Why Prop Design and what will I be doing as an Art Trainee for Prop Design?

    • You’ll be given the opportunity to learn about how your role fits into the overall Animation production pipeline and how to create under production-paced deadlines
ART TRAINEE PROGRAM TIMELINE:
Portfolio Submission Deadline: Open throughout 2021*
As Netflix Animation’s shows begin production at various times throughout the year, we’ll be offering multiple Trainee opportunities throughout 2021. That being the case, Trainee start dates will be determined by show need as opposed to a predetermined calendar.
    • Finalists Notified according to the production need
    • Program Duration: 4 months
      • Exact dates to be determined – Please refer to the FAQ’s
WHAT NETFLIX IS LOOKING FOR:

      • Great art comes in many forms! If you need some ideas for how to present your prop designs, you could include rough sketches, cleaned up linework, full turnarounds, and fully colored designs.
      • Both 2D (hand-drawn, Photoshop, etc.) or CG are acceptable, but please keep in mind the majority of our productions currently underway are Traditional (2D).
      • Don’t forget to include your password if your site is password protected.
    • Don’t have any prop designs yet? Here’s an art prompt to help build your portfolio (optional):
      • Items found in a child’s school lunch; a sandwich (whatever you choose between two slices of bread), a piece of fruit (apple, orange, etc.), a treat (cupcake, cookie, etc.) and a container (lunch bag, bento box, etc.) but we are open to other submitted work too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
  • Q: When will be the deadline for submission on the Art Trainee Program?
    • A: We recognize that not having an end date for our submission period may be a little different from other programs offered in the Animation community. We’re hoping to provide as many opportunities to Art Trainees as possible beginning this Fall and into 2021. We will be evaluating portfolios throughout 2021. As we strive to always be better, we will re-evaluate this methodology as the year draws to a close. When we decide on a deadline, we will communicate to applicants well in advance of those changes taking effect.
  • Q: When is the Start Date?
    • A: Start Dates will vary depending on the needs of our productions. We will continue to send emails updating you on the status of your application throughout the year into 2021.
  • Q: What style should I be submitting for my application (2D or CG)?
    • A: Given that Netflix Animation has no set studio look/style, we are open to all from stylistic and cartoony to more realistic. This is your opportunity to showcase your skills and unique style. Both 2D (hand drawn, Photoshop, etc.) or for CG are acceptable, but please keep in mind the majority of our productions currently underway are Traditional Animation (2D).
  • Q: Is this a paid position?
    • A: Yes, this is a full-time, paid position.
  • Q: Is the Art Prompt a test?
    • A: This is not a test as any artwork submitted will not be used to cast candidates for a particular role within the studio, but rather it is a way for candidates to show their creativity. We wanted to offer guidelines and context on how to submit artwork via an art prompt, in part democratizing the information for self-taught artists who may not have access to this information. Please know that the creation of unique artwork is optional and is not required.
  • Q: Will I receive feedback on my submission?
    • A: Due to the high volume of applicants, we are unable to provide feedback at this time. However, you will be notified if you will not be moving forward in a timely manner.
  • Q: What are we assessing in portfolios?
    • A: The technical skills we are looking for in your art consist of: perspective, shape use, appealing silhouette, cohesive shape language, clean line work, and strong draftsmanship.
  • Q: Will I need to relocate to Los Angeles if selected? Are relocation/housing expenses covered?
    • A: Given the current state around COVID-19, all candidates will be asked to work remotely. Should this situation change, you will need to relocate to the Los Angeles area and be subject to Visa and US Immigration requirements and restrictions. Relocation/housing expenses are not covered at this time.
  • Q: If I get rejected, can I reapply with an updated portfolio?
    • A: Yes, please do! We love seeing new art 🙂
  • Q: Will there more than just Prop Design offered in this Art Trainee program?
    • At this time, we will only offer Prop Design Trainee opportunities.
  • Q: I’ve got a great idea for a film/series…can I include my pitch materials with my application?
    • A: The Netflix Emerging Animation Talent program is dedicated to helping those with limited production experience to improve their skills. We totally understand and appreciate you may want to use this opportunity to submit your great ideas for a series or feature. Unfortunately, we cannot and do not accept or review any unsolicited materials. Unsolicited materials will be deleted.

