Potential Budget Cuts Put Philadelphia’s Film Industry in Jeopardy

0

Philadelphia film industry workers are concerned budget cuts will hurt the city’s film industry.

The Greater Philadelphia Film Office is usually the main point of contact for TV and film producers who may provide resources for producers that are interested in filming in the city, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer,

Philadelphia Mayor Kenney recently announced due to the pandemic related budget crisis; his new budget will defund the Office of the City representative, which provides about $131,000 per year to the Greater Philadelphia Film Office by 18%.

A spokesperson told the Philadelphia Inquirer the mayor is aware the cuts are necessary due to the Coronavirus pandemic, as the city fell short of nearly $650 million.

“The revised FY21 budget was created with clear priorities in mind: keeping all Philadelphians safe, healthy, and educated while maintaining core municipal services,” said spokesperson Lauren Cox. “While the administration values the Greater Philadelphia Film Office and its efforts to bring film projects to the city, our support for their work will need to shift given the painful budget cuts we’ve had to make.”

Philadelphia’s annual budget contribution is one of the four main ways that provide funding to the film office. Another is the agency’s fundraising, a $175,000 grant from the Wyncote Foundation, and corporate sponsorship.

The most significant advantage of filming in Philadelphia is the Pennsylvania tax credit program, which started in 2004. $812 million in film production tax credits were approved by 500 projects, generating $3 billion in direct spending. A cut to the Greater Philadelphia Film Office could hurt the city from competing with major cities such as Atlanta.

In relevant news, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the state would publish guidelines next Monday, which would allow film and TV productions to start up in some counties in the state as early as next week.

Newsom broke the news on Wednesday with industry leaders, including Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos and critically acclaimed director Ava DuVernay.

Sarandos pointed out productions were underway in South Korea, Sweden, and Iceland, and those protocols can be transferred to America once production resumes.

“The choices that we have to make today are not staying home or not, it really is how do we get back to work safely,” Sarandos said. “It can definitely be figured out. We have the smartest people in the world working on it.”

Production will not be allowed to resume until the state reaches “Stage 3” of its reopening plan. That said, California is allowing some counties with low viral infections to start up sooner than later.

“It remains a challenging part of the state for us still,” he said. “We are concerned they will be a few weeks behind everybody else.”

Michael Bay’s New Movie ‘Songbird’ is Now Casting Speaking Roles

0

Michael Bay’s new movie is reportedly now casting and ready to start production in five weeks in Los Angeles, California.

Around the country, Hollywood productions are still largely shut down. Timelines for nearly everything is still up in the air, and product lines are still shut down indefinitely.

That said, one filmmaker has a plan to resume production sooner than later. According to Deadline, a Michael Bay production hopes to start filming in Los Angeles as soon as five weeks. The movie, titled ‘Songbird’ takes place in the future in a world ruined by disease and millions of people on lockdown.

Former Paramount production chief Adam Goodman’s Invisible Narratives has teamed with Michael Bay to produce Songbird, a pandemic thriller that plans to take an unusual approach to shoot a movie in Los Angeles during the lockdown. It will begin production within five weeks and might be the first film to shoot in the city.

The film will be directed by Adam Mason (Into The Dark), who wrote the script with Simon Boyes (Misconduct). The filmmakers are providing remote training for the actors. None of the participants would say exactly how they plan to shoot a movie at a time when the guilds are still compiling their own safety protocols so that production can resume.

Financing for the “low budget” movie is reportedly secure and the various unions involved have apparently given the project the okay to move forward. However, there are many unknowns about how the production will film and produce on location. Deadline explains the movie as the movie could take a found footage approach. The project says Michael Bay is now casting for the new movie and it could be one of the first projects to be made during a quarantine.

In relevant news, the CW and Warner Bros. Television is now recasting the lead role of ‘Batwoman‘ as Ruby Rose leaves the show.

Actress Ruby Rose, the star of the CW’s new drama series ‘Batwoman’ is leaving the Warner Bros. Television drama series after one season. The show, which the CW renewed for a second season, will continue with the series and recasting the lead role.

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose said in a statement “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

According to Deadline, her departure is not released to the stunt injury she sustained during filming of Season 1, which left her facing paralysis and emergency surgery. Deadline reports she decided to leave the show after looking back on the first season and its challenges. The show, which is shot in Vancouver, was cut short due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Deadline says Ruby Rose was not accustomed to working long hours on a network TV show. “I hear Rose, whose most extensive previous TV gig was a nine-episode arc on Orange Is the New Black, was not happy, and the show’s team was not happy to a point where no one could see this going for another season. It was not a good fit, and the studio and the star opted to part ways.”

Ruby Rose Reveals Why She Left ‘Batwoman’

Ruby Rose Breaks down The Reasons She Exited ‘Batwoman’

(Update: August 12, 2020) Ruby Rose announced in May she will not be returning to CW’s ‘Batwoman’ for the second season. Now, Rose is opening up as to why she left the DC series, including having to undergo surgery after an on-set back accident in 2019.

“Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. Being the lead in anything is tough,” Rose tells EW in a new interview. “But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn’t the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film — regardless if it’s action or if it’s emotional — in whichever ways it’s taxing.”

She also made her decision to leave the show during the Coronavirus shutdown, which allowed her time to look back at her acting career. Rose told EW her decision was not due to her injury.

“It wasn’t so much [the injury], especially because after we wrapped up we didn’t get to finish the real finale because of COVID,” she says. “You know, you have time in quarantine and sort of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do. I think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about a lot of things. I respect them so much and they’ve been so respectful to me.”

Rose added how proud she is to have played the first gay lead character of a live-action superhero series.

