What is a Monologue?
A monologue is a section or piece that is written for stage or film. It is commonly used to illustrate your talent to agents, casting directors, producers, and directors. Ultimately, it demonstrates what you can do as an actor. A good monologue will show your strengths, what role you can play, and who you are as a person.
Nothing is more crucial to your monologue than choosing the right one for your type and skill level. It is important to note that a monologue audition is your opportunity to showcase your talent—your time to shine. This is probably one of very few situations where the actor has a complete control of the situation.
Finding a Monologue
For an aspiring actor, finding the right monologue could be a hard and arduous task. Remember, keep your monologue simple. DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN MONOLOGUES.
Also, pick a monologue for a character you can easily play, some that is your age, and your type. Do not use accents or dialects, because you want the casting directors to be able to understand you without having a problem. Also your monologue should be contemporary, and written in the last twenty years, unless, stated otherwise by the casting directors.
Remember to have at least two monologues ready to go for the casting director. They should be two different types of monologues. One should be comic while the other is more dramatic. Nothing is better than having several monologues, ready to at a moment’s notice. The more prepared you are for an audition, the more confident you will be.
Keep your monologues short. 90 seconds is the perfect amount of time to showcase your acting talent. Do not worry, casting directors will be able to detect what they need to see immediately. You are only showing them a sample of your work.