Here are the nine next movies to film in California.

(UPDATE: August 17, 2020) The Coronavirus is creating a frustrating atmosphere for filmmakers across the country. Hollywood is attempting to resume production amid new safety procedures. Now, nine new features are planning to film in California.

The California Film Commission has announced its latest round of movies that the state selected to receive film tax credits from the state’s incentives program. The four studio and five independent titles include Russo brothers action-thriller Gray Man, Jessica Chastain drama Losing Clementine, Octavia Spencer sci-fi movie Invasion, and a currently untitled Jordan Peele movie.

Other productions include Phil Lord and Chris Miller horror movie Sweetwater, which centers around the first African American basketball players in the NBA.

Gray Man is a major production starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The Netflix project is a huge win for California, which lost many major productions to Georgia and the United Kingdom, who both provide more lucrative film tax credits. The movie is expected to bring $102 million in wages and other qualified expenditures.

Nine films are set to generate $284 million in state expenditures. They are expected to hire 1,340 crew, 342 cast members, and 14,397 background actors and stand-ins over the course of 374 filming days in California.

Independent projects include Losing Clementine, Nightfall, and Sweetwater and were in the under $10 million-and-under qualified spending category, which saves funds specifically for lower-budget indie films.

“After announcing two relocating TV series earlier this month, our new tax credit program continues to get off to a great start with today’s list of film projects,” said California film commission executive director Colleen Bell. “Production activity is ramping back up in California amid COVID-19 with safety remaining a top priority, and Program 3.0 is attracting the kind of big-budget films that will generate a considerable amount of jobs and in-state spending.”

Here’s the full list of movies filming in California this Fall 2020

  1. Faster, Cheaper, Better
  2. Gray Man
  3. Invasion
  4. Losing Clementine
  5. Nightfall
  6. Sweetwater
  7. Untitled DOR
  8. Untitled Jimmy Warden Project
  9. Untitled Jordan Peele Project
Here are the 12 movies set to film in California this summer 2020.

The California Film Commission announced on Monday they have 12 feature films that were selected to receive film tax credits in the state with California’s film incentives program, which starts on July 1st.

According to reports, four independent movies and eight feature films were selected. Among those selected include Universal Pictures’ sequel ‘Half Baked 2’, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Bay’s ‘Little America, Fox’s ‘Lady of the House’, and Amazon’s Untitled Project starring Cate Blanchett and written by Aaron Sorkin. Other projects include a transgender teen drama ‘Moonshadow’ and Asian family drama series ‘Ashes to Oceans’.

The Hollywood Reporter reports over 50 projects applied for film tax credits from March 9th to March 13th. Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic delayed the announcement several months but, the news illustrates Hollywood is ready to get back to work.

The California Film Commission has set aside $40.2 million in film tax credit for the 12 films. Together, a 12 movies are expected to generate $225 million in qualified spendings in California. In addition, the projects should hire approximately 1,745 crew, 543 cast members, and 14,668 background actors and stand-ins. They will also generate significant postproduction jobs for California talents.

“Program 2.0 has accomplished precisely what it was designed to do, from creating high-wage jobs to encouraging more out-of-zone production,” said California Film Commission executive director Colleen Bell. “As the industry begins to rebound from COVID-19, the launch of Program 3.0 will help continue to ensure that California provides an unparalleled value.”

“As a project with many trans and other gender non-confirming creative team members, cast and crew, it was essential for Moonshadow production to be based in a progressive state,” EP Jude Harris said Monday. “California’s tax credit program is making it possible for us to generate jobs and production spending here at home while working in a supportive environment.”

Over the last five years, the new program has given film tax credits to 243 movies and projects and generated an estimated $11 billion in overall spending, including $4 billion in qualified wages to below-the-line employees and $3.7 billion to state companies.

