Georgia Ranked No. 1 in Film Production

Georgia is ranked number 1 in film production.

Georgia-filmed productions have received nearly 50 total 2020 Emmy Award nominations. According to Gov. Brian Kemp, Georgia is ranked the No. 1 Film Production Leader by Business Facilities Magazine. Also, Georgia was on track for another record-setting year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Georgia takes the crown in our new Film Production Leaders category, ranking the states that are the top locations for motion picture and TV production,” writes Business Facilities Magazine.

“Thank you to Business Facilities Magazine for featuring Georgia in their 2020 Rankings Report,” said Governor Kemp. “Our production numbers show Georgia was on pace for another record year for the film industry before COVID-19, and they confirm that Georgia continues to lead the way in film production. The film industry has had a significant impact in communities across the Peach State, and this top-ranking puts a spotlight on the hardworking Georgians who are the real faces of this great industry.”

235 film and TV productions filmed in Georgia during the fiscal year 2020 and spent $2.2 billion in the state, putting it on track for a massive year before the Coronavirus shutdown productions. Since the shutdown, Georgia’s productions are starting to ramp up with at least 20 productions currently filming or in pre-production.

Georgia-filmed productions reached 50 nominations. These shows include “Watchmen,” “Ozark,” “Stranger Things,” “Love is Blind,” “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Broken Bones,” and “The Outsider’s” actor Jason Bateman.

HBO’s limited series “Watchmen,” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” also earned Peabody Awards in June.

Last month, Gov. Kemp announced film productions will start to resume production in Georgia and will bring back an estimated 40,000 estimated jobs and 75 different projects.

“This No. 1 ranking, in addition to our record-setting production pace in film before COVID-19, is a testament to everyone who is involved in the film industry in Georgia,” said Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson. “I congratulate our Emmy-nominated productions on their exciting news, but especially congratulate our team in the Georgia Film Office, our Georgia-based crew, studios, small businesses, and our production partners across the state for this exceptional recognition. It’s heartening to see more productions getting off the ground in recent weeks, and our relationship with our film partners is stronger than ever.”

In relevant news, Tyler Perry opened up on how he managed to film TV safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After wrapping production on his BET series “Sistas” without a COVID-19 during the two-week shoot, now, production for “The Oval” is ramping up as the cast and crew are setting up to arrive at Tyler Perry Studios on Thursday. Tyler Perry says there is not much he plans to do this time around differently, especially when it comes to wearing masks and around the campus.

“I made sure that the cast and crew and everybody wore their masks when they weren’t on set because I do know for a fact that masks help stop the spread — scientifically, I know that,” Perry tells Variety. “And everybody adhered to that, even though we were all testing negative. I just didn’t want someone to be incubating with [COVID-19] for three to 12 days, and we not know it.”

Tyler Perry and the production crew for “Sistas” wore their masks for 12 to 14 hours at a time while shooting the 22-episode season.

“Listen, I was the masked police. Every time I saw something I was screaming about it,” Perry says. “It’s summer in Georgia so credit to the crew — it’s burning up here and they were still doing the right thing. So, I gave a lot more breaks for people to have water because we had a couple people that got dehydrated from all the heat, and the water breaks were actually the ‘breath break’ where you can pull your mask down, drink some water and get some fresh air.”

Netflix Just Bought the Rights to a Reddit Horror Story, Which is HUGE News for Aspiring Screenwriters

Netflix has made a “low seven-figure” deal to acquire the screen rights to a Redditors short horror story.

According to reports, Netflix acquired the screen rights for Matt Query’s short story “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch,” which was posted across six posts on Reddit.

Deadline reports Netflix hired Query’s brother, Harrison, to write the screenplay. Meanwhile, Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment will produce. 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are also in talks to produce the project with Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Michael Clear.

The story was posted on r/NoSleep subreddit, a popular space for users to share their original horror stories. It centers around a couple, named Harry and Sasha, who buy their dream home in Idaho but soon discover they are not alone.

According to Deadline, the couple “meet their neighbors, who inform them that there is a malevolent spirit in the valley, one that manifests itself by coming to the house in the same manner at the start of each season. There are certain steps that must be followed to keep the spirit out of their house, and the tension and violence grows with each gory ritual as the duel between the spirits and [Harry] the ex-Marine soldier becomes personal.”

The first part of the story has received more than 3000 upvotes over the past five months, with Part II: The Lights, Part III: The Bear Chase, Part IV: The Scarecrows, and Part V: The Ghosts Arrive also proving popular amongst readers.

Netflix has gained a reputation for spending a ton of money on obtaining original streaming content, which has paid dividends for both aspiring screenwriters and actors. It’s projected Netflix will spend $17.3 billion on new content in 2020, which increased $2 billion from last year.

