‘The Talk,’ ‘Jennifer Hudson Show’ Set to Resume During Dual Strikes

Daytime Talk Shows Resume Production Amid Ongoing Labor Strikes.

Amidst the ongoing dual labor strikes led by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA, several daytime talk shows follow Drew Barrymore’s lead in resuming production.

CBS’ popular panel show, “The Talk,” along with two syndicated talkers, “The Jennifer Hudson Show” and “Sherri,” hosted by Sherri Shepherd, are gearing up for their season premieres in the coming weeks. The strikes, which have impacted numerous TV and film productions over the past five months, revolve around demands for improved pay and residuals, greater transparency in streaming data, and safeguards against artificial intelligence implementation, among other critical issues raised by the unions in negotiations with studios and streamers.

Drew Barrymore’s decision, announced on September 10, to commence taping episodes for the upcoming season of her eponymous daytime show without WGA writers sparked controversy among striking writers. In an Instagram post, she stated, “I am… choosing to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it, but this is bigger than just me.” She further emphasized compliance with not discussing or promoting any struck film or television content.

The show faced picketing by writers in New York, with two audience members reportedly asked to leave the taping after showing support for the strike by wearing pins.

Sources indicate that “The Talk” is set to resume taping, with a planned premiere on September 18. CBS has refrained from providing a comment. The show, aligned with the Writers Guild’s minimum basic agreement, halted production at the onset of the writers’ strike in May.

Jennifer Hudson’s show, syndicated by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, is gearing up for its second season, also scheduled to debut on September 18. Promotion for the upcoming season has featured clips from the first season. Last season, the show enlisted WGA writers, and according to the guild’s website, it is a signatory to the union’s minimum basic agreement. Warner Bros. has yet to respond to THR’s request for comment.

“Sherri,” entering its second season and distributed by Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury, follows the model of fellow daytime shows like “Live With Kelly and Ryan” and “Tamron Hall,” which continue to operate without WGA writers. ABC’s “The View” has also remained on the air despite usually employing a few WGA members, leading to pickets by guild members.

Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Hudson, Sherri Shepherd, and the panelists of “The Talk” (Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell, and Sheryl Underwood) are all by SAG-AFTRA regulations for hosting their respective shows. These shows fall under a separate contract, known as the Network Code, distinct from the one under which actors are currently striking.

As of now, “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” syndicated by NBCUniversal, has not yet returned to production. The show is in preproduction at its new home in New York as it prepares for the 2023-24 season debut, for which NBCU has yet to announce a specific date.

Lorne Michaels, Dwayne Johnson Among Deals Suspended at NBCUniversal Studio Group

NBCUniversal Studio Group Suspends Michaels’ Broadway Video and Johnson’s Seven Bucks Amid Ongoing Labor Dispute.

Amid an extended labor standoff between the writers’ guild and significant players in Hollywood, NBCUniversal’s Universal Studio Group has opted to suspend operations with key production entities, including Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks, alongside several undisclosed films and television ventures.

Insiders familiar with the matter informed The Hollywood Reporter that Universal Studio Group, comprising divisions like Universal Television, Universal Content Productions, and Universal Pictures, took the initiative on Monday to approach their remaining creative partners, inquiring about their willingness to contribute non-writing services. Those partners with active scripted or unscripted projects who assented to continue their work remain unaffected—however, those who had completed production or were unwilling to provide non-writing services faced suspension.

This move follows Universal Studio Group’s decision, alongside other major studios, to temporarily halt a significant portion of their ongoing contracts early in the strike.

Additionally, it has been observed that non-writing producers within Universal Studio Group are among those affected by this latest round of suspensions. The agreements with Michaels (known for productions like Saturday Night Live and numerous scripted TV shows) and Johnson (renowned for his extensive work in features and films) are two of Universal’s most high-profile deals.

Recently, under Channing Dungey’s leadership, Warner Bros. Television Group suspended its top-tier producers, including Greg Berlanti, J.J. Abrams, Bill Lawrence, and Mindy Kaling, after they continued to deliver non-writing services. Multiple sources indicated to THR that other studios, particularly Universal and Paramount Global, were anticipated to take similar steps.

According to sources, Seth MacFarlane remains actively involved with Universal Content Productions, focusing on the revival of Ted for Peacock. Similarly, the prolific Dick Wolf is still engaged, developing unscripted projects. However, producers like Tina Fey, Sam Esmail, and Mike Schur have already faced suspension within Universal Studio Group.

Representatives for Universal Studio Group chose not to comment on the matter.

Since Warner suspended its leading producers, the industry has been alert for further developments. Notably, Lionsgate’s deals are currently inactive. While Sony TV arrested all writers on its roster back in May, they did commit to extending weekly deals for producing services (with the studio still maintaining active non-writing contracts). Studios have not resorted to outright termination of contracts through force majeure clauses, as multiple studios and streaming sources informed THR last week that their deal rosters had already been streamlined before the strike.

