How to Make an AMAZING Self-Tape

In today’s acting industry, self-tapes are increasingly crucial for actors. This guide provides actors with valuable insights on self-taped auditions, covering essential equipment, wardrobe choices, and expert advice from casting directors and acting coaches. By following these tips, actors can optimize their self-tapes and increase their chances of success.

What is a Self-Tape?

A self-tape is a pre-recorded video audition that actors submit to casting directors or creative teams. It is a substitute for in-person auditions, allowing actors to film select portions of the script or sides and later edit and send the footage. Some find self-tapes stressful due to the planning and technical requirements, while others appreciate freedom. Self-tapes are commonly used for TV, film, and theater auditions, with slight variations in emphasis depending on the medium.

When to Submit a Self-Tape?

Typically, casting directors request self-tapes after reviewing an actor’s demo reel, headshot, and resume. You usually receive instructions, sides, and a deadline as part of the self-tape request. Although open calls occasionally allow anyone to submit a self-tape, most submissions are by invitation only.

Examples of Self-Tapes:

You can refer to real-life examples, such as our Audition Insider series, to gain insights into effective self-tapes. Casting directors provide valuable feedback, emphasizing the importance of broader framing to showcase an actor’s physicality and the significance of a reader who enhances the scene without distraction. Additionally, watching recorded auditions of famous actors can give you an understanding of the level of performance that casting directors expect.

What are Casting Directors Looking for in a Self-Tape?

Casting directors prioritize a self-tape that looks and sounds good, with clear audio and well-lit visuals. However, beyond technical aspects, there are crucial elements that make a self-tape stand out:

  1. Believability: Captivating self-tapes are those in which actors bring the character to life, creating a genuine and compelling portrayal. Strive for authenticity rather than relying on props or elaborate costuming to make an impression.
  2. Strong Choices: Making bold acting choices during a self-taped audition demonstrates intelligence and preparation. Even if a strong choice veers slightly off the intended direction, it showcases your acting capabilities, making adjustments and redirection worthwhile.
  3. Comprehension: Understanding the concept and style of the project is vital. Different directors have distinct tones and preferences; being aware of these nuances allows you to tailor your audition accordingly.

Essential Equipment for Self-Tapes:

To create a high-quality self-tape, you need the following equipment:

  1. Camera: A cell phone camera, preferably with an external lens attachment, or a DSLR camera like the Canon EOS Rebel T7i.
  2. Tripod and Rig: Attach your phone or camera to a stable tripod. Various options, such as the UBeesize Phone Tripod, Eocean iPhone Tripod, or Neewer 64″ Tripod, are available. Some tripods come with rigs, but you can purchase a separate rig like the Aoonar ll078 Universal Smartphone Adapter or Ulanzi Smartphone Video Rig.
  3. Lights: Proper lighting is crucial for a professional-looking self-tape. Consider using a ring light from brands like Neewer, Kaiess, or Rotolight. Alternatively, use two light sources, a key light and a fill light. Options include LimoStudio, Neewer 160 LED Video Light, or Fovitec StudioPRO 600 LED Panel.
  4. Microphone: Ensure high-quality sound by using an external microphone. Recommended options include Rode VideoMic, Shure MV88, shotgun, and Lavalier microphones.

Selecting the Best Self-Tape Backdrop:

Choose a solid, neutral-colored backdrop, such as white, gray, or blue. Avoid patterned wallpapers or distracting objects. Simple options include the Neewer Collapsible Backdrop or hanging a bed sheet, yoga mat, or curtain as a solid background.

Wardrobe Choices for Self-Tapes:

Opt for form-fitting tops and solid colors. Jewel tones like emerald green, purple, and burgundy work well, and collared tops or V-necks are flattering on camera. Avoid red, white, or black, as they can cause issues with the camera.

