Actor Ian McKellen says actresses in the 1960s looking for work would write DRR (directors rights respected) on their headshots as a code that they would offer sex for a speaking role in the production.
Speaking at the Oxford Union on December 6, the 78-year-old actor, responded to a question regarding the Harvey Weinstein scandal. After refusing to comment in depth on allegations in Kevin Spacey, McKellen said he hoped “we are going through a period which will help to eradicate it [harassment] all together”.
He then shared a story from his early days in the theater that suggested women were as much to blame for the problem as men.
“From my own experience… when I was starting out in the early ’60s, the director of the theatre I was working at showed me some photographs he got from women who were wanting jobs, they were actors, some of them had at the bottom of their photograph DRR – directors’ rights respected. In other words, if you give me a job, you can have sex with me,” McKellen said.
“That was commonplace from people who proposed that they should be a victim. Madness. People have taken advantage of that and encouraged it and it absolutely will not do.”
McKellen said “people taking advantage of their power is utterly reprehensible anywhere it happens, within the family … in the workplace, doesn’t have to be the theatre, doesn’t have to be Hollywood, it could be the local shop. It could be parliament, wherever it happens, it won’t do. People must be called out, and it’s sometimes very difficult for victims to do that.”
However, he also called for honest to stop the number of false allegations. “I assume nothing but good will come out of these revelations, even though some people get wrongly accused – there’s that side of it as well. Honesty. Honesty. Honesty.”
A man who once competed on the ABC reality TV series Shark Tank was arrested last week in a drug sweep that took down nine members of a cocaine-distribution ring in New Jersey, NJ.com reports.
John DePaola was charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine in the drug swap, which also led to the arrest of alleged ringleader Hugo Hernandez.
According to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the arrests took place following a nine-month investigation called Operation Snowball.
Prosecutors said that the ring was “moving approximately one-third of a kilogram of cocaine a week,” and that the investigation led to the seizure of more than 721 grams of cocaine as well as $14,943.
DePaola competed on Shark Tank in 2014 and he was looking for an investor for a cover that protects wet paint brushes from dying out, according to NJ.com. He would ultimately land a $200,000 deal from shark Lori Grenier.
Describing his client as a “highly regarded individual in the community,” DePaola’s lawyer, Herbert Ellis, called the charge “a mistake.”

In a recent interview with Big Think, Bryan Cranston explained what it takes to be an actor.
Actor Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Trumbo, Last Flag Flying) is arguably one of the greatest actors of his generation. But he has a remarkable perspective on art and how its tenets might be useful to other areas of life. For instance, Bryan posits, don’t get into something unless your heart is fully in it. This applies to actors signing up for projects they’re not earnestly invested in just as much as it does people working in jobs they aren’t passionate about. “Trust your feelings. Trust your instincts,” Bryan says, because embracing ambiguity instead of looking at life as a series of steps leading to a goal can lead to a much healthier outlook.

There is a vocal group of fans that were not too happy with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which has contributed to low audience scores across several rating and review platforms.
Currently, the Rotten Tomatoes critic score for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is at 93 percent, the audience score is at a low 57 percent. This is a major divide that can also be found on IMDB and Metacritic. The opinions expressed clearly have not affected the box office performance since The Last Jedi currently has the fifth highest opening weekend of all-time.
Speaking to Deadline today, Walt Disney Studios President of Theatrical Distribution Dave Hollis stated that the studio is not concerned whatsoever with the low audience scores, and think that the conversations this film sparks will lead to good word-of-mouth for the holiday weekend next week:
“Rian Johnson, the cast, and the Lucasfilm team have delivered an experience that is totally Star Wars yet at the same time fresh, unexpected and new. That makes this a Star Wars film like audiences have never seen – it’s got people talking, puzzling over its mysteries, and it’s a lot to take in, and we see that as all positive, that should help set the film up for great word-of-mouth and repeat viewing as we enter the lucrative holiday period.”
Whether or not low audience scores will hurt the box office remains to be seen. However, it is clear Disney and Lucasfilm are not too upset.