Toronto: Netflix Nabs Anna Kendrick’s Directorial Debut ‘Woman of the Hour’

Toronto: Netflix Secures Rights to Anna Kendrick’s Directorial Debut ‘Woman of the Hour’.

Following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Netflix has acquired the rights to Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, ‘Woman of the Hour,’ for approximately $11 million, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Netflix has secured both the U.S. and international distribution rights for this gripping true-life thriller, initially presented at TIFF a year ago by Anna Kendrick and AGC Studio’s CEO, Stuart Ford, responsible for production and financing.

CAA Media Finance managed the U.S. sales for the project, and it garnered considerable interest from various parties due to its compelling story, based on Ian MacDonald’s The Black List script. In addition to the U.S. rights, Netflix has acquired the film for multiple international territories, including France, Italy, Benelux, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and more.

Anna Kendrick plays a multifaceted role in ‘Woman of the Hour,’ serving as director, producer, and lead actress. She portrays Cheryl Bradshaw, a contestant on the popular 1970s TV matchmaking show, ‘The Dating Game.’ What starts as a seemingly enchanting date takes a chilling turn when the bachelor, Rodney Alcala, reveals his true identity as a psychopathic serial killer amidst a murder spree.

The film was filmed in Vancouver, with Kendrick playing Bradshaw, a struggling actor who makes the fateful decision to appear on the TV show, only to cross paths with Alcala. ‘Woman of the Hour’ arrived in Toronto without a pre-existing U.S. distribution agreement, making its debut screening at the Princess of Wales Theatre, a renowned venue for acquiring new titles.

Notably, Kendrick’s directorial debut, penned by Ian MacAllister McDonald, needed to adhere to a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, allowing for early negotiations with a streaming giant in the Toronto film sales market. Netflix’s acquisition of ‘Woman of the Hour’ marks the first significant film purchase during this year’s TIFF.

The cast of ‘Woman of the Hour’ also includes Tony Hale, Daniel Zovatto, and Nicolette Robinson, with producer credits shared among Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, and others.

As of September 11, 8 p.m., the deal between Netflix and the film’s rights has been officially confirmed.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Draws 16M Views on Disney+

Disney+ Celebrates Success as ‘The Little Mermaid’ Makes a Splash with 16 Million Views.

Disney+ users have eagerly embraced ‘The Little Mermaid,’ according to an announcement by the streaming service on Monday.

In just five days since its release on Disney+ on September 6th, ‘The Little Mermaid,’ a live-action reinterpretation of the beloved 1989 Oscar-winning animated classic, has garnered an impressive 16 million views worldwide, as reported by the platform. To calculate these “views,” Disney uses a formula that divides the total viewing time of a title by its duration, which is the same method employed to gauge early streaming figures for the debut episode of the Star Wars series, ‘Ahsoka.’ (Netflix also relies on a similar formula for its weekly top 10 lists.)

This viewership figure signifies a significant level of interest in director Rob Marshall’s film, which premiered in theaters on May 26th and amassed over $560 million at the global box office. For comparison, ‘Hocus Pocus 2,’ released directly to Disney+ in October of the previous year, garnered more than 26 million views in its first three days, solely within the United States, according to Nielsen streaming data.

This announcement coincides with ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA efforts to advocate for residuals or revenue sharing based on viewership statistics from streaming platforms.

‘The Little Mermaid’ boasts an impressive cast featuring Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, and Awkwafina. The film’s first full trailer, unveiled in March, generated a staggering 108 million global views within its initial 24 hours, spanning broadcast television and digital platforms. This marked a remarkable achievement, making it the most-watched Disney live-action title since 2019’s ‘The Lion King.’

In her review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Lovia Gyarkye praised Halle Bailey’s performance in the lead role, stating that she “doesn’t disappoint.” Gyarkye also noted, “Like other live-action remakes, ‘The Little Mermaid’ presents a well-packaged story infused with themes of representation. It provides enough entertainment for an evening’s viewing but may not evoke much more than a sense of déjà vu.”

Step 1: Understand the Anime Industry

Studying the art of voice acting in anime entails delving into a comprehensive analysis of the myriad techniques employed by seasoned and highly proficient voice actors who have achieved great acclaim in the industry. By meticulously scrutinizing the various methodologies and strategies deployed by these professionals, one can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the intricacies involved in breathing life into the characters portrayed in this unique art form.

Moreover, embarking on this journey of voice acting exploration necessitates a thorough exploration of the vast array of voice acting styles and approaches that exist within the anime realm. Whether it is the nuanced delivery of emotions, the seamless transition between different character personas, or the ability to accurately convey complex dialogues, understanding the diverse range of stylistic choices employed by voice actors can greatly enhance one’s own repertoire and lend a more authentic touch to their own performances.

