About First Man:

Josh Singer, who earned an Oscar for his Spotlight screenplay, wrote First Man based on James Hansen’s biography, First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong. Gosling has reportedly been tied to the project since late last year, but only inked a deal to star in the film earlier this year.

After serving as a Navy pilot in World War II, Neil Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the precursor to NASA, as a test pilot and engineer. His first mission as an astronaut was Gemini 8 in 1962, during which he performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space. On July 21st, 1969 he became the first person to walk on the moon as part of Apollo 11.

GWC is seeking a REAL kids baseball team to portray a Little League team for season 3 of Showtime’s BILLIONS!

Ages 10-14, all male OR co-ed!

Exterior day shoot. Surrounding NYC area.

All minors MUST have valid NY Child Performer Work Permit and trust account set up (or be willing to set both up if not already in place!)

Roald Dahl’s Charlie Was Originally Black

Roald Dahl’s popular children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic for generations of readers. But the book, about a poor young boy who wins a golden ticket to tour the magical candy factory of the business genius Willy Wonka, almost looked extremely different.

On Wednesday, Dahl’s widow, Liccy Dahl, told BBC Radio 4 that when her late husband originally dreamed up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it starred “a little black boy.” As to why that was changed, she said, “I don’t know. It’s a great pity.”

The answer came from Dahl’s biographer Donald Sturrock, who revealed: “it was his agent who thought it was a bad idea when the book was first published, to have a black hero.”

According to the Huffington Post, Dahl’s agent was likely Shelia St. Lawrence, who has been credited with being a significant influence Dahl. In 2014, Sturrock told Vanity Fair that St. Lawrence worked closely with the author urging him to cut down on wild narratives and the initially large cast.

She has had a part to play with removing a black boy from the movie.  “She said people would ask: ‘Why?’” Sturrock said.

The decision to remove a black child from a book is a challenge many authors face. Publishers have considered whiteness to be the default character and expect that a nonwhite character must serve a particular purpose in a book’s narrative. That by being nonwhite, their race and ethnicity will have a significant impact on the book’s storyline, plot devices, and other narrative ploys.

The incident speaks to how whitewashing in the film industry can take place in many different parts of the creative process not only the casting room but in the early writings of a novel. Not only did Charlie and the Chocolate Factory end up starring a white boy, so too did the major motion pictures based on the book, which featured white actors as Charlie and the rest of the Bucket family.

It is important to highlight the fact that Dahl is no stranger to criticism. He received a significant backlash for the racially problematic Oompa Loompa characters. The NAACP and others argued that the factory workers, which originally depicted as pygmies from Africa, reinforced racial stereotypes of African slavery. He said his intent all along was anti-racist, explaining, “I saw them as charming creatures, whereas the white kids in the books were … most unpleasant.” That said, the criticism was so harsh that Dahl rewrote the characters to make them light-skinned, long-haired beings from an artificial island.

It will be interesting to see if the upcoming Willy Wonka reboot will now include a black boy in the cast of the new movie.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 is Now Casting Two Speaking Roles

Production on Game of Thrones season 8 is set to begin in October but the pre-production and casting process has already begun. According to Watchers on the Wall, casting directors are now casting actors to fill new roles in the final season of the show.

HBO is looking to fill two roles including:

  • A Northern Girl. This character is 8-10 years old, was brought up in a family of soldiers, and displays “dauntlessness and integrity.” The role is said to be “very nice stand-out part for a strong-minded young girl with a fighting spirit.”
  • A Boy. This character is 8-12 years old, physically fit, and comes from a poor background; kid had to fight to carve out a place for himself in the world. The actor needs to “completely own the scenes that he appears in.” Note that that’s ‘scenes’ with an ‘s’. This character will appear more than once.

While it is possible to attempt to crack the code behind the casting call breakdown, it may be difficult to ever discover what HBO is looking for. Especially considering how HBO is now planning on a new misdirection creative strategy to distract audiences and avoid spoilers. Jennifer Lawrence on Her New Movie ‘Mother!’: “we took it too far”

Jennifer Lawrence reveals her first reactions to seeing her new movie Mother! And it is not what you would expect.

Earlier this week, the movie’s director Darren Aronofsky discussed his approach to the film at the New York screening of his new psychological theater. “You’re laughing and smiling now, but you’re all going to really hate me in about an hour and a half. So the first thing I want to do is apologize,” he said.

The movie, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, has received significant attention and mixed reviews since the film debuted last week at the Venice Film Festival. Some praised the movie, while others say it does not meet their expectations. However, another group of critics argues that the film may just be pushing audiences too far.

One person in the latter category is Jennifer Lawrence. “I was really shaken. My first reaction [to seeing the film] was that we took it too far,” said Lawrence. “But then after the images died down a little bit, [the movie’s] exactly what we’re supposed to be doing and what we need to be doing. We have a message and if we watered it down to make people comfortable then what’s the point? Why even make it?”

The movie focuses on Jennifer Lawrence, a homemaker, and Bardem, a former poet, whose lives turned upside down when two strangers arrive at their home.

After working on the movie, Lawrence said that she is focusing on challenging roles and working with directors that will push her further.

Aronofsky told Variety that his approach to this film is different than previous projects. “The same pattern and rhythm isn’t interesting to me, so I wanted to take one emotion and make it into a movie. A lot of people call it different things: it’s rage, insatiability and it’s for you guys to decide what it is.”

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 To Film Multiple Endings to Prevent Spoilers

In order to keep the ending of the final season of Game of Thrones a secret, HBO has decided to use misdirection to keep spoilers from hitting the internet.

According to reports, HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys said several different endings will be shot to prevent the ending from being spoiled online.

“I know in ‘Game of Thrones,’ the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens,” Bloys said during a speech at Moravian College, per local outlet The Morning Call. “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”

It is important to point out the show’s most recent season was hit by hackers who released episodes online early when HBO would not meet their ransom demands.

The multiple endings strategy is not new. Apparently, AMC’s Breaking Bad, and HBO’s The Sopranos both created false endings to avoid spoilers.

The final season of Game of Thrones will start filming in October and may continue until late August 2018.

“Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take,” Bloys said.