Filming Techniques for Self-Tapes:

Follow these tips to capture a compelling self-tape:

  1. Framing: Maintain a medium close-up frame from the chest to slightly above the head. Position your reader close to the camera to establish the correct eyeliner. Keep the camera at eye level.
  2. Movement: Minimize excessive movement and gestures. Maintain a stable shot to focus the viewer’s attention on your performance.
  3. Reader Positioning: Position the reader close to the camera, almost straddling the tripod, to ensure effective eyeliner.
  4. Camera Height: Place the camera at eye level or slightly above to capture a flattering angle. Avoid positioning it too low, which can create unflattering shots.

Should I Slate in a Self-Tape?

Only slate if requested explicitly by the casting director. Otherwise, omit the slate from your self-tape. When slating, carefully follow the instructions, including the required shot types (full-body, tight close-ups, or profiles) and the information to include (name, age, role, agency).

Editing a Self-Tape:

For editing self-tapes, iMovie is a user-friendly and cost-effective option. It allows you to cut scenes and add text, music, and transitions. Alternatively, professionals may use Final Cut Pro for advanced editing techniques.

Submitting a Self-Tape:

Follow these guidelines when submitting your self-tape:

  1. Follow Instructions: Carefully read and adhere to the casting director’s submission guidelines, including specific requirements for slating, length, wardrobe, file format, and any other instructions.
  2. Electronic Submission: Submit your self-tape electronically as instructed. Avoid sending hard copies unless explicitly requested.
  3. Early Submissions: Submit your self-tape well before the deadline. Some casting directors review self-tapes as they arrive and may provide feedback or redirections if there’s time before the due date.

By implementing these tips, actors can optimize their self-tapes, ensuring they are technically sound, engaging, and memorable to casting directors. Remember always to follow the specific instructions for each audition and give yourself the best chance of success.

‘The Chosen’ Season 4 Gets Waiver from SAG-AFTRA Strike

As the Hollywood actors’ strike enters its first week, one show will not be affected. Despite A-list stars like Tom Cruise having to leave their sets following the strike announcement on July 13, The Chosen has received special permission to proceed with production.

The popular series, centered around the ministry of Jesus and his disciples, recently agreed with SAG-AFTRA to continue filming season four of this Bible-based drama. Initially, production was halted at the Utah set when the strike began, but series creator Dallas Jenkins applied for and was granted a waiver from the union.

On Sunday, Jenkins took to social media to share the exciting news: “Great news! We just received word from SAG that we have been approved for a waiver. We’ll continue shooting on Monday.”

Coinciding with this announcement, The Chosen celebrated its broadcast premiere on the CW network. The debut episode, a 90-minute introduction featuring Jonathan Roumie as Jesus, attracted an average of 520,000 viewers, according to TV Line. The CW will continue airing episodes weekly until the season three finale on Christmas Eve.

Although now airing on the CW, The Chosen remains independent and is not affiliated with major studios. Jenkins proudly states that the current season is funded entirely by donations. He also assures fans that the show will adhere to SAG’s requests and guidelines, which outline the unique circumstances surrounding the strike.

“Regarding independently produced content not associated with the AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA plans to offer an Interim Agreement, allowing such productions to continue during the strike, provided the producer agrees to comply with SAG-AFTRA’s terms,” explained Jenkins.

Before the CW deal, The Chosen was exclusively available through subscription on the Vid Angel streaming service, BYUtv, Netflix, and Peacock domestically, while distributed globally through other platforms. The show’s cast members, Elizabeth Tabish (Mary Magdalene) and Patel Paras (disciple Matthew) took to their social media accounts to share the news about the waiver.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, The Chosen is currently the sole project being filmed in Utah. This state derives approximately $63.8 million in revenue and creates three thousand jobs from the film industry.

“This is a grave matter that affects thousands, if not millions, of people across the country and around the world,” expressed Fran Drescher, president of the Screen Actors Guild, when announcing the breakdown of negotiations with the studios. “I’m truly shocked by how far apart we are on various issues. It’s disheartening to see them claim poverty while allocating millions to CEOs. It’s disgusting, and they align themselves with the wrong side of history.”

