George Takei is PISSED with Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

George Takei is furious with Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

After Tilda Swinton responded to complaints about her casting as Doctor Strange’s the Ancient One, notable actor and equal rights activist George Takei has stepped up to give his perspective on the casting decision.

Marvel has come under fire lately for casting a white actress in the role of someone who is traditionally Asian. The Ancient One has many Tibetan traditions in the Doctor Strange comics, so many fans were disappointed to see Tilda Swinton, a white actress, instead of an Asian actor in a Marvel movie.

Co-writer C. Robert Cargill defended the casting decision explaining:

“The Ancient One comes from a region of the world that is in very weird political place. He originates from Tibet, so if you acknowledge that Tibet is a place, and that he is Tibetan, you risk alienating 1 billion people who think that that’s bullshit, and risk the Chinese government going, ‘Hey, you know, one of the biggest film-watching countries in the world? We’re not going to show your movie because you decided to get political…”

But, George Takei is not buying it. Takei’s recent Facebook post about Doctor Strange is a response to Cargill’s comments, as he takes issue with the reasoning behind not including Tibetan characters and changing the Ancient One’s race completely.

Marvel already addressed the Tibetan question by setting the action and The Ancient One in Kathmandu, Nepal in the film. It wouldn’t have mattered to the Chinese government by that point whether the character was white or Asian, as it was already in another country. So this is a red herring, and it’s insulting that they expect us to buy their explanation. They cast Tilda because they believe white audiences want to see white faces. Audiences, too, should be aware of how dumb and out of touch the studios think we are.

Takei’s arguing that just because Marvel wanted to avoid casting Tibetan actors and standing by the Ancient One’s origin as a Tibetan, there’s no reason why the Ancient One could not be played by a Nepalese actor. Or a Nepalese actress. Instead, Takei is suggesting that Swinton’s casting had more to do with Hollywood whitewashing than it did with the delicate political situation in China.

Since Takei’s comments on Facebook were posted, many people have taken to Twitter to call out Hollywood’s lack of diversity. Comedian Margaret Cho, writer Ellen Oh, and the organization Nerds of Color, came together to start a campaign about the lack of Asian American communities being represented in mainstream media and society at large using the hashtag #WhiteWashedOut.

Unfortunately for Marvel, it looks like their casting decision is going to end up biting them in the butt. Hopefully, they are able to fix the situation before the movie’s release date.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Reveals How SNL’s ‘Sexism’ Changed Her Life

Few actresses have had a TV career as amazing and graceful to that of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who is now starring in her third TV series, VEEP. 

The fifty-five year-old Seinfeld actress has won every major award for TV acting and hows no plans on slowing down. During an interview with the New York Times, Louis-Dreyfus talked about why her early years on Saturday Night Live were not that successful and why she doesn’t view herself as a leader for other female actresses. She recalls that working on SNL wasn’t the best place for female comedians, saying “I did not come out of SNL as any kind of name. I didn’t do anything particularly great when I was there. I didn’t. It’s fine. But I learned a tremendous amount. It was a very sexist environment. Since I’ve gone back, I can tell you it’s much more of an equal-opportunity environment.”

She continues, “I was on it for three years, and when I left, I made this conscious decision that I would not take any jobs that didn’t seem as if they would be really fun. That’s very simplistic and Pollyannaish sounding, but really, I noted that. I’m not doing this unless I can have a deep sense of happiness while doing it. I’ve applied that, moving forward, and it’s worked. So in that sense, I have SNL to thank.”

Louis-Dreyfus is one of the few actresses who plays a lead role in a series and is above the age of thirty. However, she admits that she doesn’t focus on her age or the lack of diversity for women on TV, explaining “I don’t think of it like that. I’m happy to have a job. Really, I’m not kidding. I’m certainly happy to be playing a woman in a powerful position in politics, even though she’s a buffoon. And I don’t say that apologetically, because think of all the buffoons in politics right now. She’s our buffoon.”

