Will Smith to Star in Slavery Action Movie ‘Emancipation’ with ‘Training Day’ Director

Emancipation‘, an action slavery movie’ is coming soon starring Will Smith and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day)

As the Black Lives Matter movement spreads around the world following the killing of George Floyd, Will Smith is tapped to star in an upcoming slavery thriller from the director of ‘Training Day’, Antoine Fuqua.

According to reports, Will Smith has signed on to play a runaway slave in Antoine Fuqua’s action thriller ‘Emancipation’, which is scripted to being more like ‘The Revenant’ than ’12 Years a Slave’.

The movie was written by Bill Collage, which is based on the true story of Peter a runaway slave. Peter was a slave on a Louisiana plantation owned by John and Bridget Lyons, and he received a brutal whipping by one of the plantation’s overseers, which nearly kills him. Peter decides to run away to the North, where he joins the Union Army. When Peter showed Army doctors his back during a routine medical examination, the doctors took photos of his scars, and today his photo is known as “the scourged back”. The photo was published by The Independent in 1863.

The photo went viral and was shown as proof of American cruelty towards Blacks and slaves. It became a state and moved many free Blacks to join the Union Army to fight the Confederate South.

Will Smith will produce the movie under his Westbrook Studios banner. Fuqua will also executive producer under Fuqua Films.

Fuqua reportedly read the script several years ago and was working on the movie for a while with Will Smith for a long time now. ‘Emancipation’ is expected to be different than traditional slavery dramas and will feature more action. Peter uses onions to mask his scent from hunters and bloodhounds, while he makes his way through the dangerous swamps of Louisiana.

Fuqua spoke with told Deadline that the script “hit my heart and my soul in so many ways that are impossible to convey but I think you understand. We’re watching some of the feeling that I had, in the streets right now,” said Fuqua, noting the timeliness of the script. “There’s sadness, there’s anger, there’s love, faith and hope as well because of what I see young people doing today. They’re doing all the heavy lifting now. Black, white, brown, yellow, you name it. They’re out in the street, they’re young, and they’re standing up for their future. That’s important to see, and the most hopeful thing that I’m seeing, that they’re not going to stand for it anymore. I had all those feelings with I read the script,” said the director.

Meanwhile, Fuqua explains the movie’s writer received inspiration from historical documents and Peter’s personal diary. “When I read the script, I thought, what an amazing journey — a heartbreaking and heart-racing film to have an opportunity to make. It’s rare to have a film that, on the entertainment side, has action that I’ve never seen before, real action, a guy running through the swamps for his life, wrestling with alligators and snakes, being chased by hounds, then joining the Civil War, fighting against the Confederate army. Not for revenge — it’s not a revenge film — but just to get home to his family, and he was fighting for freedom. Just on that basis alone, I thought the film should be made on an epic scale.”

Fuqua added his reasoning behind casting Will Smith for the movie.

“I haven’t seen this film, this character, before. Will Smith is perfect for it. He has all the qualities to do it. He’s at a place in his life where, we know Will’s charming and a talented actor, and that he’s physical, and we’ve seen him go really deep in other films. When I sat down with Will, we both talked about taking our skill sets to another level for this one, and giving ourselves completely to it in an honest and fair, true way,” said Fuqua. “He’s focused, and is a serious actor and producer. Will cares about every aspect of it, from storyboards to the characters and the technique. Will’s a solid producer, which helps. And having an actor who gives his heart to a project like this…there’s a small group of guys like that. Denzel [Washington]Tom CruiseLeonardo DiCaprio, and Will, guys that dive in with you all the way. As a director, you cannot ask for more than to have guys like that with you.”

Fuqua added why he wanted to make this movie.

“For me, it’s probably going to be one of the most important films I will make, in my life. That’s how I really feel about it. It sticks with me, I think about it all the time. I’ve been quietly watching the news to see what is going on in the world. I watch, before I speak on a lot of these things. The best weapon I have, and those in our business have, is our art form. We get a chance to entertain, enlighten and educate through our art form. This one says it all. It should be timeless, a film that is more appropriate today than ever before, and necessary,” said Fuqua.

