Giancarlo Esposito Shares Advice for Aspiring Actors

Giancarlo Esposito opens up about his acting career, how he approaches acting, and in the process shares advice for aspiring actors.

Breaking Bad, Do The Right Thing, and Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito was nominated for two Emmy Awards this season. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about how his career has grown over the years, Esposito talked about how actors measure their worth as performers and spoke openly about his working relationship with Jonathan Banks.

When asked to comment on his acting career, which includes requesting for more episodes for his character in his first Breaking Bad season because he felt the character deserved a better storyline, Esposito reflects on his early acting career when he wasn’t well compensated for his acting. He explains:

“Well, it’s a difficult one for an actor who comes from the theater. Who virtually rode my three-speed Raleigh down to the Atlantic Theater Company every single day to go and do a play, avoiding the subway, eating rice and beans because I was macrobiotic at the time. I was wearing used clothing because I couldn’t afford to have a whole full new wardrobe. It taught me that the one important thing is the work I do, and that no price can be put on that. If it is as important to me to fulfill my obligation in preparing a character, then that is the creative work that I do, and it’s the gift that I’ve been given. So I look at it that way. So, is there any price that can be put on that? Is there any price that can be put on the moving feeling I have after doing a play and having someone come backstage and be in tears because they were so moved by my performance? There’s no price that can be put on that. However, I do understand the nature of suffering for my art, and I do understand how much actors embrace that. We have to suffer to be able to do what we love, but I’m in a position in my life now where I feel like the reward is that I can walk away if I don’t feel like the offer is commensurate with where I’m at right now in my life and career.”

Esposito also commented on his working relationship with his Breaking Bad co-star, Jonathan Banks. He considered the two of them come from very two different acting approaches.

“We never vow to come together or to be apart. We never make that decision. We get in the corner together when we have a lot of words to say, and we just do the words, so we can at least know where we’re going. But we don’t really have any clue of, emotionally, where we’ll be left at the end of the scene, which is always exciting to have that feeling with another actor. And I absolutely love it. And so, we’ve created a safe space for our communication on- and offscreen. And it’s good. It’s a really good place to be because we’re trying, more than anything, to listen. And when I listen to him, I hear Mike. As soon as he steps on set, I see Mike. I see this beaten-down guy who’s lost. “

In the end, he praises Banks for his working relationship. “I adore working with him and never know what to expect, but I am always attentive. And my intention is to go along for the ride, so we’ve had some incredible moments together.”

Tyler Perry Delivers Powerful Personal Story as He Receives Governors Award at 2020 Emmys

Tyler Perry was the recipient of a special honor at the 2020 Emmy Awards.

During Sunday’s virtual ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the entertainment mogul was given this year’s Governor’s Award. Perry, 51, was chosen by the Television Academy’s Board of Governors for his achievements in television and his commitment to offering opportunities to marginalized communities through the Perry Foundation and other philanthropic programs.

Oprah Winfrey and Chris Rock presented the award to Perry.

“This is amazing. I didn’t expect to feel this way,” he said.

“When I was about 19 years old, I left home and my grandmother, she gave me a quilt that she had made,” he said. “And this quilt was something I didn’t really care for. It had all these different colors and these different patches in it. And I was quite embarrassed by it. I had no value in it at all.”

But several years later, Perry was walking by an antique store and saw a similar quit. He recalled how the salesperson told him the story of the quit, which came from a freed slave woman.

“I became so embarrassed,” he said. “Here I was, a person who prides myself on celebrating our heritage, our culture, and I didn’t even recognize the value in my grandmother’s quilt. I dismissed her work and her story because it didn’t look like what I thought it should. Now, whether we know it or not, we are all sewing our own quilts with our thoughts, our behaviors, our experiences, and our memories.”

He added, “I stand here tonight to say thank you to all of the people who are celebrating and know the value of every patch, and every story, and every color that makes up this quilt that is our business, this quilt that is our lives, this quilt that is America.”

“Because in my grandmother’s quilt, there are no patches that represented Black people on television,” he said. “But in my quilt, her grandson is being celebrated by the Television Academy. I thank you for this. God bless you.”

Tyler Perry is a self-made entertainer and is behind 22 feature films, over 20 stage plays, 13 television shows, several bestselling books and the massive Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tyler Perry launched his first sitcom, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, 2007. With over 250 episodes, the show aired more episodes than any other series with a predominately Black cast. He has since written and directed and produced over 1,2000 episodes of TV and his movies have made more than $1 billion in the U.S. box office.

