Acting Agency Gives Ex-Mobsters a Second Chance at Life

Japanese acting agency is giving mobsters a second chance at life with acting gigs.

The Yakuza is known around the world as one of the most powerful organized crime groups in Japan, if not the world. According to CNN, they are involved in everything ranging from extortion to sex trafficking. Those that decide to leave that world behind may have a rough time. But, one acting agency is helping ex-mobsters change their lives.

Some of the men at the Takakura-Gumi acting agency have experience working in the organized crime circuit such as money laundering and even violent crime. Needless to say, method acting is not a prerequisite to joining this acting agency.

“People who live on the right side of the law don’t know the rituals of the Yakuza, or Mafia. We really lived in that world,” said Ryuichi Baba, an actor and ex-mobster told CNN. “We were professional thugs. We can use that to our advantage.”

Baba still has the tattoos of the Yakuza and spent 20 years as a mobster, but left the life of crime six years ago and found purpose in a acting.

“I feel like I moved from hell to heaven,” he said. “While I was a mobster, I felt like I had no control over my fate. Now I feel like I’ve been reborn.”

Despite becoming an actor, he understands acting does not pay the bills and spends his time running a software business.

Yakuza operate in secrecy in a world of unwritten codes filled with honor and loyalty. These are secrets the actors want to share with a larger audience. Kuramoto, the acting agency’s boss and ex-convict, knows many of the Yakuza members and understands that reintegrating into society is like starting over in life.

“It’s really important for us to contribute to society and be accepted by it, and I think the entertainment industry is the fastest way for us to do that,” he said.

Katie Holmes will star in a feature film adaptation of The Secret, the self-help book that theorized that humans can control the universe with their minds and manifest their desires through the “law of attraction.”

The Secret became a pop-cultural phenomenon selling 30 million copies around the world. The movie will focus on a hard-working widow with three children who hires a handyman to fix her house during a storm. When not doing repairs, he shares his philosophy of believing in the power of the universe to do what he wants.

Robert De Niro Reveals His Acting Process: “I always try to do as much research as possible”

Robert De Niro reveals his acting process in a new interview.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Robert De Niro speaks about his past work and why he prefers film to the stage. De Niro admits that sometimes deep research is not required for a role, and remembers one of his most instances in which he went above and beyond to research a character. He says, “I am a perfectionist. I always try to do as much research as possible for a role. For Taxi Driver I did actually drive a cab for a few weeks. It probably wasn’t really necessary, but it was something I wanted to do.”

De Niro also went to great lengths to prepare for a character in the movie Raging Bull. He explains,  “Sometimes the physical can portray the psychological. That’s why I put on 60lb when I played Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull. I had this fascination with the graphic deterioration of his character, which to me was symbolized by his physical decline. I didn’t think using prosthetics would do the same thing.”

De Niro is not known for acting on stage. De Niro has made only one appearance on Broadway in 1986 in the play Cuba & The Teddy Bear and has not done any other stage work. As to why De Niro sticks to feature films. “I prefer movies to theatre. I suppose I’d do a play if I could find a really great new modern one. But I love movies. You can do so much more with film and you can create an illusion. Films last, they are there forever, like a little piece of history.”
