Netflix is planning on creating 700 original TV series and movies in 2018, which is great news for aspiring actors.
Netflix is planning on spending upwards of $8 billion on content in 2018 and will have around 700 original TV shows and movies on the service this year, according to the company’s CFO David Wells.
A significant amount of new and original content is driving up Netflix’s subscriber base, said Wells, speaking Tuesday at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. The “700-range” figure he cited includes 80 original productions from outside the United States.
Ultimately, the company’s strategy is simple, “Let’s continue to add content — it’s working, it’s driving growth,” Wells said.
When the CFO was asked how much content spending is enough or Netflix, he responded “there’s no magic line where you know exactly where you are” regarding efficiency.
He also said there’s “no religion” at Netflix about the source of programming. However, the company is increasingly planning on creating their content. “People don’t care where the stories come from,” he said. “We’re about having the best content. We don’t necessarily have to do it ourselves.”
Netflix ended 2017 with 117.6 million subscribers around the world. “There are more non-members than members of Netflix – that’s our opportunity,” Wells said, citing an estimated 700 million broadband users globally (excluding China).
Wells also discussed Netflix’s boosting its marketing budget. The company told investors last month that it plans to increase marketing spending more than 50% in 2018, from $1.3 billion last year to $2 billion this year.
“We used to think every incremental dollar was best spent on content,” but it’s increasing spending on marketing because, “we think marketing is a multiplier on the content spend,” Wells said.
When asked about Netflix’s recent five-year exclusive deal with producer Ryan Murphy, Wells said such contracts are somewhat rare. We aren’t doing 10 of them; we aren’t doing 20 of them.” He added, “we like the kind of content he creates,” which appeals to audiences not just in the U.S. but globally, Wells said.
Ultimately, Netflix’s huge billion dollar investment in the film industry and creating new and original content provides hundreds of new opportunities for aspiring actors.
Jennifer Lawrence is taking a tragedy and using it to empower herself.
During Monday night’s New York premiere of her new movie Red Sparrow, Jennifer Lawrence says she felt empowered by the nude scenes int he movie, especially following the 2014 nude photo hack, which left her feeling insecure.
“The insecurity and fear of being judged for getting nude, what I went through, should that dictate decisions I make for the rest of my life? This movie changed that and I didn’t even realize how important changing that mentality was until it was done,” she said at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. “But I also really challenged myself in ways that I never really had before. The foreign accent. The dancing. It was really taking on a very different leaf.”
Lawrence said she was mentally prepared for the movie because director Francis Lawrence warned her ahead of time.
“We talked about it extensively, which was really important for showing up on the day and there being no surprises,” Jennifer Lawrence said. “I knew exactly what was going on and also there was one moment he came out to give me a note and just looked at me like I had clothes, and then I just felt like I had clothes on. I was surrounded by professionals, and everybody was completely professional.”
Francis Lawrence said he gave Lawrence her artistic freedom. She was “the first person to see the movie as a whole with those scenes to be able to say ‘I’m with it’ or ‘we need to talk and make some changes.’ And she was totally with it. She didn’t have me pull anything.”
“Look, I wasn’t sure she was going to want to do the movie. And I pitched her the idea in general, but I didn’t tell her much about the content,” Francis Lawrence said. “She liked the idea of the character in general, and I sort of filled her in a little bit along the way, but I wanted her to wait for the script. She thought about it, because clearly, she knew what the content was going to be. And as soon as she said, ‘I want to do it,’ I said, ‘OK, I’m coming over to your house, and we’re having a really frank conversation.’”

According to Nielsen Live+Same Day data, Sunday’s premiere drew a 3.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.3 million viewers. That is up slightly from the midseason finale ratings (3.4, 7.9 million) in December, but was still the lowest-rated “Walking Dead” midseason premiere to date.
The ratings continue to plummet despite the fact a significant character left the show during the episode after revealing a walker bite in the midseason finale.
That said, The Walking Dead remains the number one show on TV for the day and is the highest rated show on cable Sunday. It is the closest cable competition was its own after the show, Talking Dead, which drew a 1.5 rating and 3.6 million viewers. Also, The Walking Dead remains the number one show on TV among adults 18 to 49 for the sixth season in a row.
Earlier, the Season 8 midseason finale was the hit show’s lowest-rated episode since Season 2. The season 8 premiere was also the show’s lowest-rated since its third season, despite the fact that the Season 8 opener was also the show’s 100th episode.
AMC is making changes.
Last month, AMC announced the series showrunner Scott Gimple is being elevated to the newly created role of the chief content officer, overseeing the entire The Walking Dead TV universe, including The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and potential sequels. Angela Kang, who has been a writer on the show since 2011 and co-executive producer since 2013, is being promoted by Gimple to executive producer and showrunner of “The Walking Dead,” starting with Season 9.
Entertainment industry adds $9.5 billion to Georgia.
Some of the biggest movies in Hollywood filmed in Georgia including Baby Driver, I, Tonya, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Black Panther have all shot in Georgia.As a result, Georgia’s film industry is booming. In fact, Georgia brought in $9.5 billion to the state’s film industry.
The industry has grown in the last decade from $240 million in 2007 to its current $9.5 billion. Now, there are on average of 30 to 40 productions filming at any point in time across the state. That level of growth not only benefits the economy, but it provides jobs to Georgia natives. Moreover, more than 92,000 people in Georgia work in jobs tied to the entertainment industry and 90% of the Walking Dead crew is from Georgia. Furthermore, Marvel Studios movies film in Georgia has steadily continued to hire more and more locally trained crew to keep up with a large number of productions filming in the state.
Georgia’s film industry’s success is all due to the state’s tax credits system. They provide significant cost savings for production companies. According to georgia.org, the state’s Entertainment Industry Investment Act offers a 20 percent tax credit for companies that spend $500,000 or more on production and post-production in Georgia, either in a single production or on multiple projects. The state grants an additional 10 percent tax credit if the finished project includes a promotional logo provided by the state. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also provides easy access for actors and actresses to travel to Georgia.
“All the stuff you need to make a $300 million movie is here,” Stepakoff said, “as well as all the stuff you need to make a 10-episode Netflix streaming series.”
The Georgia Film Academy started in 2015 to help with the demand and create a permanent and sustainable industry and works with 18 institutions across the state. It primarily focuses on working with leaders in the film and TV industry, creating jobs for aspiring film crew workers in Georgia and providing a sustainable and permanent entertainment industry.
We want to make sure that we have the economic engine of the entire entertainment industry here in Georgia—indeed a full ecosystem,” Stepakoff said.
Many of those who have started the Georgia Film Academy have found jobs in below-the-line positions in areas such as grip, electric and lighting, but the academy is adding courses in above-the-line trades such as screenwriting and filmmaking.
“We believe Georgia will be a pre-eminent destination for the film and television industry for many years to come,” Stepakoff said. “It will be a legacy for our state.”

Casting directors are now casting actors, models, and talent to work on scenes filming the week of March 5th in Atlanta, Georgia.
