Background Actor Says Disney Is ‘Browning Up’ White Extras for ‘Aladdin’

Disney is getting bashed after bosses reportedly admitted to making up their white background extras to look brown during filming of Aladdin.

In preparation of the highly anticipated live-action production, which stars Will Smith as the Genie, is currently being filmed by Guy Ritchie at Longcross studios in Surrey.

But despite production taking place a short drive away from London, a city with over one million Asian people, Disney said its as forced to hire white actors to work as background extras.

The studio said positions for stunt men, dancers and camel handlers could not be filled for the movie. That said, bosses said the live-action version of Aladdin is the most diversely cast production in Disney’s history.

The studio said that 400 of the 500 background actors were Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean and Asian, reported the Sunday Times.

A modern version of the highly-anticipated 1992 movie is set in the fictional Arabian state of Agrabah.

Actress Naomi Scott is playing Jasmine and Egyptian-born Canadian Mean Massoud is playing the lead role of Aladdin, following an extensive talent search.

However, despite Disney’s statement, a man who worked on the movie has claimed there were more white actors used than the studio explained to the Sunday Times.

Background actor Kaushal Odedra, 32, was a stand in for a lead star in the film and told the Times he saw up 20 ‘very fair skinned’ actors waiting to have their skin darkened in make up tents.

He also claimed Caucasian extras were even being browned up for crowd shots.

‘Disney are sending out a message that your skin colour, your identity, your life experiences amount to nothing that can be powered on and washed off’, he told the Times.

Actor Kal Penn called out Disney for not hiring enough Asian actors. “I love @Disney so much. But when a PR person says they decided to put 100 people in Brownface in 2018 because not enough of us are qualified, that’s bs, someone just didn’t want to spend the $ to do it right. Let’s all expect more & do better this year.”

Netflix’s ‘American Vandal’ Season 2 Open Casting Call

0

Casting directors are now casting talent to appear in the second season of the hit Netflix show American Vandal.

The TV series will shoot in Portland, Oregon. Cast Iron Studios, which helps series and films cast actors, said Tuesday it’s seeking those between the ages of 14 and 22 “to portray high-school students” in the series.

The Jan. 6 casting call is by appointment only (those interested in landing work can visit Cast Iron’s website to reserve their slot).

The series is co-produced by Funny Or Die, CBS Television Studios, and 3 Arts Entertainment. It’s set to start shooting in the Portland area in mid-February.

“There are a number of small, speaking roles that producers are hoping to hire locally,” said Casting Director Eryn Goodman. “The show truly needs all types, shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and abilities. They want to reflect a real high-school look: braces, pimples, and all.”

Goodman stated that, while acting experience is helpful, it’s not a requirement. Instead, “interested parties would do well to watch Season One, to get an idea of the tone and humor of the show.”

An open casting call will take place this Saturday, January 6, 2018 in Portland, and is by appointment only. Those interested in auditioning should follow the link below to reserve their time slot.

Cast Iron Studios is committed to diverse, inclusive casting. There is no charge to create a basic profile in the company’s database, and no fees will be charged to talent who take part in the show. For more information, visit castironstudios.com.

Daisy Ridley Reveals She No Longer Wants to Play Rey After ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

0

Daisy Ridley revealed that she no longer wants to play Rey after Episode 9. In a new interview about Star Wars: The Last Jedi with Rolling Stone, Daisy said she flat-out doesn’t want to play the leading character after J.J. Abrams directs Episode IX.

“No,” she says flatly. “For me, I didn’t really know what I was signing on to. I hadn’t read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, ‘Awesome.’ Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now.”

But, um, doesn’t that sort of sound like a yes? “No,” she says again, smiling a little. “No, no, no. I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it’s three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out.”

In the same interview, J.J. Abrams also explained he felt that Episode IX was the end of the Skywalker saga that has driven the nine-film story. “I do see it that way,” he says. “But the future is in flux.”

So maybe the future of Star Wars is not over? Ridley says she sees the story ending at Episode IX because the trilogy will come to an end, just like Return of the Jedi ended the original trilogy. But Ridley also said if 30 years down the road she was asked to come back, she would. And while she’s only tracked for these three films, it seems incredibly possible that Disney could throw her enough money to make her sign up for another feature film.