Among the demands put forth by the actors are higher wages and safeguards against the unauthorized use of technology to alter their images or performances without consent or compensation. The striking writers also seek increased pay, protection from AI-generated scripts, and higher streaming residuals, among other provisions.

This marks the first time since 1960 that actors and writers have engaged in simultaneous strikes, highlighting their unified stance on these critical issues.

Actors Reveal Shocking Residual Earnings Amidst SAG-AFTRA Strike

In light of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, working actors are taking to social media to reveal the startling truth about their residual earnings.

While it’s commonly assumed that actors and writers associated with major TV shows and movies are making millions, the reality is far from glamorous. The New Yorker recently highlighted the experiences of actors from Netflix’s hit series Orange Is the New Black, including Alysia Reiner, Beth Dover, Emma Myles, Diane Guerrero, Taryn Manning, Lea DeLaria, and Kimiko Glenn. Despite the show’s success, many were forced to keep their day jobs due to pay disparities and minimal residuals.

Kimiko Glenn’s TikTok video in 2020 shed light on the issue, as she shared that she received a paltry sum of $27.30 in overseas royalties. This revelation sparked a conversation about the pay gaps actors face in streaming content, a contributing factor to the current SAG-AFTRA strike.

Interestingly, SAG-AFTRA is now uniting with the Writer’s Guild of America, marking the first joint strike of both unions in over 40 years, as they collectively fight against unjust residuals and other challenges.

Prominent working actors have come forward to expose the meager amounts they receive from residuals, particularly in response to controversial statements made by Disney CEO Bob Iger. Sean Gunn, known for his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that he received almost no residuals from one of Netflix’s most popular shows, Gilmore Girls. Despite the series’ enduring popularity and consistent streaming, Gunn saw very little revenue.

Brock Powell, a well-known voice actor in animation, video games, and anime, shared that he only earned a mere $58.49 for 48 episodes of a Disney show produced early during the pandemic. Even more astounding, Powell once received a negative payment of one cent for an entire aired episode.

Constance Marie, whose show Switched at Birth continues to be streamed, lamented that although the series remains popular, she only receives two to three cents, or sometimes no compensation, for each episode viewed. This situation poses significant challenges for actors who struggle to make a living, pay rent, and cover insurance solely based on these residuals.

Actress Heather Matarazzo responded to a TikTok user’s inquiry about what the “elite” actors are doing to support struggling Americans. She shared that her residuals amounted to six to nine cents per episode.

Luke Cook, known for his Dollface role, addressed a TikTok critic’s assumption that the striking actors were seeking more wealth. Cook revealed that despite his likeness appearing on a billboard for the show, he received no compensation. The amount he was paid per episode could be better, totaling $7,500 before accounting for taxes, manager fees, and agent commissions. Series regulars earned upwards of $100,000 per episode.

Kamil McFadden, a Disney actor who starred in K.C. Undercover, shared a video revealing that his residuals from appearances amounted to a mere $2.77. Actress Kellee Stewart also disclosed that she once received 13 cents from five separate payments for her work.

Stephen Glickman from Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush revealed that he earned no residuals despite the show being streamed on Netflix for two years before moving to Paramount+.

Desmond Chiam disclosed that he received only fractions of his regular pay for any streaming production, starkly contrasting the $2,000 (triple that amount in residuals) he earned from his work on Bones for network television.

Derek Russo, who portrayed Hunter U-92 in the first episode of Marvel’s Loki on Disney+, made less than $1,000 in residuals, despite the series being one of the streamer’s most-viewed shows.

Jack Bensinger, a cast member of Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out The News, humorously expressed feeling “overpaid” for receiving 19 cents in residuals for seven episodes.

Armen Taylor, a voice actor in popular animation, received a mere 31 cents, which equated to a year’s worth of residuals for four episodes of a made-for-streaming show.