In addition, she points out that she doesn’t see herself as a leader. “I don’t think of myself as a pioneer. I’m not sure that I am. Opportunity for women in television has increased. It’s because the landscape has widened. More women got on the playing field. But opportunity for women in film has not increased. I just think it’s that simple. By the way, I’m certain that there’s more much more in television that can be done. And I’m trying to do it. But I’ve certainly seen it change in my lifetime.”

Ultimately, it sounds like Louis-Dreyfus is committed to acting and improving conditions for all women in the film industry one TV show at a time.

She’s the only actress to win an Emmy Award in both the comedy and drama genres for the same role.

Tituss Burgess Reveals How He Landed His ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Role

Actor Tituss Burgess reveals an amazing story and inspiring acting advice.

Actor Tituss Burgess became a household name nearly over night after Netflix released Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on their streaming platform. But, did you know Tituss Burgess appeared on shows like 30 Rock, Blue Bloods, and Royal Pains? Apparently, Tituss Burgess was just a struggling actor trying to make it in the streets of New York City. But, in a recent interview with Vulture, Burgess reveals how his role on 30 Rock led to his current series and how Alec Baldwin might have had something to do with it.

“I did four episodes on 30 Rock but we never had any kind of conversations about what else I was doing or where I lived, or anything. All of these correlations between Titus and Tituss, we never talked about, so it’s really uncanny how perfect it fit. I tell this story all the time. And I’ll tell it to you. And it is the absolute truth. The last day of 30 Rock, I was living on 47th Street between Eighth and Ninth and my last Broadway show had just closed. It was Guys and Dolls. Alec Baldwin turned to the team on my last day of shooting and said, ‘You guys gotta give this guy a spinoff.’ I had been in pursuit of a purpose, of the next dream to chase. And I wanted to put a pause on theater, so I went home and got on my knees and I prayed, ‘Please, if the universe will allow, if you will grant me, or can find it in your vastness, a series or a job working with the caliber of talent I’ve been working with and types of writers, I will do right by it and I will honor it and I will do it to the best of my abilities.’ That was four years before. Cut to getting this job, and on the first day they called and they said, ‘Tituss, you need to report to 48th and Tenth and someone will walk you to your trailer.’ The trailer for my show was right outside my old apartment where I prayed for this job. I literally could have opened the door and walked into my trailer. I looked around, and I started crying.”

When Tituss Burgess was asked if Baldwin’s comment helped him land his Kimmy Schmidt role he replied, “I don’t even know if he remembers that. He probably said something to everybody after we wrapped, but he was so kind to me when we filmed, he was wonderful. I learned so much from that man because I was in a lot of scenes with him. Particularly how to work on network television, where there is compression of time. You have 21, 22 minutes to tell a story. So if you’ve got a joke where there’s two parts, you better try and forge it into one or it will get cut. He showed me how to be more precise and get to the comedic point in a more clever way. I just had great schooling with him and, of course, Tina and all the writers who gave me notes. But he taught me how to save what you’ve come up with. Great advice.”

I think it just goes to show you that hard work, dedication and a little bit of faith can change your life for the better. It apparently worked for Tituss Burgess who just finished working on season 2 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

El Chapo TV Series Coming Soon, #CARTEL

History channel is making an El Chapo TV series.

El Chapo made international headlines in the recent past for his capture, escape and legendary re-capture as well as a shocking interview with actor Sean Penn and actress Kate del Castillo. Now, the History channel is looking to recreate the story of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

According to reports, the cable network is currently working on #CARTEL, a scripted TV series that will explore the global drug wars as told through the eyes of El Chapo, one of the world’s most powerful drug lords. The show will be written and produced by former Narcos show runner Chris Brancato.

The drama, which is in development with a script order, will follow El Chapo’s rise to power and how drug cartels use social media to maintain their image, recruit new members and threaten rivals. El Chapo, who became Mexico’s top drug kingpin and is considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world, has fan followings with relationships in the entertainment and music industry (like Sean Penn) that go beyond the Mexican border and into the U.S.