The Last Jedi opens December 15. Episode IX starts filming next year, with a targeted release date of December 20, 2019.

Actresses Claim ‘CSI’ Casting Associate Manipulated Them Into Undressing

0

On Wednesday, veteran casting associate Andy Henry reportedly manipulated actresses into disrobing during private, paid auditioning sessions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this behavior got Henry fired from his CSI casting job and his own firm in 2008, as it was revealed he was using this strategy on aspiring actresses seeking costarring roles in the show.

Sadly, some women fell for Andy’s “coaching technique”, as they felt compelled to please him since he was the key to landing a speaking role, The Hollywood Reporter claims.

Since the firing was not publicly disclosed, Henry continued to work on several major motion pictures including Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, The Descendants, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Elysium.

Five women have made the decision to come forward to explain their unpleasant experiences with Andy. These women became connected thanks to the #MeToo campaign. Sadly, the women feel they were preyed upon.

In addition, during these “coaching technique” sessions, Henry used the same scene from a 2006 episode of the procedural, where a character struggles with a rare genetic disorder that causes excess hair growth. On meeting the casting professional at Reel Pros, actress Jenny Kern recalled:

“His line was, ‘It’s a really challenging scene and I can tell you can handle it, but it definitely requires more work than what we do here. Do you have any time to stay afterward to push a little harder with [the material]?’ I was really flattered.”

Andy had Jenny perform the scene several times before suggesting that, in order to achieve “more vulnerability,” she should take her bra off. According to Kern, the casting associated became upset with the situation and “incrementally asked [her] to take [her] clothes off.” Jenny eventually complied so that she could get the meeting over with.

After manipulating Jenny into her underwear, Andy began to improvise a scene that was highly inappropriate. She continued:

“He started saying things, improvising as this detective character: ‘I can see your tits,’ ‘I can see you shave your pussy.’ He did it until I finally cried.”

He ended the meeting by thanking Jenny for her acting performance.

Tessa Gross had another run-in with Andy while at Culver City’s acting center ITA. She claimed:

“He prefaced by saying, as he’d playact frustration, running his hands through his hair, ‘This is going to seem super-crazy, but don’t think it’s super-weird.’ That he works with actresses all the time. His thing was that [the performance] would feel more authentic if you can feel your nipples against your clothes. I thought, ‘I need to get out of here.’ But there’s also this sick actor part of me that thought, ‘I need to get out of here as friends.'”

Tessa chose to leave the meeting, as she was pregnant and not eager to show her baby bump to a stranger. Gross later emailed ITA about Andy’s behavior and later received the following reply.

“Dear God! Just tell me that no one asked you to disrobe!!!”

Andy’s advances left an impact on his victims as many began to doubt their future as an actress following the upsetting situations. Catherine Black, who rebuffed Henry’s request at AIA Actor’s Studio, said:

“It really planted a seed in my head, that maybe I wasn’t good enough. Of, what did I do wrong? It made me feel ashamed.”

Through AIA, Andy reportedly met another victim, who he allegedly groped. Mandy June Turpin claims Henry touched her shoulders and brest during their sessions.

“I thought, ‘Thank God, somebody said something.’ You’re afraid to speak up. You’re someone without credits. And he went on to work again in the business anyway.”

Andy also reportedly preyed on an intern who worked at the casting firm where he worked, named Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer. Reportedly, Henry offered to give aspiring star Jacqueline Mueller private acting advice back in 2008. Using the same CSI scene, the casting expert advised the intern to take off her bra, a request she followed. When Andy told her to unzip her sweater, Mueller realized the situation had become one of misconduct.

Jacqueline remembered:

“Then he asked me to unzip my sweater. If I’d unzipped it, I would’ve been topless. I felt disgusted and bamboozled.”

In order to “loosen” her up, Andy then offered Mueller a glass of whiskey. She quipped:

“I don’t remember him reaching out to the men in the office to ‘help’ them.”

Ugh. Andy has since responded to the allegations with the following statement:

“Nine years ago, I tried what I thought was a coaching technique, but which I learned very quickly was foolish and foolhardy. It was brought to light almost immediately, and as you were correctly informed, I was terminated from my employment in 2008 as a result.