Kylie Sparks, who appeared in one of Netflix’s highly acclaimed series, received no residuals and was paid only a fraction of their guest star quote.

Actor Kris Lofton shared a photo of his SAG-AFTRA direct deposit, revealing a meager $31.86 in residuals for an entire month of work.

These candid revelations by working actors provide a glimpse into the harsh reality that not all performers earn substantial incomes like a select few A-listers. As Glen Powell emphasized in a tweet, many rely on residuals throughout their careers, even before achieving their big break.

SAG-AFTRA May BAN Social Media Influencers Promoting Studios During Strike

Suppose you’re a social media influencer considering promoting a film or TV series for a studio, but you’re not a SAG-AFTRA member. In that case, it’s essential to reconsider your decision.

SAG-AFTRA has implemented regulations for social media influencers during strikes, stating that even if you’re not currently a member but aspire to join the guild, you will be disqualified from membership if you engage in promotional activities for studios and streaming platforms during a strike.

The SAG-AFTRA Strike website explicitly outlines the dos and don’ts for social media influencers, stating, “Any non-member seeking future membership in SAG-AFTRA who performs covered work or services for a struck company during the strike will not be admitted into membership in SAG-AFTRA.”

This ruling has already become a concern for major studios and streaming companies that rely heavily on TikTokers to generate buzz for their blockbuster projects. For instance, the marketing campaign for Insidious: The Red Door, supported by Sony/Blumhouse, achieved an impressive domestic opening of $33 million, thanks partly to the “What’s Behind the Red Prank” orchestrated by the studio’s marketing team. Social media influencers Brent Rivera and Ben Azelart played a crucial role in this stunt by shooting customized prank videos at the Hollywood location, which they then shared with their combined following of 90 million on TikTok and Instagram.

However, it is worth noting that social media influencers invited as guests to Disney’s world premiere of Haunted Mansion on Saturday were already permitted to participate in the event.

According to the SAG-AFTRA website, if an influencer is contracted to promote struck work, they should fulfill their obligations accordingly.

Furthermore, even if a social media influencer is not being compensated for promoting a studio or streaming platform on social media, it is advised against doing so, even as a fan. The Sagaftrastrike.org website states, “Influencers should refrain from posting on social media at struck work, regardless of whether they are posting organically or in a paid capacity.”

This restriction also extends to events like Comic-Con, which attracts numerous social media influencers. They are prohibited from promoting companies involved in the SAG-AFTRA strike, including “appearances, panels, fan meet and greets, etc. involving struck work.”

However, there is a silver lining for social media influencers as they can still pursue and engage in brand-partnership opportunities.

“The influencers may continue to pursue commercial work, including influencer-generated brand deals covered by the SAG-AFTRA Influencer Aandnt and Influencer Waiver,” the website clarifies.

SAG-AFTRA Strike FAQ: How the Rules Apply to Influencers, Journalists, Cosplayers, and More

SAG-AFTRA Strike: FAQs for Influencers, Journalists, Cosplayers, and More.

The SAG-AFTRA strike has caused significant discussion and uncertainty regarding what activities are prohibited and still permissible. SAG-AFTRA has released a comprehensive FAQ covering members, non-members, indie producers, and more to address these concerns. Despite this resource, people still have lingering questions. Here, based on SAG-AFTRA’s guidelines, we provide answers to some of the most common inquiries.

Q: As a film critic, am I allowed to review movies?

A: Absolutely. Film critics are not part of the strike and are under no obligation to cease reviewing movies or TV shows.

Q: Can entertainment journalists cover movies and TV during the strike?

A: Yes. Whether or not they are union members, entertainment journalists are unaffected by the strike. Even broadcast journalists SAG-AFTRA represent are natural, as the strike solely pertains to the TV/Theatrical contract.

Q: Will actors be available for interviews about their projects?

