Job Description

Montpelier Historic Site & Museum is casting non-union men and women for upcoming paid staged readings of Crossing a Deep River: A Ritual Drama in Three Movements, written by Dr. Joanne M. “Jodi” Braxton and directed by Lashawnda Iyá Ifáníkẹ Batts. The ensemble production explores the survival of African people in the New World and the transformative power of memory, storytelling, and ritual in addressing historical trauma. Selected performers will work as part of an ensemble to bring this culturally rooted theatrical work to life.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform as part of the ensemble in staged readings of Crossing a Deep River.
• Interpret dramatic material with emotional depth and cultural sensitivity.
• Participate in spoken, musical, and ensemble performance elements.
• Collaborate with the director and fellow performers.

Requirements

• Open to non-union men and women.
• Strong acting and ensemble performance skills.
• Prepare a 1-minute monologue for the audition.
• Prepare 32 bars of a Negro spiritual, Orisa song, or Akan spiritual song.
• Comfortable working with themes involving African history, memory, survival, ritual, and historical trauma.