Tyler Perry Will Pay The College Tuition for Rayshard Brooks’ Children

In an essay published in People magazine, Tyler Perry wrote his thoughts on racial injustice and police brutality in America.

“I’m exhausted from all the hate and the division, the vitriol that I see online from one to another,” the filmmaker writes. “I’m exhausted from seeing these kinds of senseless murders play out over and over again with nothing changing in our society.”

Tyler Perry wrote on various topics ranging from George Floyd, a Black man who was killed after a white Minnesota police officer kneeled on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 setons. He also discussed getting stopped and frisked in New Orleans and Atlanta.

“The level of racism and brutality that George Floyd faced is something that we as black people know all too well,” he wrote. “When I saw that video, I had so many raw, guttural emotions. I felt for him and his family. I felt for all of us as black people. I felt for my 5-year-old son.”

Tyler Perry is considering how to explain racism to his 5-year-old son. He says he wants to inspire hope.

“Looking at his young face, I often ask myself how to broach this conversation: How will I explain that even though Mr. Rogers once said, ‘Look for the helpers,’ sometimes those very helpers will judge his skin before they recognize his humanity,” he wrote.

“I know that as his father, a black man in America, it is my duty to prepare him for the harsh reality that awaits him outside of the watchful eyes of his loving parents. It will be a hard, heartbreaking conversation, but one that I must have and will have soon.”

Tyler Perry offers to pay for all funeral expenses for the family of Rayshard Brooks, according to the family’s attorney. Tyler Perry will also pay college tuition for Rayshard Brooks’ chidden.

“Support like that, people who are actually in the community that love the community that wants healing, and families like this should never have to go through something like this. It’s a step forward, and we want to thank him,” the Brooks family attorney Chris Stewart said.

An Atlanta police officer killed Brooks on Friday after officers responded to a call about a man sleeping in a car at a Wendy’s restaurant.

Brook’s death sparked protests across Atlanta, Georgia.

Coronavirus: Chicago Film Office To Resume Issuing Film Permits

0

The Chicago Film Office announced this week they would start issuing film permits.

City officials announced Chicago’s health metrics are on track for a transition from Phase 2 (Stay at Home) to Phase 3 (Cautiously Reopen) in early June. As a result, some of the city’s services will increase operations.  As a result, the Chicago Film Office will start issuing film permits starting June 15, 2020, for productions with crews with ten or fewer people. “We are working with the Illinois Film Office to develop these guidelines further for when larger film production can resume safely. At this time, some support services from the City of Chicago may be limited.”

“We are working to create specific guidance so that we can provide more details as to what services we will be able to provide either online or in-person in Phase 3,” the Chicago film office website says. “This will include details such as how to engage in healthy interactions between workers and residents, how to maintain safe working spaces and conditions, and how to design and monitor workplace operations to create flexibility and further safety for employees and residents.”

In relevant news, Georgia Film Officials report more TV shows and movies could film in the Peach State as the state is reportedly recovering faster than others.

Lee Thomas is the deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. She says more TV shows and film projects could come to Georgia as the Peach State recovers from the Coronavirus faster than other states.

Thomas provided an update on Georgia’s film industry on June 2 at a virtual luncheon near the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber.

Thomas reportedly discussed how California and New York are severely impacted by the Coronavirus, which allows Georgia to beat their competitors. “There were projects that had stages they had holds on starting in late summer, but the projects in those stages beforehand haven’t finished their work yet. It’s going to be interesting how these sound stages can accommodate all the projects coming in, not only the projects coming back but also the new ones scheduled.

“We’ll also get even more projects coming from other states because Georgia is reopening faster than other states. … We also have all these new streaming services’ projects.”

Courtney Cox Says She Doesn’t Remember Working on ‘Friends’

Courtney Cox says she forgets even working on ‘Friends’.

The actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, where she explained she does not remember much about playing the character, Monica Geller.

“I don’t remember even being on the show, I have such a bad memory,” she laughed, adding, “I remember obviously loving everybody there and having fun and I remember certain times of my life. I was there, but I don’t remember episodes.”