A: It is unlikely. Such interviews would be seen as promoting struck work. However, actors may discuss their reasons for participating in the strike.

Q: What if an actor arranges an interview through their publicist rather than the studio?

A: According to SAG-AFTRA, this is still not permissible. After a few weeks, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) softened their stance on this issue, but SAG-AFTRA still needs to follow suit.

Q: I am not a SAG-AFTRA member. How can I express support for the strike?

A: You can show support by posting on social media or by donating to the Entertainment Community Fund, which aids crew members who are currently unemployed. Additionally, the union encourages non-members to participate in picket lines and rallies. You can find a list of picket locations here.

Q: Should I boycott Netflix?

A: Neither the WGA nor SAG-AFTRA has called for a boycott of Netflix or any other streaming platform. Engaging in a personal boycott will have little impact.

Q: Can SAG-AFTRA members participate in reality shows or game shows?

A: Yes. The union has provided a helpful document outlining the activities that SAG-AFTRA performers are still permitted to engage in. This includes appearances on reality shows, game shows, commercials, video game work, and talk shows.

Q: As an influencer, can I promote movies and TV shows?

Most influencers are not union members and are not bound by strike regulations. However, those who operate under the SAG-AFTRA Influencer Agreement have been asked to refrain from promoting struck work through paid endorsements and organic content. If an influencer already has a contractual obligation to promote something, the union advises them to fulfill the contract terms. They are also free to create content related to any other subject.

Q: Can I engage in cosplay?

A: If you are not a member of SAG-AFTRA, you can freely pursue cosplay (except for future union influencers, as mentioned above). However, if you are a SAG-AFTRA member, ask yourself whether you are promoting struck work while looking in a mirror. If the answer is yes, then it is not permissible.

Q: As an independent producer, can I obtain a waiver to continue my project?

A: SAG-AFTRA refers to this as an “interim agreement.” To qualify, you must agree to adhere to the final terms reached between the AMPTP and the union. Furthermore, you must establish genuine independence from AMPTP-affiliated companies.

Q: What are the consequences of violating the strike rules?

A: If an infraction occurs unintentionally, you will likely receive a gentle reminder not to repeat the action. However, the union possesses the authority to enforce its strike rules, which can result in penalties such as censure, reprimand, fines, suspension, and expulsion. Non-members who engage in struck work will be prohibited from joining the union.

SAG-AFTRA Enforces Strict Rules: No Weapons, Alcohol, or Drugs on Picket Lines

SAG-AFTRA urges members to follow picketing guidelines for safe and legal strike actions.

To ensure a secure and peaceful picketing experience during their ongoing strike, SAG-AFTRA has issued guidelines for its members, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a non-violent and professional approach. To achieve their objectives, the guild has explicitly discouraged the use of weapons, intoxication, or engaging in confrontations. By adhering to these guidelines, members can demonstrate their dedication to the cause while upholding the principles of solidarity and lawful protest.

SAG-AFTRA recognizes the significance of this historic strike in advancing the interests of the entertainment industry. Picketing is a crucial tactic employed to compel studios to negotiate a fair deal. However, the guild emphasizes that strikes are lawful actions, and it is essential to abide by labor laws and policies throughout this support effort.

The picketing guidelines set forth by the guild include the following key points:

Non-violence and Conflict Avoidance:

  • Members must refrain from engaging in violence, threats, or intimidating behavior.
  • Confrontations should be avoided, and a peaceful environment should be maintained.

Prohibition of Weapons:

  • Members are strictly prohibited from carrying weapons or objects that could be perceived as potential weapons, such as sticks, toy guns, or laser pointers.

Professional Conduct:

  • Derogatory language, profanity, and attempts to intimidate others are strictly prohibited.
  • Avoid disrupting traffic, such as requesting drop-offs or pick-ups on curbs.

Sobriety:

  • Alcohol and intoxicating substances should not be used at the picketing site.
  • Participation while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances is strictly prohibited.