History channel describes #Cartel as “a story of power, money, sex and the human cost of the drug wars like none ever seen on television.”

‘The Walking Dead’s T-Dog Has Just Released a Hip Hop Album

The Walking Dead’s IronE Singleton a.k.a T-Dawg, just released a hip hop album.

You may know IronE Singleton from his recurring role on The Walking Dead and The Blind Side but did you know he just released a hip hop album? Titled “Hip-Hopcrisy” Singleton talks about “society at large and the ills that we face. His ambition is to encourage, inspire and motivate us all towards positive change for the betterment of humanity.”

Track number 2 is called “We Are The Walking Dead” and it “examines humanity through the personified point of view of zombies.” The song was inspired by his role on The Walking Dead. 

It is surprising to note that Carol (Melissa McBride) was supposed to have been killed off in the episode “Killer Within” on The Walking Dead, but the producers eventually decided to kill T-Dog instead. According to Wetpaint, in an interview with The Walker Stalkers podcast, Greg Nicotero, TWD’s producer, revealed the change made to the show’s original script.“In the original draft of [‘Killer Within’] script, Melissa McBride’scharacter [Carol] was supposed to die. Iron-E [T-Dog] wasn’t going to die, it was going to be Carol.”

It was probably really tough to break the news to Iron-E Singleton, who had become a fan-favorite on the show.

Netflix ‘Sense8’ To Film in Chicago

Netflix’s Sense 8 will film in Chicago this June

Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama by the creators of The Matrix is headed to Chicago next month to film part of their second season, according to the Chicago Film Commission. Filming will start this June 4th through 15th. Atmosphere Casting posted on Monday that they will be handling the background actors for the Netflix series.

Sense8 season2 will focus on eight characters from across the world, all connected by a very violent vision. Each episode — shot in the UK, Seoul, Mumbai, Nairobi, Berlin, Mexico City, San Francisco and Chicago — will follow the characters’ separate stories, even as one entity tries to bring the octet together and another tries to kill them.

GLAAD Demands Disney Add LGBT Characters into Star Wars

GLAAD calls for Disney to incorporate LGBT characters into the next Star Wars movie.

The GLAAD organization is calling for Disney to include a non-heterosexual character into the next Star Wars movie. In a new report, the organization has suggested the initiative as “part of [Disney’s] studio responsibility index, an annual survey of depictions of LGBT characters in major studio releases.”

According to a recent report, Disney was one of two film studios (the other being Paramount) that did not include a single gay or lesbian character in any of their movies released in 2015. And “as sci-fi projects have the special opportunity to create unique worlds whose advanced societies can serve as a commentary on our own, the most obvious place where Disney could include LGBT characters is in the upcoming eighth Star Wars film,” the organization argues.

But, GLAAD wants more than just a token character. GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis told Variety that, “It is not enough for LGBT characters to simply be present; rather, these characters must be crafted thoughtfully and better reflect the full diversity of the LGBT community,” she stated. “Leaving LGBT people out of the picture — or including them only as a punchline — keeps old prejudices alive and creates an unsafe environment, not only here in America, but around the world where most audiences see these depictions.”

Andrew Farrell, Autistic Kid, Mocked by 50 Cent in Viral Video

50 Cent has some major legal issues after making fun of a 19-year-old man who turned out to be autistic.

According to TMZ, the family is considering filing a lawsuit against 50 cent.

According to reports. Andrew Farrell was working as a janitor at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport when 50 Cent started making fun of him on video. 50 Cent would then accuse him of being high at work and post the video on Twitter.

Ken Kramer, Andrew’s stepdad, told TMZ that Andrew suffered from autism and Asperger’s syndrome. He also has a hearing condition which forces him to wear a hearing aid. Ken says Andrew has never smoked or used drugs in his life and suffers from social anxiety. Andrew’s family is considering hiring a lawyer unless, “$1 million to Andrew’s GoFundMe page, and makes a face-to-face apology.”