The “scourged back” photo “was the first viral image of the brutality of slavery that the world saw. Which is interesting, when you put it into perspective with today and social media and what the world is seeing, again. You can’t fix the past, but you can remind people of the past and I think we have to, in an accurate, real way. We all have to look for a brighter future for us all, for everyone. That’s one of the most important reasons to do things right now, is show our history. We have to face our truth before we can move forward,” said Fuqua, who said he plans to shoot Emancipation “as soon as possible,” adding that it all “depends on Will’s schedule.”

Will Smith was in the middle of filming Warner Bros’ sports drama ‘King Richard’, when the movie’s production shut down due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. He will start filming ‘King Richard’ as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Fuqua will continue working on ‘Infinite’, which stars Mark Wahlberg. ‘Emancipation’ is expected to start filming early next year.

In relevant news, in an open letter to Hollywood, Black writers are calling for Hollywood to become more accountable and support aspiring and working writers

Following the killing of George Floyd by police officers, there is a new Black renaissance we have not seen since the Civil Rights Movement of the late 60s and 70s. Now, after many Hollywood studios announced their support for Black Lives Matter, writers are calling for better accountability and the end of systemic racism in the film industry.

According to a report by the Los Angeles TimesBlack writers are looking for Hollywood to redo their hiring practices to allow for more progress among writers and content creators of color in the industry.

On Friday, the Writers Guild of America West published an open letter from the Committee of Black Writers (CBW). The “Letter to Hollywood” is calling for a major change in the way the TV and film industry hires writers and to partner with schools to prepare Black creators to join the business. It also calls for accountability.

In an open letter to Hollywood, Black writers are calling for Hollywood to become more accountable and support aspiring and working writers

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, Black writers are looking for Hollywood to redo their hiring practices to allow for more progress among writers and content creators of color in the industry.

On Friday, the Writers Guild of America West published an open letter from the Committee of Black Writers (CBW). The “Letter to Hollywood” is calling for a major change in the way the TV and film industry hires writers and to partner with schools to prepare Black creators to join the business. It also calls for accountability.

“Either you commit to a new, institutionalized system of accountability with and to Black writers, or you prove that you’re putting on just another strategic, virtue-signaling performance deemed necessary to survive the times,” the writers said in the letter, signed by Michelle Amor and Hilliard Guess, co-chairs of the CBW, and Bianca Sams, its vice chair.

Writers say more needs to be done to address the systemic problems from the lack of access Black filmmakers, writers, and creators have to the industry.

“We Black writers who have ‘made it’ in Hollywood have still been denied jobs at all levels, passed over for opportunities we were qualified for, rejected from writers’ rooms because of a ‘lack of experience,’ unsupported when seeking to create content specifically for Black audiences, critically underpaid and mistreated compared to white counterparts, and historically ignored during awards season,” the CBW wrote in the letter.

The letter points out how Hollywood productions block Black writers and other minority groups. As evidence, they highlighted the 2020 Inclusion Report, which found, “systemic discrimination against writers from underrepresented groups remains pervasive,” while white writers received 80% of all film jobs in 2018, while Black writers only received 5.6% of writing jobs, according to UCLA’s 2020 Hollywood Diversity Report. “Some have tried to blame this on a shortage of Black writers, yet there are at least 808 self-identified Black writers in the Guild; we have been here, ready to work,” the writers said.

“When you need us (and you will need us), you now know where to find us,” the letter ended. “Have your people call our people.”

Meanwhile, YouTube is spending a $100 million to support Black creators. “At YouTube, we believe Black lives matter and we all need to do more to dismantle systemic racism,” YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki wrote in a Thursday morning blog post where she revealed the multiyear fund “dedicated to amplifying and developing the voices of Black creators and artists and their stories.”

“The execution of George Floyd — and Breonna Taylor and Ahmad Arbery — has led to unprecedented protests for racial justice in every part of our nation — and globally. And it started in part because 17-year-old Darnella Frazier defiantly and courageously recorded the video that has forced us all to confront what we were seeing and name it,” said Malika Saada Saar, a civil and human rights lawyer and social impact human rights lead at YouTube. “Video can be a powerful human rights tool for bearing witness to injustice, and Bear Witness, Take Action will be part of that hope and urgent call for change.”

