With the domestic earnings reaching $351.4 million and the overseas tally standing at an equally impressive $423.1 million, the film’s worldwide gross has soared to an incredible $774.5 million. This feat was achieved in 12 days since its midweek release in various overseas regions.

The success of Barbie has surpassed expectations, fueling speculations that the film might become the first Hollywood movie directed solely by a woman to reach the $1 billion milestone. This would beat the record previously held by Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, which grossed $822 million (not adjusted for inflation). Notably, it would be the second film in 2023 to join the billion-dollar club, following Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.34 billion).

Critics who predicted a sharp decline in Barbie’s second weekend were proven wrong, as the movie only saw a 43 percent drop in North America and even less overseas, at 32 percent.

The film’s success has extended even to China, where Barbie generated $25 million in box office revenue by Sunday, despite a modest $8.2 million opening. The unexpected surge in China’s interest has raised hopes for a successful exit in Japan next month.

Among all markets, the U.K. stands as the top performer with $61.6 million in earnings, surpassing the first ten days of the final Harry Potter film. In Brazil, Barbie has already become Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing film with an impressive $33.5 million.

Barbie’s regional success has also been significant, as it now ranks as Warner Bros.’ second-biggest movie of all time after Joker. Surpassing substantial titles such as the final Harry Potter film, Batman v. Superman, and Aquaman, the film has also enjoyed a steady 22 percent drop in Europe.

Interestingly, the simultaneous success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has contributed to what is now called the “Barbenheimer effect,” providing a boost to the summer box office. Oppenheimer, from Universal Pictures, experienced an impressive second weekend, dropping only 44 percent in North America and earning $46.2 million, becoming the largest second weekend for an R-rated film, surpassing Deadpool 2’s record of $43.5 million. With a domestic total of $174.6 million and a foreign haul of $226.3 million, Oppenheimer has reached $400.4 million worldwide, ranking as Nolan’s sixth-biggest film.

In addition, Oppenheimer has become Nolan’s most prominent film ever in 28 markets and his most successful non-superhero title in 39 markets.

Actors Strike Causes Sony to Postpone Release Dates of ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter

Sony Pictures has significantly changed its movie release schedule, affecting two highly anticipated films due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike. 

The live-action Marvel movie “Kraven the Hunter,” featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the ruthless hunter and Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis, will be released on Labor Day weekend in 2024 instead of its original October 2023 date. The animated trilogy finale “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” previously slated for March 2024, has been postponed indefinitely until the strike is resolved.

The decision to delay “Kraven the Hunter” was primarily driven by the need to give Aaron Taylor-Johnson and the rest of the cast, including Oscar winners Ariana DeBose and Russell Crowe, sufficient time to promote the film. In light of the strike, actors have chosen not to participate in promotional activities for major studio projects.

As for “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the film faced delays as no voice lines had been recorded for the sequel, “Across the Spider-Verse.” Consequently, the production of the animated movie remains suspended until further notice, making it impossible to set a new release date.

Sony has a vested interest in the success of “Beyond the Spider-Verse” as its predecessor, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” received widespread acclaim and became the studio’s highest-grossing animated film, with a global box office revenue of $677 million. The positioning of “Beyond the Spider-Verse” on the 2024 or 2025 release schedule is highly anticipated by moviegoers eager to see how the trilogy’s cliffhanger will be resolved.

With a global haul of $400.4 million, including $174.6 million domestically and $226.3 million internationally, ‘Oppenheimer’ ranks as one of Nolan’s top-grossing films, ahead of ‘Tenet’ and ‘Batman Begins.’

Moreover, ‘Oppenheimer’ has been a boon for Imax, as it became the second-fastest film to reach $80 million in global Imax ticket sales. Due to its success, the film’s run has been extended through the weekend of Aug. 11-13, providing audiences with more opportunities to experience the masterpiece.

In contrast, ‘Haunted Mansion’ failed to meet expectations, debuting with a disappointing $24.2 million. The live-action family film, directed by Justin Simien, took on the challenge of transforming Disneyland’s iconic attraction into a supernatural horror-comedy. Unfortunately, it faced tough competition from Barbie and suffered from mediocre reviews, leading to a lackluster performance.

Disney remains hopeful that the movie’s good audience exit scores on PostTrak and a B+ CinemaScore will help it gain momentum and longevity, similar to Pixar’s ‘Elemental,’ which enjoyed an enviable multiple after a slow start. However, both ‘Haunted Mansion’ and ‘Elemental’ were expensive to produce, adding pressure on their box office performance. ‘Haunted Mansion’ alone cost at least $150 million before marketing.

Despite its underwhelming start, ‘Haunted Mansion’ did manage to earn $9.1 million from international markets, resulting in a global bow of $33.3 million.

Elsewhere at the box office, Angel Studios’ sleeper summer hit ‘Sound of Freedom’ continues to impress with a third-place finish and a domestic total of $149 million. Paramount’s ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One’ faces tough competition from Barbenheimer but remains strong overseas, clearing the $300 million mark with a global total of $448.5 million.

Additionally, A24’s new specialty horror film, ‘Talk to Me,’ opened better than expected with $10 million, adding another success to A24’s roster.

SAG-AFTRA Defends Interim Agreements as “Crucial to Our Strategic Approach” Amid Ongoing Debate

Amidst growing concerns from prominent members regarding SAG-AFTRA‘s interim agreements, the union leadership has come forward to justify granting these pacts. These agreements allow the continuation of film and TV productions during the ongoing performers’ strike, specifically for independent productions.

