Casting Call for SAG Short Film “ASHA” – Lead, Supporting & Background Roles

Job Description
A SAG short film titled ASHA, directed by Moitri Ghosh and produced by Nekisa Cooper, is casting lead, supporting, and background roles. Filming will take place in the Atlanta, GA area. This deeply emotional story explores intergenerational trauma, cultural identity, and the path to reconciliation through the strained relationship between a mother, her daughter, and her granddaughter.

Job Responsibilities

• Portray assigned roles with emotional nuance and cultural sensitivity

• Attend scheduled in-person rehearsals and on-set filming dates

• Collaborate with the creative team to deliver authentic, grounded performances

• For background roles, maintain realism in non-speaking scenes with physical presence

Requirements

• Local hires only (Atlanta, GA and surrounding areas)

• Must be available for in-person rehearsal on April 24

• Shoot dates: April 26–27 (role-specific work days vary)

Available Roles

ASHA (Lead)

• Indian-American woman, early 30s, lesbian

• A disciplined, sensitive mother with a military-like presence who hides deep emotional wounds

• Must portray complex emotional layers; strong lead presence required

• Works 3 days

MAYA (Supporting)

• Indian-American woman, early 60s

• A retired musician, free-spirited but grounded, who seeks reconciliation after estrangement

• Must capture warmth, regret, and quiet strength

• Works 3 days

SHIV (Supporting)

• Indian-American or half-Indian-American girl, 10 years old

• Naturally outgoing except around her mother, shy and musically gifted

• Must be able to convey subtle emotional shifts and innocence

• Works 3 days

VIC (Supporting)

• Transgender man, any ethnicity, mid-30s

• Grounded and loving husband navigating emotional complexities with his wife Asha

• Must have presence and vulnerability

• Works 3 days

Delivery Persons (Background)

• Any ethnicity, any gender

• Non-speaking role, struggles with delivering a piano

• Headshot pull only

• Works 1–2 days

Compensation

• Paid at SAG scale

• All roles follow union guidelines