Perry opened his first studio in Atlanta in 2008, the operations have grown to over 330 acres of land in Georgia. Recently, he launched a new initiative with “Camp Quarantine”, which allows him to film new seasons of his BET and BET+ shows during the pandemic.

The Governors Award debuted in 1978 and honors people or organizations in the TV arts and sciences whose achievement is so exceptional and universal in nature that it goes beyond the scope of annual Emmy Awards recognition. Previous recipients include Star TrekAmerican Idol; William S. Paley; Hallmark Cards Inc.; Masterpiece TheaterComic Relief; and ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and A+E Networks.

In relevant news, the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was virtually hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the first time ever due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic. This year’s big winners include Euphoria star Zendaya, who became the youngest lead actress drama winner for her role as Rue. Meanwhile, Watchmen’s Regina King won their fourth Emmy each.

New Study Shows Little Progress for Diversity in 13 Years of Hollywood Movies

0

A new University of Southern California diversity study shows little progress for inclusion in 13 years of Hollywood movies.

A new University of Southern California study shows Hollywood movies continue to lack diversity and inclusive representation of racial and ethnic groups, women, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.

The report, Inequality in 1,300 Popular Films, was issued Thursday by Stacy L. Smith and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Smith, whose team creates multiple studies of every year about the film industry, describes her latest study focused on Hollywood films examining 57,629 characters in 1,300 top films from 2007 to 2019.

The study shows only a little progress in achieving inclusion and underrepresented groups amid ongoing protest for racial justice in America.

For example, most casting directors are white women. Across 1,300 films, the demographic breakdown of casting directors are: 17.9% white men, 71% are white women, 1.7% are underrepresented men, and 9.4% are underrepresented women.

“This is a critical moment for the industry to commit to real and substantive change,” Smith said in a statement. “Too often, the results of studies like this one garner attention without action.

“As protests for racial justice continue, it is imperative that companies move beyond performative statements and commit to taking actions that will result in inclusive hiring practices on screen and behind the camera.”

Smith said the study shows an overall ecosystem in which girls, women, and people of color are marginalized and minimized.

“After 13 years, it is not clear what might convince entertainment companies to change,” she said. “Despite public statements, the data reveal that there is still apathy and ambivalence to increasing representation of speaking characters overall in popular films. This is both the easiest representational gap to address and one that is essential to strengthening the pipeline to more prominent roles.”

She recently told USA Today she is not optimistic about the new Academy Award rules will help.

“It’s fair to say that the industry has already met the criteria outlined by the Academy,” Smith said. “So this doesn’t move us farther in the conversation or alter access and opportunity; it reflects the status quo.

“These standards aren’t aspirational or transformative, which is what would be necessary to move inclusion forward in this industry. My concern is that the standards create false hope that things will change when they reflect business as usual.”

Here’s a critical breakdown of findings:

  • 1. An increase in leading and co-leading characters from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, from 27 films in 2018 to 32 films in 2019.

  • 2. An increase in movies that featured a girl or woman from an underrepresented group as a lead or co-lead character: 17 movies in 2019 compared to 11 in 2018, 4 in 2017, and 1 in 2007.

  • 3. A slight uptick in the number of films featuring a girl or woman in a leading or co-leading role: 43 of 2019’s 100 top films, compared to 39 in 2018. The gain was more extensive compared to 2007 when only 20 films featured a girl or woman.

  • 4. But only three movies in 2019 had a leading or co-leading role filled by a woman age 45 or older, and only one of these roles went to a woman of color, the study found.

  • 5. 65.7% of all speaking characters were white, 15.7% were black, 4.9% were Hispanic/Latino, 7.2% were Asian, and 6.6% were other.

  • 6. 15 films had no black or African American speaking characters. 44 films have no Hispanic/Latino speaking characters. 36 films had no Asian speaking characters.

  • 7. The study also showed out of the 100 top films of 2019, only 2.3% of characters had a disability, a figure that has not changed in half a decade.

Another finding is that only 1.4 of all characters in the top films of 2019 were from the LGBTQ community. Also, from 2014 to 2019, only four characters were transgender and had little impact on the plot of the movie, appearing on screen for only two minutes in total.

Invisibility Analysis

The study also revealed an “invisibility analysis.” The analysis was conducted to find how many movies, including speaking characters from underrepresented populations.