75 TV Shows and Movies Going to Film in Georgia Adding 40,000 Jobs

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announces plans to reopen the state’s film industry as a way to jump-start the economy after the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the statement by Gov. Brian Kemp, an estimated 40,000 production workers will find jobs at 75 projects, which are expected to start filming over the next 18 months.

The estimate will also impact other second-line businesses including 17,000 Georgia businesses. These production companies have added a huge impact on Georgia’s economy. In fact, in 2019, nearly 400 movies and TV shows filmed in Georgia impacting 3,040 motion picture and television industry businesses.

“Production companies want to be in Georgia and create tens of thousands of jobs for workers across the state, and today’s announcement is welcome news as we continue safely reopening our state,”  Governor Kemp said. “I thank the Georgia Film Office for their work during the pandemic, and I thank the production companies who always vowed to return to Georgia when the time was right for them to safely get back to work.”

Tyler Perry is set to start production on July 8th. Then on July 28, his other BET series “The Oval” will start production. On April 27, Tyler Perry released his guidelines, which include testing, quarantining, and other safety precautions.

Several major TV shows and movies have filmed in Georgia including “Jumanji”, “Stranger Things,” “Jungle Cruise,” and “Ozark”.

“The creative arts and entertainment – particularly television and film – have long been driving forces in our economy, and they will be instrumental as we recover from the impact of the pandemic,” said Georgia House of Representatives Speaker David Ralston.

“Georgia is ready once again to resume the state’s thriving movie, TV, and streaming production industry,” said Charles Rivkin, chairman, and CEO of Motion Picture Association. “The terrific collaboration between the Georgia Film Office, local studios, production companies, and industry stakeholders to create these important guidelines will ensure a safe return to work for Georgians in our industry and play an important role in helping restart Georgia’s economy.”

In relevant news, TV executives are asking writers to rewrite scenes to allow productions to follow Coronavirus safety guidelines, which means fewer extras, more CGI, and fewer opportunities for smaller speaking roles.

As Coronavirus COVID-19 reopening process is spreading across the world, many studios are preparing for upcoming productions. That said, there is a level of uncertainty on how to film a TV show or movie and still follow Coronavirus production guidelines.

According to a new report by the Hollywood Reporterstudios are asking showrunners to cut background extras, reconsider filming sex and fight scenes, and remove some scenes.

This news comes after last April, where Hollywood producers and executives said that despite Georgia’s reopening since the pandemic, not many were interested in filming in the state. According to a Deadline report, even if Georgia plans to relaxed restrictions to include more film and TV production, Hollywood studios were not planning on taking advantage of filming in Georgia any time soon. Not until testing across the nation increases dramatically, and industry guidelines are created to provide a safe environment for their cast and crew. It appears Georgia leaders were listening and have followed through with safety guidelines and additional testing.

The Georgia COVID-19 Best Practices guide include social distancing, limiting the number of background actors, temperature checks, testing, and hiring an Occupational Risk Prevention person who will monitor all parts of production to ensure safety is followed. Other recommendations include:

  • Actors wearing masks except when on camera
  • A clear barrier between actors while establishing positions
  • Using camera tricks to make actors look closer than they really are
  • Reducing Background extras when possible
  • Virtual location scouting
  • Casting virtually as much as possible
  • Eliminating the sharing of mics, costumes, and camera equipment

Companies are asked to follow these Georgia recommendations.

“We are so grateful to the hardworking people who make up and contribute to Georgia’s incredibly successful film and TV industry, and we thank them for all the ways they have given back throughout the state’s response to COVID-19,” said Governor Kemp. “The Georgia Film Office has maintained their close work with industry executives to develop these outlines for how productions can help protect cast and crew members.”

“Georgia is open for business, and we look forward to an even stronger relationship with the film industry moving forward,” said Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson. “Thanks to the historic best practices guide, Georgia is able to safely send the tens of thousands of film and TV industry employees back to work and restart production. The economic impact of the film touches local communities and small businesses across Georgia. We look forward to resuming the hundreds of productions across the state and to keeping Georgia as the nation’s film and TV capital.”

YouTube Launches $100 Million Fund to Support Black Creators

YouTube is creating a $100 million fund to support Black content creators on its streaming platform.