Respect for Public Spaces:

  • Facilities’ ingress and egress should not be blocked, and sidewalks should remain clear.
  • Mindful consideration should be given to pedestrians, vehicles, public transportation stops, and intersections.
  • Property damage and littering are strictly prohibited.

Media Interaction:

  • Members must refrain from speaking to the press on behalf of SAG-AFTRA.
  • Any inquiries from the police or managers should be directed to picket captains or designated leadership.
  • Caution should be exercised when responding to questions, as seemingly innocent queries may be designed to provoke a violation of labor law.

Online Presence:

  • Members should assume they are being recorded at all times and exercise caution regarding their social media posts.

Compliance with Laws:

  • All parking and traffic regulations, as well as other laws, must be followed.

Coordination with SAG-AFTRA Staff:

Enjoyment and Unity:

  • Members are encouraged to have fun during the strike by engaging in activities such as moving, walking, dancing with their signs, and starting chants or songs.
  • While the strike is of utmost importance, it is also an opportunity for members to unite and create an enjoyable atmosphere.

Producers Guild Backs SAG-AFTRA and WGA Strike: ‘United in Solidarity

Producers Guild Expresses Solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and WGA in Historic Strike.

In a powerful statement released today, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) declared its unwavering support for the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in their joint strike. According to the PGA, the members of both unions have made a remarkable sacrifice in their quest for significant change within the entertainment industry.

The PGA stands firmly with SAG-AFTRA as its members courageously strike against the studios, companies, and streaming platforms represented by the AMPTP. As the second major union to take this bold step, our industry is at a crucial juncture. The statement conveyed that the united efforts of SAG-AFTRA and the ongoing writers’ strike symbolize an extraordinary commitment from actors and writers aimed at driving meaningful transformation in our field.

Recognizing the importance of fair compensation and essential benefits, including access to healthcare, the PGA believes these concerns are fundamental rights for every individual working in the industry. As a result, the PGA’s statement concluded that we stand in unwavering solidarity with our esteemed colleagues.

The PGA’s expression of support for SAG-AFTRA’s decision to join forces with the writers in their strike follows similar declarations from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the Teamsters, the Directors Guild of America (DGA), and the WGA.

In a separate statement, DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter expressed deep disappointment in the AMPTP’s failure to address SAG-AFTRA’s concerns fairly and reasonably during negotiations. Glatter also proudly affirmed the DGA’s support for actors and writers in their struggle.

The strike, unofficially in effect since Wednesday midnight after failed contract negotiations between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, was officially ratified by the SAG-AFTRA national board on Thursday morning. Guild President Fran Drescher and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland passionately articulated their reasons for the strike during an intense press conference in Los Angeles at noon.

At 12:01 a.m. on Friday, the SAG-AFTRA strike will officially commence, marking Hollywood’s first double strike since 1960.

Halloween Horror Nights is Back with ‘Stranger Things’ Haunted House

Halloween Horror Nights Returns to the Upside Down With ‘Stranger Things Season 4 House.

Halloween Horror Nights is taking Stranger Things fans back into the Upside Down for the 2023 season.

The house marks the return of the Netflix series to the annual Halloween event at Universal Studios parks in around four years, with this year’s home inspired by the fourth season of the Duffer Brothers series. Parkgoers will be transported again to Hawkins, Indiana, where they’ll meet with supernatural villain Vecna amid his effort to obliterate the barrier between the Upside Down and the real world.

In the house, guests, Eleven, Max, Eddie, and more characters from the show will emerge on the front line of Vecna’s deadly attacks. While moving through iconic scenes like the Hawkins Lab, the Creel House, and Vecna’s chilling, blood-red mind lair, guests will confront familiar and terrifying creatures like demo bats and Vecna himself as they race against the clock not only to escape but save humanity from his deadly curse.

