Black Actors Reveal The Struggles with Portraying Black Trauma

Actors Aldis Hodge, Jay Pharoah, Algee Smith, Derek Luke and Chris Chalk discussing being a Black actor in Hollywood

Hollywood is facing a major change when it comes to racial representation both in front and behind the camera.

As part of Variety’s #Represent series, Aldis Hodge, Jay Pharoah, Algee Smith, Derek Luke and Chris Chalk got candid about their experiences in Hollywood in a revealing “Black Men in Hollywood” conversation.

One interesting part of the roundtable focused on the actors discussing Black pain as an actor. Whether if it’s portraying a slave or police brutality, the actors discussed the difficulties surrounding accepting those roles and being responsible for broadcasting Black suffering.

Algee Smith opened up about the pressure of portraying such roles in the movies ‘Detroit’ and ‘The Hate U Give’, each movie shows extreme violence against Black people.

“I was obviously in a very emotional place. However, it was a very honest place,” Smith recalled. “I feel like I’ve played so many roles where I’ve either died as a young black teenager or where it’s been something that hasn’t been edifying a black teenager or a black man at all. And so, I was like, for myself, I’m tired of playing those roles and I said ‘I’m done with it.’”

“I had to take Ambien while I was shooting Detroit because I couldn’t sleep,” he continued. “But you do it for a reason. That’s why we are actors, that’s why we put ourselves in that position, to feel for people.”

“My frustration with the industry was that what was normal and what was actually real was not being portrayed. A small percentage of what the Black culture experiences was being portrayed to the masses as the totality of our definition as a culture,” Hodge said. “It was really disheartening. So, I said, ‘Look, I’m not doing any of this anymore.’ Took a stance. Of course, you lose a couple of jobs, you sacrifice a little bit, [but] it’s all good, because it pushes your career, drives your career to a very specific point.”

“And then, as I got older, there are opportunities that came my way that were challenging,” he says. “When Underground came around, and I said, ‘How do we watch five or six seasons of our pain?’ But then, when I read it, and I saw how it was distributed and I said, “Oh, there’s a difference here,’” Hodge continued.

Luke admitted the idea of playing a slave was tough for him in the TV series ‘Underground’.

“I said I would never play a slave,” Luke said. “My instinct was that it was traumatic enough being in my skin. It was traumatic enough coming to Hollywood and having to come through playing a thug or a gangster role and my spiritual lens was always like, ‘How do I navigate in a space that may reject my race?’”

Meanwhile, Chaulk noted that if actors do not take these roles, we run the risk of Hollywood perpetuating the stereotypes without Black actors.

“I was doing some workshops in a school, and the [history] book never said ‘slavery,’ it said ‘indentured servitude.’ So, if we don’t tell our story, they’re going to change that story,” Chalk said. “I want the world to see what we have survived. I want the world to know the knees on our neck. And I’m grateful to take the weight of that.”

Coronavirus: Vancouver The Next Hollywood? Warner Bros. TV Shows To Resume Filming This August

Vancouver may become the next Hollywood as the world struggles to recover from Coronavirus pandemic.

According to reports, Warner Bros. TV is planning for a late August start for several of their TV shows in Vancouver. The casts of several Warner Bros. TV shows filming in Vancouver received letters from the studio, informing them they will be returning for the 2020-2021 season this August.

The planned start dates vary or each show, but it will start sometime between August 20th through the 27th. The actors will need to arrive in Vancouver two weeks early for self-isolation, which is required by British Columbia. Filming will start after the quarantine period.

The shows include the following:

That said, ‘Supernatural’ cast members returned to Vancouver earlier this month, with the show on track to start filming in mid-August.

Other productions set to resume filming in Vancouver include ABC’s ‘A Million Little Things,’ which will start production in August.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, virtually all film and TV productions in the Los Angeles area were stopped due to the Coronavirus-related shut down from April to June. According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles only had 194 filming days during the second quarter of 2020, which is only 2% of the 8,632 recorded days at the same time last year. As a result, the Coronavirus has resulted in a 98% drop in film production in Los Angeles. It is the “lowest filming level on record.”

FilmLA President Paul Adley also explained to the Los Angeles Times, “we also have to be very concerned about the thousands of small businesses that depend on this industry and whether they have been able to sustain for three months-plus without work.” Adley predicts over 5,000 small businesses in Los Angeles of 10 people or less rely on the film industry to pay the bills.

In Georgia, according to the statement by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, an estimated 40,000 production workers will find jobs at 75 projects, which are expected to start filming over the next 18 months.

The estimate will also impact other second-line businesses, including 17,000 Georgia businesses. Currently, there are 20 TV shows and movies filming in Georgia, but a majority of these productions are reality shows.

HBO Max Reaches 4.1 Million Subscribers in One Month

HBO Max Gets 4.1 Million subscribers in its first month with plans to reach 50 million by 2025.

AT&T CEO John Stanley called it a “flawless launch” despite the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. HBO Max reached 4.1 million subscribers. 3.1 million are regular customers, while the remaining 1 million are subscribed through AT&T wireless packages.

On an earnings call on Thursday, the company revealed its plans to reach 50 million subscribers by 2025, and their projections put the company on track to reach this revenue goal. Currently, HBO and HBO Max have a combined subscriber base of 36.3 million, making it a 5% increase since 2019.

Engagement on the HBO Max shows has also been positive. 70% more average weekly hours were watched than HBO’s other service, HBO Now, which AT&T CEO attributes to the platform’s “world-class content.” Stanley added that by August the streaming platform will have 21 new original productions, which he believes “will sustain our near-term sub acquisition effort.”

This news comes after a report HBO Max is working on a ‘The Batman’ spinoff TV Series. The upcoming series will be a police TV series that is set in the same world Reeves is developing in the upcoming Pattinson movies. Terrence Winter will write the show’s script and it will focus around Gotham City Police Department’s attempt to keep the city safe. According to the press release, the series will focus on “the motion picture’s examination […] of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.”

HBO Max has not released the show’s name. However, some sources suggest the show will be called ‘Gotham Central’. Director Reeves also made a statement saying, “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long-form format can afford.”