In addition, immersing oneself in the captivating world of anime with a specific focus on voice acting performances serves as a valuable educational tool. By actively and attentively observing the work of seasoned voice actors, one can discern the subtle nuances, inflections, and tonal variations they employ to bring their characters to life. Watching anime through the lens of voice acting can offer profound insights into the creative decisions that these professionals make, further facilitating the acquisition of invaluable knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the field.

Step 2: Develop Your Voice Acting Skills

In order to improve your vocal abilities, it is highly recommended that you incorporate vocal exercises into your daily practice routine. The first step is to warm up your voice before each practice session. This can be done by gently humming, doing lip trills, or singing scales to get your vocal cords ready for the upcoming exercises. By gradually increasing the intensity and range of these warm-up exercises, you can effectively prepare your voice for a productive practice session.

Next, it is crucial to dedicate a significant amount of time to work on specific aspects of your voice, such as vocal range, projection, and articulation. By focusing on these areas, you can enhance your overall vocal control and abilities. To expand your vocal range, you can practice singing both low and high notes, gradually pushing your comfort zone and reaching for higher or lower pitches. Additionally, working on projection involves developing the ability to produce a strong, clear sound that can be heard even in larger spaces. By practicing exercises that require you to project your voice, such as singing with a full, resonant tone, you can strengthen your vocal projection. Lastly, articulation exercises are designed to improve the clarity and precision of your vocal delivery. By practicing tongue twisters and enunciating words and phrases with precision, you can enhance the overall diction and clarity of your singing.

Finally, as a means of expanding your vocal abilities and exploring the vast realm of vocal performance, it is highly beneficial to experiment with different accents and character voices. By attempting to mimic various accents, you can enhance your ability to manipulate different vocal tones, pitch, and pronunciation. This can also be a fun and creative way to explore different vocal styles, while also providing you with the opportunity to enhance your versatility as a singer. Additionally, experimenting with character voices can help you develop a wide range of vocal techniques, as you challenge yourself to adopt and master different personas through your voice. By incorporating these aspects into your practice sessions, you can continuously grow as a vocalist and expand your vocal repertoire.

Step 3: Build a Professional Portfolio

Before you start creating your voice acting demo reel, the first step is to meticulously choose your best voice acting performances. This critical selection process involves reviewing your body of work and identifying the pieces that truly showcase your talent and acting prowess. These should be performances where you’ve delivered exceptional characterizations, emotions, or unique vocal qualities. Your goal is to leave a lasting impression on anyone who listens to your demo reel, so carefully curate a collection of performances that highlight your strengths and versatility as a voice actor.

Once you’ve identified your standout voice acting performances, the next step is to transform them into a professional demo reel. This involves not only the art of selection but also the craft of editing and compilation. Your demo reel should be a seamless, engaging showcase of your abilities. You’ll need to edit the audio recordings to remove any imperfections, such as background noise or mistakes. Then, these refined clips must be skillfully compiled to create a cohesive and captivating presentation. The goal here is to ensure that your demo reel flows smoothly, leaving no room for distractions and highlighting your best work in the most professional manner.

One of the fundamental purposes of a voice acting demo reel is to display your versatility and range as an actor. To achieve this, you should include a diverse array of performances that reveal the full spectrum of your abilities. This means incorporating different character types, ages, accents, and genres into your reel. By showcasing your capacity to tackle a wide variety of roles and vocal styles, you demonstrate to potential clients and casting directors that you’re a versatile voice actor capable of bringing their scripts and characters to life. Your demo reel should be a testament to your adaptability and skill, ensuring that it resonates with a broad range of potential projects and opportunities.

Step 4: Network in the Anime Industry

Start your journey into the world of anime voice acting by connecting with others who share your passion. Engaging with fellow anime enthusiasts and aspiring voice actors is a fantastic way to build a supportive community. You can join online forums, social media groups, or local meetups where discussions revolve around anime and voice acting. These connections not only foster your love for the genre but also provide opportunities to learn, grow, and collaborate with like-minded individuals who appreciate the art of voice acting in anime.

As you embark on your anime voice acting adventure, don’t hesitate to seek guidance and feedback from experienced professionals in the field. These veterans have valuable insights and can offer advice that helps you improve your skills. Additionally, they might provide opportunities for you to gain practical experience, such as auditioning for roles in anime projects. Whether it’s refining your technique or finding your first role, their expertise can be a guiding light on your journey to becoming a successful anime voice actor.