This marks the third time in HHN’s history that Stranger Things has been the basis for one of the houses and mazes. The Orlando and Hollywood parks hosted one inspired by the show’s first season in 2018 and 2019, followed by another pulling from plot elements in seasons two and three. Notably, the second house picked up where the first had left off scene-wise, meaning attendees might get a brief sequence referencing season three at the start of the 2023 house.

“From the opening shots of Stranger Things 4, episode one, we knew this was meant to be an experience at Halloween Horror Nights,” said John Murdy, executive producer of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.

“We’re excited for our fans to live Vecna’s curse as we recreate the iconic and terrifying moments from the show,” added Lora Sauls, assistant director of creative development and show direction at Universal Orlando Resort.

The Stranger Things house is the latest IP-based attraction announced in this year’s bi-coastal event. Last month, a Last of Us house was announced for HHN based on the Naughty Dog and Playstation game. HBO’s live-action adaptation, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, received 24 Emmy nominations on Wednesday.

Halloween Horror Nights 2023 begins Sept. 1 at Universal Orlando Resort and Sept. 7 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Paul Dano on How He Created His Character in Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’

Paul Dano Reveals the Process of Creating His Character in Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans.’

In the highly anticipated film, ‘The Fabelmans,’ acclaimed actor Paul Dano takes on the role of Arnold, a character inspired by Steven Spielberg’s father, who played a pivotal role in shaping Spielberg’s career as a storyteller. Dano recently sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss his initial conversation with Spielberg regarding the position and how he immersed himself in character for this critically acclaimed movie.

During their first Zoom meeting, Spielberg revealed the film’s premise to Dano, who was immediately struck by a deep sense of connection. Dano explains, “As soon as he told me what it was about him, I thought, ‘Ah, this sounds right.’ I’m not an actor who thinks they should play every part or even wants to play every part, but this one resonated with me.”

To prepare for his role in ‘The Fabelmans,’ Dano extensively explored Spielberg’s personal life. He had the invaluable opportunity to tap into Spielberg’s insights and gain access to the family’s archives, including eight-millimeter footage and photographs. Dano’s portrayal was not intended to be a mere imitation but rather an embodiment of Arnold’s essence through his character, Burt. He emphasizes, “Mimicry or imitation was not interesting to anyone on this project. It was more about capturing the essence of Arnold and bringing that through Burt. It’s different. And then there’s Paul somewhere in there, whether we like it or not. There’s a reason you’re asked to be there, no matter how different from yourself you want to be or how transformative. There’s some part of your unconscious that’s coming along.”

Armed with an extensive understanding of Arnold’s life, Dano contemplated portraying a character inspired by the father of the film’s director. He describes his approach: “I just tried to build the character for being an engineer. One of the first things I did was draw a stick figure and think, ‘Okay, how do I get to this? What part of Arnold’s past is going to help bring me there? And where is his center of energy?’ Steven didn’t want me to gain weight, but Arnold’s energy center felt very different than mine. Mine is a little higher, and he was a little lower, so how do I move? Things like that. I followed the engineering mindset, but then a big part of the work is very emotional or spiritual or whatever you want.

Paul Dano’s meticulous research and thoughtful approach to his character in ‘The Fabelmans’ demonstrate his dedication to portraying Arnold with authenticity and depth. As audiences eagerly await the release of this highly anticipated film, it’s clear that Dano’s performance will be a highlight, capturing the essence of the man who played such a significant role in shaping Spielberg’s artistic journey.

Harrison Ford on “Being in the Room Where It Happens” and the “First Rule of Acting Club”

In a rare interview held in early 2023, Harrison Ford, known for his reticence towards the press, shared insights into his career and passion for acting. Despite his reputation, Ford opened up about why he continues to operate, shedding light on his mindset and experiences. During the interview, Ford discussed his role in the AppleTV+ series “Shrinking” and his overall approach to the craft.