I was then, and remain to this day, profoundly sorry about these incidents. I took responsibility right away for using nudity as a technique to explore the vulnerability portrayed in a scene, without being cognizant of the potential damage to the human being in the room. I was not aware of the allegations of fondling until now, and do not believe or recall that such a thing happened. I never meant to make anyone feel pressured into doing anything, nor did I ever consciously intend to hurt anyone.

My job was gone, my standing in the entertainment community was greatly lowered, and my career options were severely curtailed. I lost my marriage and declared bankruptcy as a result. I was punished for my actions, but I have spent the last nine years rebuilding myself into a person who could never do such a thoughtless and careless thing again. I have formally converted to Judaism, I have dedicated my life to the service of God and to trying to make some repair in this world. And I have striven to live and work every day as honorably and as honestly as possible. I am, again, inexpressibly sorry for the pain that these incidents caused.”

Norman Reedus: No One Wanted Me To Do ‘The Walking Dead’

0

The Walking Dead is still one of the most watched TV shows in recent history and it probably wouldn’t have been a success without actor Norman Reedus. But in a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Reedus revealed that no one wanted the actor to do the show.

“It was like one of those scripts you get and everybody’s like ‘don’t do it.’ Yeah, it was a stretch, I mean it was out there ya know, but I saw a guy looking for his family, that was the real story, and it paid off.”

When asked by Kimmel who told him to turn down the part, Reedus replied, “everybody.” Thankfully, he didn’t listen and fall into peer pressure.

Reedus previously revealed how he fought early scripts that had Daryl being a jerk on the show, and it is ultimately this turn that has given him the lone wolf character fans love today, but how much longer will Reedus remain the show. For example, producers already announced that they are considering moving past Rick Grimes as the show’s lead.

Actor Dylan O’Brien Reveals How His On-Set Accident Changed His Life

Actor Dylan O’Brien is making a successful return to acting after a suffering a significant injury on the set of The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. In an interview with Moviefone, O’Brien talked about his on-set injury and working with the Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Keaton in the movie American Assassin.

O’Brien reveals how he chooses his movies. He explains, “For me, the decision always comes down to if I want to dive into this role if I want to be the guy to tell this story, if I feel that the script and story are strong, if I feel like the filmmaker is strong. It’s everything but, really.”

O’Brien has played characters for an extended period. He says he enjoys it, “Getting to play a character over a lengthy period of time is always a pleasure, especially if you like the character. You grow attached to them in a certain way. I’ve felt that way with Stiles, the Teen Wolf character I play — and my Maze Runner character, too. It gets a little sentimental when you bid them farewell. It’s like, ‘Oh, wow — this is my last day on set as this guy.’”

That said, his injury on set of The Maze Runner: The Death Cure put his acting career on hold for months. He explains, “I shied away from the whole thing, at first. When you go through something like that, it was a really scary thing that I was lucky to come away from. Everything inside of me, for months, was telling me to run away from stuff.”

O’Brien says his accident was a teaching moment for the film industry. “Ultimately, it was a good thing because it motivated everybody to do it in the right way. When you’re dealing with things like this on a set — and I’ll always preach this for as long as I live after going through what I went through — but safety is paramount. I think sometimes that gets lost in the fold a little bit. People can get lost in that little world you’re in on a set, and you’re making believe and it’s all fake. But people can still get hurt — and you’re dealing with really serious things. I go about it all differently now. I’m very meticulous with the stunts that I am asked to do, and I feel like I don’t have to do anything I’m not comfortable with doing. It’s a good thing for people to be aware of, and have a really safe shoot, which is what we did.”

O’Brien praised working with Michael Keaton. He reveals, “I think why younger actors do that a lot is, for me, is it’s fascinating to see a guy who you’ve watched forever, and the amount of performances you’ve seen of his that you think are brilliant, it’s then really brilliant to see how they go about achieving that. You want to see what their process is like. It could be any version of it. Whenever I’ve gotten to work with guys who are pretty prominent, prolific actors, I always observe how they are. Keaton is funny. He’s been great for so many decades and he’s not a psychopath. You can achieve that greatness by being smart and having a good work ethic and can still be a good human. That’s the biggest thing I took away from watching him.”
