Issa Rae started working on a comedy series pilot with the show’s co-creator in 2013. The show was supposed to be about the awkward experiences of modern African-American women. The duo eventually landed on the title of Insecure. HBO picked up the pilot in early 2015, and it was greenly for production.
The first season centered around the story of the black female experience from two different views. Issa Rae and Molly (Yvonne Orji), who have been best friends since college. Both in their late 20s, they navigate their career and relationships while in their hometown of Los Angeles. The two are close and throughout the show, they deal with struggles between themselves and others. Issa works at a non-profit that helps middle-schooled students from underserved populations. She struggles to keep up the relationship with her boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis), who has become lazy after his start-up failed. Molly is a corporate attorney who is successful but struggles to date men. The 30-minute series explores social and racial issues that impact the black experience.
