The Senior Art Director, Signage, is responsible for the development and art direction of Sur La Table’s in-store marketing, display signage, print marketing for signage. This role requires a creative leader capable of selling solutions to business partners, staying current on design and retail trends, strong attention to detail, excellent knowledge of print production, and people management skills. Reporting to the Creative Director, the Senior Art Director will collaborate with Visual Merchandising, Brand Marketing, Culinary Ops, Art Directors, Copywriters, and Project Managers. This hybrid role is based in Seattle, WA with onsite required one day per week, or as needed, to review signage mockups and printed proofs.
What you get to do every day:
- Manage a small team of designers and freelancers demonstrating strong, inspirational, and relevant creative thinking. Ensure the team delivers on business objectives, on time, and budget. Occasionally help with project design files as needed.
- Partner with the visual merchandising team to drive the creative of monthly and seasonal sign kits and floor sets for promotions, product launches, and cooking schools.
- Ensure brand and visual identity consistency for all in-store signage and marketing materials.
- Work closely with print vendors to ensure accurate production, including a monthly print quality review for color-matching and material quality.
- Contribute to developing seasonal style guides to ensure visual consistency across in-store, online, and marketing channels.
- Partner with the project manager to assign work to the design team, contractors, or oneself to maintain the timely completion of projects.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements—partner with the project manager and business partners to implement change and innovation.
- Establish templates, guidelines, and best practice documentation.
- Use project management system, Wrike, for end-to-end workflow and ensure the design team consistently adheres to processes.
- Stay current with the competitive landscape and emerging trends, and incorporate this learning into the work.
- Foster a culture of creativity, excellence, accountability, testing, and learning.
- Responsible for learning the financial end-of-month process and owning parts of the creative budget in collaboration with the Creative Director and other Art Directors.
What you bring to the role:
- Bachelor’s degree in art, design, marketing, or related field
- 5+ years of experience as an Art Director in-house or at a creative agency
- Experience in retail signage across a fleet of locations
- 2+ years of people leadership, including delegating tasks, providing mentorship, and giving feedback regularly.
- Advanced knowledge of print production, best practices, templates, and die lines.
- Organized, self-starter who excels at prioritizing and planning multi-stakeholder initiatives and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong business acumen with exceptional strategic thinking, analytical, and project management skills, including a bias for action.
- Strong attention to detail is required for success.
- Ability to create effective relationships, influence, and collaborate at all organizational levels.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to lead, facilitate, and present to large groups and senior leadership.
- Experience driving innovation while executing creative work within scope, time, and budget parameters.
- Advanced experience in Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), project management tools, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint presentation design.