Ford, renowned for his iconic film roles, including Han Solo and Indiana Jones, acknowledged that actors should not delve into discussing their craft. He humorously called it the “first rule of Acting Club.” However, he expressed his thoughts on the subject, highlighting his enduring enthusiasm for storytelling and transforming words into behavior.

Ford admitted he didn’t learn anything groundbreaking when asked if his participation in a television comedy series provided new insights. However, he emphasized the importance of being present in the creative process, embracing spontaneity, and striving for authenticity. Ford believes that actual growth in acting comes from being in the room where it happens, responding to the circumstances, and finding genuine moments of truth.

Reflecting on his early acting experiences, Ford acknowledged his initial shyness and overwhelming fear when stepping onto the stage. Recalling his trembling knees, visible even from the back of the theater, Ford attributed the anxiety to his unfamiliarity with the territory rather than social pressure. He described how he overcame his fear, eventually finding joy in being onstage and collaborating with fellow artists to weave captivating stories.

Despite acting less frequently than in the past, Ford continues to pursue acting because he feels it allows him to contribute something meaningful. He believes it is the domain where he can utilize his expertise and create compelling narratives. Comparing it to his past skills as a carpenter, which have faded over time, and acknowledging his lack of musical talent, Ford expressed comfort in his ability to translate words on a page into meaningful behavior. He remains passionate about the prospect of storytelling and views it as a service occupation, recognizing the intrinsic human desire to share narratives throughout history.

Ford, who has appeared in over 60 movies, acknowledged that he often embodies a particular type in his roles. However, he relishes the opportunity to deviate from his established persona whenever possible. While exploring different characters may not always result in commercial success, Ford finds personal fulfillment in such endeavors. He reminisced about his desire to wear beards or mustaches in his films, recounting a humorous exchange with former Warner Bros. chairman Bob Daly, who insisted on showcasing Ford’s face. Eventually, Ford successfully negotiated a bearded appearance for his character in “The Fugitive.”

In conclusion, Harrison Ford’s enduring passion for acting and storytelling shines through in his candid interview. Despite his reserved nature, he provided a glimpse into his thoughts on the craft, his personal growth, and his unwavering excitement for the art of creating and sharing stories.

Matt Damon ‘Fell Into a Depression’ While Filming a Movie

0

During a recent interview on “Jake’s Takes,” actor Matt Damon shared a personal experience of struggling with depression while filming a movie that didn’t turn out as he had hoped. Although he didn’t mention the specific film, Damon expressed the emotional toll it took on him, especially considering his commitment and sacrifices for the project.

“Sometimes, without naming any particular movies, you find yourself in a situation where you realize the movie might not live up to your expectations, yet you’re still involved in its production,” Damon revealed. He further explained, “I remember reaching the midpoint of filming, realizing there were still several months ahead, and feeling depressed about the situation and questioning my choices.”

Damon credited his wife for helping him through this challenging period. Reflecting on her support, he said, “She reminded me that we were in this together and should make the most of our time here. I take pride in being a professional actor; part of that is giving everything you have, even when you know the outcome might not be what you desire. She truly helped me maintain a positive attitude.”

While Damon didn’t disclose the specific movie that caused his depression, he has previously been open about working on films that turned out differently from what he expected. One example is the 2016 film “The Great Wall,” directed by Zhang Yimou, which received negative reviews and faced controversy due to its white savior narrative. Damon portrayed a European mercenary who joins forces with imperial Chinese soldiers to combat an alien threat. Despite its $150 million budget, the film struggled to surpass $50 million at the U.S. box office.

Regarding his experience working on “The Great Wall,” Damon stated during a 2021 interview on the “WTF” podcast, “I realized this is how disasters happen. The movie didn’t come together. It didn’t work as a cohesive whole.”

Damon said, “Being a professional actor means recognizing when you’re in a less-than-ideal project and giving your all. It’s a disheartening experience.

In his upcoming film, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Damon takes on the role of Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project. The highly anticipated atomic bomb epic is set to hit theaters on July 21, distributed by Universal Pictures.