In a message sent to its members on Sunday evening, the union’s TV/theatrical negotiating committee emphasized that these agreements are a “crucial part of our strategic approach” during the 2023 negotiations and strike. They clarified that most projects granted interim contracts are independent of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) member companies, whose unresolved negotiations with the union led to the current strike. However, some exceptions are being made for projects with “extraordinary circumstances mandated by legal considerations, such as Tehran.” (SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, previously explained that Tehran, an Apple TV+-distributed series produced by an Israeli company and filmed in Greece, is subject to “multiple national laws” on striking, which influenced the decision to grant the waiver.)

According to the negotiating committee, the terms and conditions of these interim agreements “reflect” what SAG-AFTRA is seeking to achieve in its ongoing TV/theatrical contract negotiations with the AMPTP. Thus, these agreements enable members to work for companies not affiliated with the AMPTP and demonstrate that “the wage increases and other terms, which the AMPTP has so far rejected, are indeed reasonable and appropriate.” (However, if SAG-AFTRA reaches a deal with significant entertainment companies before distributing projects with waivers, the terms and conditions of these interim agreements will ultimately align with the final words of the eventual sale with the AMPTP.)

Moreover, the negotiating committee argues that these pacts are essential in directing production budgets toward union-covered projects that employ union members rather than supporting non-union foreign productions. As a result, they encourage independent producers to apply for these interim agreements and urge SAG-AFTRA members to work on projects that obtain such contracts, along with other permissible work.

The message comes shortly after Viola Davis announced her decision to step away from the MRC film G20, which was set to be distributed by Amazon (MRC is not an AMPTP member, but Amazon, as the producer, is). SAG-AFTRA granted the film an interim agreement, but Davis said, “I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike.”

Previously, Sarah Silverman had also expressed concerns about interim agreements, highlighting that these independent projects could be sold to companies like Netflix or Apple, whose production subsidiaries belong to the AMPTP. She argued that “the strike ends when they come to the table, and we make a deal in agreement.”

Addressing this concern, SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee reassured members that they understand the potential issue of interim agreement content being distributed by struck companies. However, they are confident that the terms of these agreements, particularly the streaming revenue share, will render distribution through AMPTP platforms unfeasible once an industrywide deal is reached. (One of SAG-AFTRA’s proposals for companies this year was for streaming films or TV shows’ casts to receive a portion of streaming subscription revenue based on the title’s success.)

The negotiating committee further emphasized that these agreements would not “prolong” the strike but instead exert “competitive pressure” on AMPTP companies.

As of now, SAG-AFTRA has granted interim agreements to various projects, including A24’s Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, Mother Mary, featuring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, as well as Hammerstone Studios’ Flight Risk, with Mark Wahlberg. The television series The Chosen from Out of Order Studios and Balcony 9 Productions’ Bride Hard, starring Rebel Wilson, have also received waivers.

Internationally, ‘Oppenheimer’ saw strong performance, earning $98 million from 78 markets, exceeding the earlier estimate of $93.7 million. Notably, the film secured Nolan’s biggest non-superhero opening in 55 markets. With a global debut of $180.4 million against a production budget of $100 million, ‘Oppenheimer’ emerged as a formidable box-office contender.

This weekend’s one-two punch of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ created a phenomenon dubbed “Barbenheimer,” providing a much-needed boost to the film industry and box office, which was still recovering from the impact of the pandemic. NYC Actors Strike: Artificial Intelligence, Residuals are Biggest Complaints (REPORT)

Sean Gunn Calls Out AMPTP for Lack of Residuals From ‘Gilmore Girls’

During the initial day of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Sean Gunn, renowned actor and brother of DC head James Gunn, took the opportunity to voice his frustration with the AMPTP for the absence of residuals he has received for his role in the beloved series ‘Gilmore Girls.’

Gunn, who portrayed the quirky Stars Hollow resident Kirk in the show, shared his concerns with The Hollywood Reporter, mainly targeting Netflix, the streaming platform where ‘Gilmore Girls’ has continued to thrive since its debut in 2000. Despite the show’s undeniable success, Gunn claims he was not adequately compensated for his contributions.

“I was on a television show called Gilmore Girls for a long time that has brought in massive profits for Netflix,” Gunn explained. “It has been one of their most popular shows for a very long time, over a decade. It gets streamed over and over and over again, and I see almost none of the revenue that comes into that.”

The issue lies with residuals, which should come from Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio responsible for producing and licensing the series to Netflix. However, regardless of how many viewers tune in to watch the show, the actors, including Gunn, are paid the same fixed amount by the studio.

Gunn expressed dismay towards co-CEO Ted Sarandos and executive chair Reed Hastings, citing their multimillion-dollar compensations. Although he mistakenly attributed the large sums to bonuses, their earnings primarily stemmed from stock options, according to SEC filings.

In light of the current situation, Gunn believes studios and streaming services must reconsider their business models and fairly distribute wealth among those who contribute to the success of their content. Failure to do so may result in the industry facing significant challenges.

‘Gilmore Girls’ originally aired on The WB and later on The CW, gaining immense popularity when it joined Netflix’s library nearly a decade ago. However, due to how deals are structured, actors are not reaping the benefits of the show’s streaming success.

Beyond residuals and performance-based incentives, Gunn emphasized the importance of addressing artificial intelligence and revenue sharing in contract negotiations. He stressed the need for equitable compensation for using an actor’s likeness and reevaluating the revenue-sharing model to ensure fairness.

In light of the collapsed contract negotiations between the actors’ union and studios/streamers, the Writers Guild has joined the picket lines, leading to Hollywood’s first double strike in six decades.
