same year as Harry Potter. In the movie version, Lavender Brown was initially played by Kathleen Cauley in the second film, and then in a non-speaking role by Jennifer Smith in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. While she did not have any lines and was never mentioned by name, she appeared in several scenes. However, she was played by Jessie Cave in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2.

But, many fans have speculated as to why Lavender Brown’s actress was changed for Half Blood Prince. HarryPotter.Wikia attempts to  explains why casting directors decided to change the race for the character:

  • Many fans speculate as to why Lavender Brown’s actress was changed for Half Blood Prince, but the reasoning is quite simple. Before Half Blood Prince, Lavender Brown played no major role, she was portrayed by two separate actresses in the second and third film and was a background character.
  • Background characters have no specific casting, which is why multiple people can portray them. Usually they are given character names just to keep order on a film set. Lavender Brown, as a major character role, was not cast until the sixth film.
  • The filmmakers had no way of knowing she would play such a role when they assigned her name to the background actresses from previous films, which is why her actress changed in the sixth film.

Casting a white actress in a role that had previously been played by black actresses, sparked controversy with many people bashing the franchise for white-washing the cast.

Tumblr account Tumblr Is Weird broke down their feelings against Harry Potter for changing the race of the character.

Now don’t get me wrong. She did a wonderful job as Lavender. But, in the interest of continuity, why did she become white. And it begs to ask: what hell would have been raised if they had cast a black actress as Lavender in the Half Blood Prince?

They wanted to have an audience who could identify with Lavender as a British girl who was in love for the first time and head over heals, but it couldn’t be a black girl, because no one would identify with her enough. So they white washed the character, and tried to erase the roles of Jennifer Smith and Kathleen Cauley (try to look up pictures of them in relation to Lavender Brown, next to difficult, now look up Jessie Cave. Everywhere.)

Harry Potter Fans are Pissed After Casting ‘Black Hermione’

Harry Potter fans are outraged after casting directors cast a black actress to play Hermione.

Casting for the upcoming London play about the now older Harry Potter characters, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, has been announced. And many Harry Potter fans are pissed off a black actress is playing Hermione.

Actress , who is currently starring the hit play Linda, is taking Emma Watson’s role as Hermione in the U.K. production. Meanwhile, J.K. Rowling, the author and playwright behind the Harry Potter franchise, reveals she approves of the casting call. But, many fans are complaining and upset about the fact that producers decided to cast a black actress to play Hermione.

But, many fans are firing back supporting the casting decision:

The play features Jamie Parker as the new Harry Potter and actor Paul Thornley for playing Ron Weasley. Rowling issued a statement saying, “I’m so excited with the choice of casting for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I can’t wait to see Jamie, Noma and Paul bring the adult Harry, Hermione and Ron to life on stage next summer.” In addition, Rowling pointed out that she never said Hermione was white.

The play hits London on July 30th with previews starting June 7th at London’s Palace Theatre.

‘Star Wars’ Fans Are Pissed After Movie Projectors Break

Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie projector breaks during Thursday night screening.

A projector broke down at Hollywood’s Arclight Cinemas on Thursday night midway through a screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, according to reports. To make things worse, it then skipped towards the end of the movie.

Several videos posted online Friday show theatergoers seriously freaking out, and others not so much.

Erik Melendez posted a video to Facebook, where he claimed the film was “spoiled” by the glitch and “everyone in the theater went crazy.”

The theater went into mayhem, people ran out, yelling ‘Stop the movie!’ [and] closing their eyes — anything to not witness a spoiler,” he later told LAist.

The issue was eventually fixed and the movie continued playing, according to CBS local news. It has not been revealed what caused the malfunction, and Arclight offered a full refund for all the views, according to Mediate.

Michael Melendez told reporters that “it kind of ruined our night,” adding, “But it’s better to tell these fun stories than the sad ones you hear about.”

Several moviegoers took to Twitter to complain about their ruined Star Wars night:

Despite the malfunction, Marc Pattavina told GeekNation it was a “strangely fun experience”.

“But there’s people who were really hyped to see this and have been anticipating this for a very long time that had to be very let down,” he added.

Amy Schumer: The Critic That Bashed Me Wanted to Date Me

Amy Schumer reveals the critic who called her ugly also tried to date her.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Amy Schumer said that a critic who has written about her unfortunate looks in a Trainwreck review, later asked her out.

“With Trainwreck coming out, I was like, everyone’s going to say, ‘She’s not pretty enough to be in this movie.’ And then only one dude wrote that, and people really attacked him, and then he redacted that and wanted to date me.”

Talk about a conflict of interest.

Even though Amy Schumer declined to identify the critic, E! Online suggests that it was probably Jeffrey Wells from the website Hollywood Elsewhere. In a review of Trainwreck, wells wrote:

“She’s obviously sharp and clever and funny as far as the woe-is-me, self-deprecating thing goes, but there’s no way she’d be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world. And yet that’s the apparent premise of Apatow’s film. Schumer’s wide facial features reminded me of a blonde Lou Costello around the time of Buck Privates, or Jennifer Aniston’s somewhat heavier, not-as-lucky sister who watches a lot of TV.”

Wells later apologized. In his apology, Wells wrote that Amy Schumer was “not grade-A or even B-plus material, certainly by my standards as well as those of any moderately attractive, fair-minded youngish heterosexual dude who’s feeling hormonal or what-have-you.”

EPISODE 214
DATES: 1/4/15 to 1/14/15
RATE: $80/8

To be considered, you MUST also send in a submission email to extras4empire@gmail.com with the following:

1) Subject Line: Empire Survey Photo 214

2) Name, age, height, weight, phone number, email address and zip code.

3) A recent photo of yourself in a jpeg format. No selfies. No sunglasses or hats. We need to see your face.

If we already contacted you about a booking, you do not need to fill out the survey for this episode.

Are you registered with us? If not, go to our website and follow the instructions to register with our company.

YOU MUST DO THIS BEFORE COMPLETING THE SURVEY. If we do not have your registration, you CAN NOT be considered.

This serves as an availability check – not a booking. If we are able to book you, it will be on the project we chose based on your responses.

There are 3 steps involved in working on the show:
1. AVAILABILITY CHECK (OR COMPLETING SURVEY)
2. BOOKING EMAIL
3. CALL INFO

Here’s an explanation of what those steps are!

1. AVAILABILITY CHECK:
A few days before each episode shoots, you will receive an availability check for the dates we need you. You will need to respond with your availability for those dates ASAP. Or complete a survey with your availability.

An availability check does NOT mean you are booked!

Once we receive everyone’s availability, we will book people based on the needs of the production for those days.

2. BOOKING EMAIL
If you are booked, you will receive a BOOKING EMAIL. It will give you the details of the days you are booked to work. You must respond to your booking or you will be replaced.

If you respond to the AVAILABILITY CHECK or FILL OUT SURVEY, and don’t receive a booking email, it means that you are not needed for that particular episode. We will do our best to get a booking email to you no later than 48 hours of the shoot date.

If production has last minute changes, this can sometimes lead to a cancellation. We will do our best to book you at a later date if this happens.

3. CALL INFO
The day before your booking you will receive your CALL INFO. You can expect this email to arrive some time between 8:00PM and 11:00PM. This is because we do not get the official call times until they are finished filming on that current day. When you receive your CALL INFO email you are REQUIRED to respond. This is how we know you have received the information and that you will be there.