Coronavirus: New Orleans Filming to Resume Next Week

Filming in New Orleans will start next week. It will be the first time since the city shut down productions in March to fight the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The New Orleans film industry accounts for 12,000 jobs and adds an estimated $1.2 billion to the city’s economy every year.

“With each film crew consisting of 85% local workers, the return of productions means getting our residents back to work in an industry that will ensure that they are safe,” said Carroll Morton, the director of Film New Orleans, the municipal government office who oversees the industry.

There were 10 productions in New Orleans that were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These include OWN’s ‘Queen Sugar’, TNT’s ‘CLAWS’, and Bryan Cranston’s ‘Your Honor’.

The first project to resume filming will be an Untitled Amazon Prime Series. Other productions are likely to start filming include “On Becoming a God in Central Florida”, which is a dark comedy starring Kristen Dunst on Showtime.

Coronavirus guidelines include smaller crews, COVID-19 testing several times per week, PPE and sanitizing facilities. Each production requires an on-set health supervisor and will hire sanitization companies to clean sets.

In related news, the Coronavirus is having a major impact on the film industry itself. That said, Vancouver has the potential to become the next Hollywood as filming is ramping up in the city. According to reports, Warner Bros. TV is planning for a late August start for several of their TV shows in Vancouver. The casts of several Warner Bros. TV shows filming in Vancouver received letters from the studio, informing them they will be returning for the 2020-2021 season this August.

In addition, nearly all film and TV productions in Los Angeles area were stopped due to the Coronavirus-related shut down from April to June. According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles only had 194 filming days during the second quarter of 2020, which is only 2% of the 8,632 recorded days at the same time last year. As a result, the Coronavirus has resulted in a 98% drop in film production in Los Angeles. It is the “lowest filming level on record.”

72nd Primetime Emmy Award Nominations were announced on Tuesday. The virtual announcement was led by Leslie Jones (SNL), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Josh Gad (Frozen) and Tatiana Maslany (Perry Mason).

HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ dominated with 26 total nominations including for Outstanding Limited Series and actors Regina King and Jeremy Irons.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ reached second with 20 total nominations, followed by Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘Succession’, which had 18 total nominations.

The top 5 productions had casting calls shared on Project Casting.

Netflix had the most total nominations with 160. Disney_ reached 19 nominations, Apple TV had 18 nominations and Quibi had 10.

This year’s ceremony will take place on September 20th on ABC and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

A TV series is now casting featured speaking roles in Nashville, Tennessee.

Casting directors are now casting actors, models, and talent to work on scenes filming on Tuesday, August 4th in Nashville, Tennessee. Details for the project have not been released.

Producers are seeking the following types:

FEATURED SPEAKING TALENT – SALESMAN: Male , ALL ethnicities, age range 35-55, This character will need to be bright, smart and put together, but also a little obnoxious/over the top and pushy.
*NEW FACES that have not yet worked on any season of this locally filmed reality series (which we are not allowed to disclose)**

Shoot Location: NASHVILLE, TN area (*KINGSTON SPRINGS-West Nashville*) – Filming will be both Indoors & Outdoors

**PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT IF YOU ARE NOT LOCAL or able to be Local to the KINGSTON SPRINGS, TN AREA!!! (within a reasonable self-drive distance)

SHOOT DATE: TUESDAY 8/4/20 – ALSO REQUIRED COVID-19 TEST: FRIDAY 7/31/20

THE ACTOR SELECTED FOR THIS ROLE WILL BE REQUIRED TO GET COVID TESTED BY FRIDAY, AUG 1 AT THE NISSAN STADIUM TESTING FACILITY IN ORDER TO HAVE RESULTS BACK IN TIME FOR THE SHOOT DAY.

Production Company and staff/crew are taking COVID-19 very seriously and have put very specific precautions and guidelines in place. If you are not comfortable being on an indoor set with other people or with any of the requirements below, do not submit. You are submitting and working at your own risk.

All staff/crew is required to have their temperature checked upon arrival to set by a set medic.
All staff/crew is required to wear face masks and/or face shields when on set.
Extras will be required to wear a face mask covering their mouth and nose at all times on set except while filming, no exceptions.
Extras will be required to take their temperature the morning of filming, fill out and submit a medical evaluation form from National Set Medics and will have their temperature taken upon arrival to set.

We do not yet have Call Time/Wrap Times, so you MUST have FLEXIBLE/Open availability if submitting to be available regardless of what Call/Wrap Times end up being to allow for changes. Please DO NOT submit if you do not have FULL DAY availability. This could be a multiple day recurring role.

Pay Rate – $250.00 for up to 8 hours (will be paid the full rate even if you work less than 8 hours, but be prepared for 8 just in case).

–VIDEO AUDITIONS WILL BE REQUIRED if selected from you photo! MUST be able to submit a selfie/camera style video audition NO LATER than Thursday 7/30/20 morning to be considered. Please don’t submit a photo if you aren’t able to provide the audition video if selected–