“I think it was actually a beautiful way to do something, especially since that was the first time it’s ever been done — the first time Batwoman has ever been played in live-action and that she was LGBTQ. I’m very honored to have been able to play her.”

Ruby Rose also added how supportive she is to see Javicia Leslie cast as the next Batwoman.

“I think she definitely knows what she’s doing and she seems fantastic,” Rose told EW. “I think that honestly, I was so proud and so happy when I was told who would be replacing me. I’m just really stoked and I’m definitely going to watch the next season as well and see how it all comes together.”

The CW casts Javicia Leslie for ‘Batwoman’.

(Update: July 9, 2020) Javicia Leslie will take on the lead role in the ‘Batwoman’ series after the departure of star Ruby Rose at the end of season one. She will play a character named Ryan Wilder and will become the first Black actress to play Batwoman in a live-action TV series or feature film.

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Leslie.

The show’s producer decided to create a new character instead of hiring someone to replace Rose as Kate Kane. Leslie’s character is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

Leslie recently finished working on CBS’ ‘God Friended Me’, which ran for two seasons on CBS. Her credits also include BET’s ‘The Family Business’ and feature film ‘Always a Bridesmaid’.

Batwoman is set to return in early 2021. Filming is on hold indefinitely due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created,” she said. “Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV said in a joint statement their commitment to casting another LGBTQ actress for the lead role.

“Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best,” the two companies said. “The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

Study Finds 75% of People Are Willing to Go to Back to the Movies

If Coronavirus safety measures are set up, a majority of people are willing to go back to the movies.

According to an EDO moviegoer study called “Movie Theaters and Social Distancing,” 75% reported if theaters added certain safety measurements, they were more likely to return to movie theaters upon their reopening.

Safety measures important to those surveyed include:

  • Hand sanitizer stations throughout the building
  • Limited showtimes to allow for extended cleaning times between screenings
  • Cinema employees wearing facemarks
  • Employees getting temperatures checked before work
  • Attendees wearing facemarks

On a side note, 60% of those surveyed they were open to getting their temperatures taken when they go to the theater.

As we reported earlier this week, Amazon was considering acquiring AMC theaters. AMC Theaters’ stock increased 42.4% on Monday after reports Amazon was considering acquiring the company.

According to reports, Amazon and the company’s CEO Jeff Bezos are “circling” the theater company and have held talks about a “potential takeover of AMC by Amazon.” That said, there is no word if these negotiations are still active or if the deal is settled.

As a result of the report, AMC Entertainment Holdings saw their stock increase 42.7 percent on Monday morning, more than double the company’s record low close on April 13th.

The Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic had a disastrous impact on the movie theater franchise. Due to the outbreak, the company had to shut down all of their locations and putting the future of the company in jeopardy. In addition, the company announced it would stop showing Universal Pictures films in its theaters after the studio to send a few hit movies went straight to video on demand.

’13 Reasons Why’ is Coming to an End this Summer (VIDEO)

0

Netflix’s ’13 Reasons Why is ending this summer.

For three seasons, fans have watched the students of Liberty High School deal with traumatic events, including suicide, sexual assault, and school shooting.

On Monday, Netflix announced the end is near for the teen drama “13 Reasons Why,” which will air its fourth and final season this June 5th. The streaming platform released behind-the-scenes video announcing the series’ finale will have ten episodes and will air next month.

“In the series’ final season, Liberty High School’s senior class prepares for graduation,” reads the season’s logline. “But before they say goodbye, they’ll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever.”

Several of the show’s cast members are seen crying and hugging in the one-minute teaser, which gives some hints about the final season.

In relevant news, the creator of “Black Mirror “thinks the world is not ready for a new season considering the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is a real threat to the world.

“Black Mirror” is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. But, can the world handle a viral pandemic and terror of a sci-fi series? Currently, “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker thinks the world is not ready for a new season of “Black Mirror.”

Recently, Brooker was asked by Radio Times about Season 6. The news outlet reports Brooker said, “he’s not sure if audiences could stomach another season at the moment.”

“I’ve been busy doing things. I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing,” Brooker said. “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on any one of those [‘Black Mirror’ episodes]. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

Anthony Hopkins Advice for Young Actors: “Stop trying to be cool because it doesn’t work”

Anthony Hopkins shares tips for aspiring actors

Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is a legend in Hollywood. As a student of Laurence Olivier, a classically-trained actor, he brought amazing acting to movies such as The Silence of the Lambs. Many assume he’s a method actor but, in a new interview with Augustman, Hopkins speaks on how he learns his lines and how to get into character.

Hopkins says he focuses extremely hard on learning lines to the point it has a chemical and mental impact on his brain. He says, “Well, I learn the text so deeply that I think it has some chemical effect in my brain. I’ve been playing some pretty tough guys, like King Lear, or this guy with dementia in The Father. It’s exhausting, but I’m not a method actor in that sense. I believe in learning the text which is there. Once you know it so well that you can improvise and make it real, it’s easy. You can’t pretend to know it – it’s impossible to, and I couldn’t do it. I’ve worked with actors who don’t know their stuff, and they were just wasting everyone’s time.”

Hopkins explains there’s a technique to being scary on screen. He says, “Oh yes, I know I can. It’s a technique. When I read the script of The Silence of The Lambs I thought, ‘Ah, I know how to play this guy.’ You get a sense of how you could do it: the more subtle and quiet you are, the scarier it is.”

Hopkins added tips for aspiring actors. He says, “I try to help. I tell them to stop trying to be cool because it doesn’t work, to instead learn the craft and be disciplined. It’s not a competition. Being in competition with people is a waste of time. How do you compete? At the awards? You have five people who are happy to have been nominated, then you have four losers later, pretending to be happy. It’s all bullshit. What’s more important is to keep trying, and to consistently deliver the best you have to offer.”