The first major obstacles for the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox are currently being put in place by members in Congress.
According to Variety, members of the Senate and House antitrust subcommittees are calling for hearings over the pending $66 billion purchase by Disney. While this was expected, with the process taking an estimated 12 to 18 months, the speed that some members of Congress are moving is similar to the AT&T and Time Warner merger, which was announced in October.
From Variety:
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary antitrust subcommittee, said that the proposed transaction was “another industry-changing merger, which would have major implications in television, film, and media.”
“I’m concerned about the impact of this transaction on American consumers,” she said…
Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), who is the ranking member of the House Judiciary’s antitrust subcommittee, called for a close look at the transaction.
He said in a statement, he said that the country was at a “monopoly moment.”
“Disney’s proposed purchase of 21st Century Fox threatens to put control of TV, movie, and news content into the hands of a single media giant.”
“If it’s approved, this merger could allow Disney to limit what consumers can watch and increase their cable bills. Disney will gain more than 300 channels, 22 regional sports networks, control over Hulu, and a significant portion of Roku.”
Nothing has been scheduled so far, but Variety points out that some major mergers have come before public hearings in the past. The Justice Department will also review the merger, but this is a different process and does not require the approval of Congress.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming 2′ auditions for the role of “Gwen Stacy” keep popping up online.
According to Omega Underground, the news outlet has uncovered another audition tape suggesting an open casting call for European actresses is underway for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. There have been two leaked audition tapes for the Gwen Stacy, which have many news outlets speculating a new character will be added to the franchise, this time around a foreign exchange student.
According to the comic books, the comic book character Gwen Stacy is a blonde haired/blue eyed American, but this new version could perhaps be a foreign exchange student who ends up attending Peter’s school. Keep in mind, Homecoming has already put their own spins on characters such as MJ played by Zendaya and Ned Leeds played by Jacob Batalon.
Not much is currently known about the sequel, other than that it will be directed by Jon Watts and is set for release on July 5, 2019.

According to IMDB, Shaft will film in Atlanta, Georgia. How will the new GOP tax bill affect actors and filmmakers in the film industry?
A new report by The Hollywood Reporter conducted by Actors Equity shows taxes rising as much as 300% for many actors, writers, directors, and crew.
About the GOP Tax Bill:
On Wednesday, Congressional Republicans agreed on a new bill that eliminates common deductions for agent and manager commissions, union dues, training classes and other business expenses but, preserving deductions of those items for high-earning talents, who use an accounting feature called a loan-out corporation.
How does a loan-out corporation work?
According to Forbes, “The loan out corporation receives monies from contracts with other businesses and pays a salary to the entertainer for services performed. Meanwhile, the loan out corporation provides essential services to the entertainer, from accounting and legal, to coaching and agency fees. All business expenses incurred are deductible because the entertainer is officially an employee of the loan out company.”
How will the new GOP Tax Bill affect actors?
According to the analysis, some working actors could see their taxes nearly quadruple. As THR explains, “the poor suffer the worst increases, the middle-class gets hit hard, and the wealthy benefit from tax cuts.”
Equity secretary-treasurer Sandra Kaas, who is also a practicing tax lawyer, prepared her estimates. She said in an interview the new tax bill, “will change the math on how long people can stay in the industry.”
Using real tax-returns from working actors, here are a few examples of how the new tax bill will affect actors, according to The Hollywood Reporter:
* An actor who earned about $97,000 (about three-quarters from pension and investments) paid $12,434 in taxes, but would have paid $15,579 under the new law, an increase of $3,145 or 25 percent.
* Another actor, who earned over $87,000 paid $9,665 in taxes, but would have paid $13,294 under the Republican legislation, an increase of $3,629 or 37 percent.
* An actor who earned about $28,000 paid taxes of $513 but would have paid $1,726 if the new law had been in place, an increase of $1,213 or 236 percent. That means his/her taxes more than tripled.
* A married couple, both performers, who earned about $65,000 (or about $32,000 each) paid $1,228 in taxes but would have owed $4,535 under the new law, an increase of $3,307 or 269 percent. In other words, their taxes nearly quadrupled.
Ultimately, business expenses add up to 20% to 35% of a worker’s income, and none of it will be deductible anymore unless an actor creates a loan-out corporation.
Carrie Fisher’s beloved dog Gary had an emotional reaction while in attendance for a Los Angeles for a screening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Gary caught the movie on the lap of Fisher’s former assistant. According to ABC 7’s Veronica Miracle, Gary’s ears perked up whenever Fisher’s General Leia appeared in the film.
Gary is a reminder of the late Carrie Fisher, who died before the release of the movie.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi has put up massive box office numbers since debuting. Deadline reports that the film is projected to rake in roughly $220 million in its first three days.