Too bad 50 cent is broke.

Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur has died at 69.

The Marin County Sheriff’s office reported Tuesday morning that Afeni Shakur Davis, the mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, died Monday night at 69. The Sheriff’s Coroners Office will lead the investigation to determine the “exact cause and manner of Afeni Shakur’s death.”

Shakur Davis died at her home after the Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a possible cardiac arrest at her home.

Afeni was an executive producer on All Eyez on Me, an upcoming biographical drama about her son’s life starring Demetrius Shipp Jr, which filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

Melissa McCarthy reveals the studio ignored her complaints about Ghostbusters’ movie trailer.

Following the news that the Ghostbusters trailer is one of the most disliked videos in YouTube history, one of the stars of the Sony reboot acknowledged that the early promo clips were “very confusing.”

As a guest on The Johnjay & Rich Show, Melissa McCarthy said: “It’s a reboot, not a remake. I know it’s weird that they say [in the trailer] “30 years ago,” but in this movie it’s like the first one didn’t happen.” Basically, arguing that the movie’s trailer is a female interpretation to the original Ghostbusters movie.

Melissa McCarthy continues: “It’s a great story but told totally differently. It’s the same thing of four unlikely heroes, it’s in New York city, ghosts are taking over. It’s the same classic story, but it’s not a ’30 years later,’ ” she said.

McCarthy even said she raised the issue to the movie’s producers and studio executives but, they ignored her. “Believe me the question was asked,” she said. “I think that it’s very confusing. But then everyone said we don’t care what you think.”

‘Hamilton’ Breaks Records with 16 Tony Award Nominations

Hamilton makes history with 16 nominations.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway show has earned 16 Tony award nominations. The last Broadway show to set the record for the most nominations was the Broadway musicals The Producers and Billy Elliot with 15 nominations. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hamilton was nominated for best musical, score, book, direction, choreography and a several acting nominations.

This is a spit in the face of the 2016 Academy Awards, which didn’t nominate a non-white actor for a single acting category. From The Hollywood Reporter:

The nominations across the eight performance categories for plays and musicals include several actors of color, a number of them frontrunners. But that’s more about the unplanned convergence of productions with strong roles for non-Caucasian actors this year, not a well-timed rebuke to the Academy. Despite an anomalous downward bump last season, Broadway has a relatively respectable track record for diversity — on its stages, if not so much behind the scenes. In fact, you need to go back to 2008 to find a year in which one or more performers of color didn’t take home Tonys for acting.

‘Frozen’ fans petition for Princess Elsa to have a female love interest in the next movie.

Fans have taken to the Internet to petition for Disney to give Frozen’s lead character Princess Elsa a female love interest in the movie’s sequel. The hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend went viral on monday as many Twitter users argued for a gay character in the movie.

But, some people were not too supportive of creating a LGBTQ Disney movie character.

If Disney decided to create a lesbian character for Frozen, it would not be the first time a Disney character was gay. However, it would be the first time an animated movie directed towards children would feature a gay character.

Disney is currently working on a sequel to ‘Frozen’

MTV ‘Catfish’ Participant Dies at 23

MTV’s ‘Catfish’ participant, Ashley Sawyer, dies at 23.

MTV says Ashley Sawyer, who appeared in a 2013 episode of the network’s reality show Catfish has died at the young age of 23. MTV News reports Sawyer died over the weekend in Alabama. The cause of her death is not known.

Catfish centers around online scams. The episode that featured Sawyer shows her meeting a longtime digital boyfriend, Micahel Fortunato, in person. The pair used fake images of themselves striking up a conversation in an online chatroom.

MTV News reports that Fortunato died at 26 from a pulmonary embolism one month after the episode aired. In a recent follow-up episode, MTV says Sawyer struggled with addiction.

Nev Schulman took to twitter to share his condolences.