Cox said she started binge-watching the show during the Coronavirus shutdown. At the end of the episode, Cox asked viewers to donate to Meals On Wheels. She also talked about filming on ‘Friends’ reunion special, featuring Cox and co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Coronavirus: Production Shuts Down ‘The Batman’ Indefinitely

The Batman‘ production shuts down indefinitely amid the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Director Matt Reeves has confirmed that the production of ‘The Batman’, which features Robert Pattinson in the lead role, has been paused for the foreseeable future.

The movie stopped production on March 14 after finishing nearly seven weeks of filming in London.  Warner Bros said it was taking a “two-week hiatus” due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, Reeves has confirmed that production has been paused with no specific time frame, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“Yes, we have shut down till it is safe for us all to resume,” he said in a tweet. The film is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on June 25, 2021.

Coronavirus Related Hollywood Shutdown

The Hollywood shutdown has stopped only two weeks ago, but the financial impact is having a long term impact on the industry.

The Coronavirus has shut down production on many major projects including ‘The Matrix 4’ and ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’. Consequently, many teams are leaving big blockbusters as they wait and see what will happen next.

According to Variety, most studios are letting their talent know that this point they do not expect stalled productions to get started back until mid-May at the earliest. But, May could be too optimistic. The pandemic has not reached its peak and major production hubs such as New York City is experiencing a major lockdown and rise in Coronavirus cases.

Studios are not able to go back to work until local governments lift bans on gatherings of more than 10 people. One source close to Variety believes the first films to start the production will be the ones that are shooting in the United States, versus those filming overseas due to the Coronavirus.

Studios are also focusing on the safety of cast and crew and arranging ways to accommodate their cast and crew that had projects lined up months in advance. For example, Chris Pratt was supposed to work on ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’, what will happen to all other projects that were scheduled to begin production in the summer? The same goes for Hollywood’s biggest actor, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who is now filming in Atlanta for the Netflix series ‘Red Notice’.

Variety reports, actors in supporting roles who have larger roles in other upcoming projects, will most likely drop out, and studio executives are looking at other actors to serve as replacements.

Meanwhile, movies that have not started production including Disney’s ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ are on an indefinite hiatus. Marvel’s ‘Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness’ has not pushed back their production schedule as filming is set to start shooting in June.

‘Mission: Impossible 7’ was about to start filming in Venice, Italy. But filming was pushed back after Italy was tragically hurt by the Coronavirus. Filming locations for the new movie were set to take place across Europe, making it difficult for production to move forward.

‘The Matrix 4’ finished filming in San Francisco and was set to begin filming in Berlin. ‘The Batman’ finished filming seven weeks of production in London, and ‘Red Notice’ worked for two months in Atlanta. Variety reports that it is still possible for these movies to hit theaters but, there is also a strong possibility the movie will get pushed back.

How to Overcome Self-Doubt as an Actor

How to boost your confidence and overcome self-doubt as an actor

Recently on /r/Acting, one aspiring actor asked how could they improve their acting ability and overcome the feeling of self-doubt. “I’ve recently been recording myself acting out parts and every time I’ve played it back to myself, I’ve felt like I’m not good enough, or that I don’t have a special ‘something’ that would set me apart from the rest.”

Fellow actors responded and gave really good advice to overcome that feeling of being inexperienced.

Getting more experience and acting in front of others. “Yeah, just take a class. Of course you’re not as good as people who have been doing it for years and working with top-level coaches. That’s like being interested in tennis without ever playing another human being and watching Serena Williams and feeling bad about your own ability. You just need practice.”

One other actor responded by saying, “train get experience and like with anything the more you do it confidence will come. In the meantime, you can boost your own confidence which is a foundation of acting IMO. Have a daily mantra you write or say in your head. Mine is this: I am confident, I am talented, I can…it works your mind and body works off of what you feed it. Negative self-talk = poor or lack of self-confidence Build yourself up in YOU HAVE TO”