Part of the effort to amplify Black voices, YouTube will live-stream a fundraising event called ‘Bear Witness, Take Action’ on Saturday, June 13th. The upcoming special will be hosted by Common and Keke Palmer, the 90-minute special will feature YouTube content creators including Jemele Hill, Soledad O’Brien, Patrisse Cullors, Roxane Gay, Prince EA, Baratunde Thurston and others in a roundtable discussion and musical tribute.

During the event, viewers will be encouraged to donate to the Equal Justice Initiative, where YouTube has already committed $1 million in donations.

Outside of amplifying Black voices, YouTube will “examine how our policies and products are working for everyone — but specifically for the Black community — and close any gaps.”

In relevant news, Michael B. Jordan calls on Hollywood to hire more Black people.

On Saturday, actor Michael B. Jordan called out police brutality and racial injustice at a protest organized by the four major talent agencies in Hollywood.

The actor whose acting career was launched by the 2013 indie film ‘Fruitvale Station’, called Hollywood to hire more black people and increase diversity.

“You committed to a 50/50 gender parity in 2020,” Jordan said. “Where is the challenge to commit to black hiring? Black content led by black executives, black consultants. Are you policing our storytelling as well? Let us bring our darkness to the light.”

Coronavirus: TV Execs Are Asking Writers to Cut Extras, Speaking Roles (Report)

TV executives are asking writers to rewrite scenes to allow productions to follow Coronavirus safety guidelines, which means fewer extras, more CGI, and fewer opportunities for smaller speaking roles.

As Coronavirus COVID-19 reopening process is spreading across the world, many studios are preparing for upcoming productions. That said, there is a level of uncertainty on how to film a TV show or movie and still follow Coronavirus production guidelines.

According to a new report by the Hollywood Reporter, studios are asking showrunners to cut background extras, reconsider filming sex and fight scenes, and remove some scenes.

On June 11th, Lacey Rose with The Hollywood Reporter, detailing the impact of the Coronavirus and new filming guidelines is having on the film industry.  Many showrunners are waiting to change their scripts because they do not want to rewrite an episode multiple times while filming guidelines change.

“What we’re telling our writers is ‘Don’t be dumb,’ ” one executive told Hollywood Reporter. They added crowd scenes with several background actors would not work saying, “We’re not going to be able to shoot it, so don’t write it.”

“It’s very hard when you don’t know what the future looks like,” says Marta Kauffman, showrunner of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie. She added some of the scenes filmed in an assisted living facility with several background actors, which will no longer qualify under these new circumstances.

Meanwhile, Kenya Barris explains his new show ‘Grown-ish’ takes place on a college campus, which requires crowd scenes. “It’s literally about a place where people gather,” he says, “and you can only do so many [contained] bottle episodes before it starts to lose the tone and feeling of what the show is.”

Including removing the number of background actors, new guidelines are pushing directors to film fewer takes, and shorter. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, scripts could be five or six pages shorter, to save money due to new Coronavirus COVID-19 protocols. Writers are also asked to use fewer characters, which means fewer roles for small speaking parts.

“The technology that brought you dragons and exploding people is the same technology that will be bringing you ordinary crowd scenes on shows you wouldn’t expect [to use] visual effects,” says You‘s Sera Gamble.

Other approaches to new filming guidelines include heavily using CGI and post-production to recreate scenes. One executive explained there has to be a level of backups “because you can’t force an actor to do something that they’re not comfortable with.”

In relevant news, the Chicago Film Office announced this week they would start issuing film permits.

City officials announced Chicago’s health metrics are on track for a transition from Phase 2 (Stay at Home) to Phase 3 (Cautiously Reopen) in early June. As a result, some of the city’s services will increase operations.  As a result, the Chicago Film Office will start issuing film permits starting June 15, 2020, for productions with crews with ten or fewer people. “We are working with the Illinois Film Office to develop these guidelines further for when larger film production can resume safely. At this time, some support services from the City of Chicago may be limited.”

In addition, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announcers TV and Film production can restart on June 12th.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom broke the news on Friday and revealed guidelines for film and TV productions to start filming in Hollywood following the Coronavirus COVID-19related shutdown.

“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing,” the California Department of Public Health said in a statement via the Governor’s Office on Friday. “To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.”
