Why Casting Directors Care About Social Media Followers (Explained)

Casting directors reveal social media followers may have more of an impact than acting talent.

During TheWrap’s annual media and technology conference TheGrill, casting directors reveal that the lack of presence across social media can have an impact on whether they land the job or not.

Jason Newman, a manager, and Producer at Untitled Entertainment, said not everyone considers social media during the casting process. However, he says, it is becoming increasingly more critical and can make the difference between choosing between actors.

“When a director is making a movie — producers studio execs, everyone involved — they rely on the casting directors bringing in the best actors they rep for those roles; the social media part is an extension,” Newman told the audience at TheGrill.

“If I have two actors up for the same role and it’s between actor A and B, and actor B has 2 million followers across all social media platforms, and actor A has 20 million, but they’re neck-in-neck in their acting ability, or maybe actor B is even a little bit better, but man we know if we convert one and a half to two percent of their social media following to buyers, I’m hiring that person,” Newman said. “I want to have a bigger ROI on my investment, so of course, I’m doing that, so yes, social media is playing a massive component in all of this.”

Social media followers play such a significant role that Newman said in about 50% of all casting decisions, social media followers had a massive part in deciding on who gets cast.

“I would say over half the casting jobs, especially at the networks and the streaming services, the question asked is ‘What’s their Instagram handle and what are their social numbers,’” Newman said. “They want to know that now. It’s a question we get asked regularly.”

Why Michael B. Jordan Nearly Quit Acting Forever

Before starred in Black Pantherthe actor was extremely close to being done with acting.

Following his role on the hit HBO series The Wire, Jordan moved to Los Angeles to work on his acting career. “I remember when I first came to L.A., and me and my mom, we went to all these agencies trying to get representation and they passed on me — WME passed on me, CAA passed on me, Gersh, all these guys f– passed on me,” Jordan told Vanity Fair in a . He was done with Los Angeles because Los Angeles was done with him, until he ran into Andre Royo, who played “Bubbles” on The Wire, :

“He was stressed out,” recounts Royo. “He was like, ‘Yo, I’m not working enough, sh*t is crazy, I think I’m going to go back to New York.’ And he was really on some ‘boo-hoo’ sh*t. And I was like, ‘Yo dog, are you kidding me right now? You in your early 20s and you’re around motherf*ckers trying to feed families who ain’t working. Snap out of it.’”

Jordan would later land bigger and bigger roles. That said, he explains that he is still learning the ins and outs of the film industry. For example, he only made $2 million for Black Panther with residuals. It’s a “rookie” mistake Jordan does not plan on making again.  “Moving forward it’s a totally different story,” he said. “This is the defining moment in a lot of different areas for me that’s gonna set up my next 5 to 10. That’s why I’m so locked in right now, because if it was ever a time to get distracted or, like, drop the ball, this is not it.”

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Kaitlin Olson Shares Tips for Aspiring Actors

Kaitlin Olson from the hit FX series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia shares amazing tips for aspiring actors.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has reached its thirteenth season. It is arguably one of the most successful TV comedy series of all time. Star Kaitlin Olson has remained a key part of the show playing “Sweet Dee” Reynolds, the aspiring actress with no acting talents. In an interview with IndieWire, Olson spoke about the importance of being self-confident with comedy and the importance of getting along with the cast and crew.

When asked about what could be tough about working with another actor in a comedy, Olson explains when actors are not comfortable with themselves can be tough.

Olson explains I think people who are trying too hard, sometimes I get that that’s nerves when you’re auditioning. But that is, unfortunately, a little off-putting. Because you just feel like, ‘Oh, that’s going to be a lot to handle.’ People who are comfortable in their own skin typically don’t have as much of an ego.”

Olson added, “I remember Sofia [Black-D’Elia] came in and was very casual and calm, said ‘hi,’ and just sort of started acting. That’s really what you want in an audition. It’s a hard thing with comedy. It’s a very fine line, people overdoing it and turning into cartoon characters. You want to have a really heightened version of yourself, but not go into cartoon-land.”

One thing that has helped It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia succeed as one of the longest-running live-action comedy TV series is the comes try between the cast members. Olson explains that it isn’t uncommon saying,  “I guess people do that in movies a lot, cast their friends over and over and have different groups, and you just know that you’re going to vibe well together.”