“Invisibility Analysis” research found 33 films were missing Black girls or women on screen. Fifty-five films were missing Asian or Asian American girls or women. Seventy-one films were missing Hispanic/Latinas, and 45 were missing girls or women from multiracial/multiethnic backgrounds.

Those numbers were far worse for underrepresented groups, including American Indian/Alaskan Native characters (97 movies), Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander characters (99 films), and Middle Eastern/North African characters (92 movies).

“The erasure of girls and women from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, the LGBTQ community, and those with disabilities remain a hallmark of top-performing Hollywood films,” Smith said in her statement.

The report also looked into the inclusion and diversity behind the camera. For example, of the 1,447 directors over the last 13 years, 4.8% were women, with 2019 being a high point.  But only 6.1% of directors were Black, 3.3% were Asian, and 3.7% were Hispanic/Latino.

In 2018, the percentage of Black directors rose, then dropped. But only 13 women of color directed a top movie across 1,300 movies in 13 years.

Netflix is leading the way in diversity and inclusion

The report encourages studios to look at Netflix’s approach to hiring and casting.

“In contrast to our findings on top-grossing films, 20.7% of Netflix directors of U.S.-based films in 2019 were women,” Smith said. “The legacy studios may want to take a note out of the streaming giant’s playbook on how to hire more inclusively behind the camera.”

The report looked at how studios and mini-major distributors performed across each diversity indicators. Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures led on 6 of the 19 indicators in the study. Walt Disney Studios did not show any inclusion indicators in 2019. However, Disney’s female-centered films were box-office front runners. They outpaced other studios with more than $4 billion earned globally on stores featuring girls and women and an additional $2.7 billion for stories with underrepresented leads/co-leads.

“While the studios still have room to improve on inclusion overall, it is clear that an economic incentive may be one reason to do so,” Smith said.

In relevant news, Anthony Mackie, the actor who plays Falcon in several Marvel movies reveals in an interview that Marvel movies all have had a white production crew and the company needs to work on diversity.

Anthony Mackie recently opened up about his experiences playing Falcon in Marvel movies. During an interview with Daveed Diggs for Variety’s Actors on Actor, Mackie discussed how the Black Lives Matter movement is putting a spotlight on diversity in Hollywood.

ABC Announces Erin Brockovich-Inspired Drama ‘Rebel’ Starring Katey Sagal

ABC announces a new Erin Brockovich inspired drama called Rebel, which will star Katey Sagal.

Inspired by the real-life Erin Brockovich, Sagal will star as Annie “Rebel” Bello, a blue-collar legal advocate who does not have a law degree. ABC describes the character as “a funny, messy, brilliant and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves,” according to the network. “When Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in; she will win almost any cost.”

The TV series was written by Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff and will debut in 2021.

John Corbett, James Lesure, Lex Scott Davis, Tamala Jones, Ariela Barer, Kevin Zegers, Sam Palladio, and Andy Garcia also star.

ABC Signature produces the series in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.

“Erin Brockovich has never stopped the extraordinary work she does fighting for her clients like they’re family, and Krista Vernoff’s take on her life today in ‘Rebel’ is undeniable,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said in a statement. “Katey Sagal is a powerhouse as ‘Rebel’ and with Andy Garcia, John Corbett and the rest of the phenomenal cast, viewers are going to fall in love with these characters and the world Krista has created for them.”

“The work that Erin Brockovich does in this world is so powerful and so important that it almost defies description,” added Vernoff. “Erin works tirelessly for social, legal, and environmental justice despite the lack of a formal degree. She inspires everyone she meets to become their own heroes, and somehow, she also keeps us laughing. It has been a tremendous honor to get to know Erin and to create a show inspired by her. I am thrilled to be working with a dream cast led by the extraordinary Katey Sagal with the incredible Tara Nicole Weyr directing. I could not be more excited about the series order for ‘Rebel,’ and I’m so grateful for the support of Dana Walden, Karey Burke, Craig Hunegs, Jonnie Davis, and all my partners at Walt Disney Television and ABC.”

“‘Rebel’ is not just my story, it is all of our stories,” said Brockovich. “There is a hero that exists in all of us, and I am so excited for Krista Vernoff and ABC to bring their visionary storytelling to this series. The name ‘Rebel’ oozes self-empowerment, courage, and rising above, even in the worst of circumstances. I cannot think of anyone better to play this role than the indomitable Katey Sagal, who is such a force, as well as the rest of this extraordinary cast.”