Sharing your voice acting work with others is a crucial step in your anime voice acting endeavors. It’s an opportunity to showcase your talent and get noticed. You can upload your voice demos, performances, or character impersonations on platforms like social media, YouTube, or specialized voice acting websites. Moreover, collaborating with fellow voice actors, directors, or writers on anime projects can be an exciting way to gain experience and create something remarkable. By sharing your work and collaborating, you not only improve your skills but also contribute to the vibrant world of anime voice acting.

Step 5: Audition for Anime Voice Acting Roles

When preparing for an audition, take the time to deeply analyze the character you’re hoping to portray. Dive into their backstory, personality, and the traits that make them unique. Understanding your character’s motivations, quirks, and emotions is essential. This knowledge allows you to deliver a more authentic and convincing performance. It’s like stepping into the character’s shoes and breathing life into them, making your voice acting truly resonate with the audience.

Voice acting is all about conveying emotions and expressions through your voice. To master this, practice delivering lines with the right emotions and expressions that match the character and the scene. Whether it’s excitement, sadness, anger, or joy, your voice should mirror the feelings of the character. You can practice by taking script lines and experimenting with different emotional tones until you find the perfect fit. This practice sharpens your skills and ensures that your voice acting is both engaging and emotionally compelling.

Recording your audition tapes is a valuable step in your voice acting journey. After recording, take the time to review your performance critically. Listen to your delivery, pay attention to nuances, and identify areas for improvement. Are your expressions clear and on point? Is your tone consistent with the character’s emotions? Self-evaluation helps you refine your voice acting skills. You can also seek feedback from peers or mentors to gain valuable insights and further enhance your performances. Recording and reviewing become essential tools for continuous growth as a voice actor.

Remember You can always check for the latest voiceover jobs here at Project Casting!

Step 6: Never Stop Learning and Improving

As a voice actor, it’s essential to continually challenge yourself by taking on diverse roles and genres. This not only showcases your versatility but also helps you grow as an artist. Don’t limit yourself to just one type of character or genre; explore different personas and styles. By doing so, you expand your range and become a more adaptable voice actor, ready to tackle any role that comes your way.

Improvement in voice acting often comes from constructive feedback. Don’t hesitate to seek input from experienced professionals and peers in the industry. They can provide valuable insights into your performances, highlighting areas where you excel and areas that may need improvement. Walt Disney Pictures Visual Effects Staff Take Steps Towards Unionization

0

The visual effects teams at Walt Disney Studios have embarked on a significant journey towards unionization, formally submitting a request to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to hold an election for union representation.

A substantial supermajority, comprising over 80% of the in-house VFX crew members at Walt Disney Pictures, have shown solidarity by signing authorization cards, indicating their strong desire to be part of a union.

This pivotal move marks the second instance where VFX professionals have united to advocate for equal safeguards and privileges like their peers. In a recent development earlier this month, VFX teams at Marvel Studios decided to unionize, with the process set to commence on August 21. The voting ballots are slated for submission by September 11, and the official vote tally will transpire on September 12.

Mark Patch, an IATSE VFX organizer, conveyed, “Today, the brave Visual Effects workforce at Walt Disney Pictures overcame the inhibitions and reticence that have hindered our community from expressing its concerns in the workplace for an extensive period. The remarkable supermajority of these teams, striving to discontinue the status quo of VFX practices, serves as a resounding testament that our initiative transcends any single studio or corporation. This is a collective effort by VFX professionals across the sector, leveraging our available resources to elevate our standing and pave a more promising trajectory for our field.”

Matthew D. Loeb, the International President of IATSE, added, “The dedication exhibited by these VFX practitioners is not only laudable but also trailblazing. Their united stance against the existing norms marks a revolutionary shift during this crucial juncture in our industry’s history. The chorus of voices demanding transformation is unparalleled, underscoring that our united front is not centered around any particular entity but rather the establishment of a standard characterized by honor, consideration, and equity for all.”

The individuals in the process of unionization have a pivotal role in shaping the VFX present across the studio’s illustrious repertoire, encompassing iconic titles such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” and “The Lion King.”

Since the inception of the VFX field during the production of the initial “Star Wars” films in the 1970s and ’80s, VFX staff have remained outside the realm of unionization. As part of their endeavor, these prospective union members are advocating for equitable compensation for their labor, comprehensive healthcare coverage, retirement benefits, and, fundamentally, the same array of rights and protections enjoyed by their unionized colleagues whom IATSE currently represents.

These demands resonate with the growing chorus of calls for enhancements throughout the VFX industry. They are fortified by the insights unveiled in IATSE’s 2022 VFX Worker Rate and Conditions Survey, publicly released in March.

Following the submission on Monday, a labor board election could kick off within two to three weeks. If most workers affirm the decision to unionize during this election, the studio would be obligated to initiate sincere negotiations for a collective agreement encompassing these workers as a cohesive unit.
