Everything You Need To Know About ‘Vikings: Valhalla’ On Netflix

Valhalla is an upcoming Netflix Original historical drama created by Michael Hirst and a spin-off of the popular History Channel program Vikings. Like its predecessor, which aired for six years on History, MGM Productions will produce the series.
However, it will not be available in the United States and the United Kingdom until at least 2024.
We’ve also learned that the program was given a large episode order ahead of time. It will reportedly span at least three seasons and include 24 episodes.
Hirst’s curiosity about whether the forthcoming season will match Vikings in scale and scope was satisfied by his remarks, which included: “The world is altered in the prequel. I can’t wait to see how things change.”
“It couldn’t be on a greater scale than the final episodes of my Vikings. Because of the armies and the big battles we had… You really can’t get much bigger than that. But what can I say? It is being made in the same places, a lot of it. We go back to Kattegat. That, of course, is the spiritual home of the Vikings. But it’s a changed Kattegat. It’s established… It’s one of the biggest ports really, trading ports in Europe. It’s grown in size and significance. The King of England has become a Viking. The Vikings have overrun most of England and they own Normandy.”
Jeb Stuart, who is perhaps best recognized for his work on films such as The Fugitive from 1993, Die Hard from 1988, and The Liberator for Netflix, has been tapped to script.

First Looks at Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix
We’ve had two first looks at the show. On June 7th, 2021, Netflix hosted Geeked Week with a preview of Vikings: Valhalla. Then on May 30th, 2020, the lid was lifted on the upcoming show.
We got our first look at footage from the new series at Geeked Week. We also found out that Travis Fimmel, who played Ragnar Lothbrok on Vikings, will make a cameo appearance in Valhalla.
The clip shown during Geeked Week began with Astrid (Alexandra Uldall), daughter of the legendary Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), as she is baptized and given her new name: Freydis. It’s during this ritual that we’re introduced to some of the other key players in the series, including Ivar The Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) and Guthrum (Darren Cahill).
Are Vikings on Netflix? Will it come to Netflix if it’s not?
Netflix’s regions have had access to all six seasons over the last several years, but two major countries still lack it. In the summer of 2021 that Netflix will offer the original Vikings series in those two areas, but not until 2024/2025. In the US and UK, Seasons 1-6 of Vikings will be available on Netflix on February 25th.
What is the plot of Vikings: Valhalla?
Over a century after the conclusion of the Vikings, the Viking age draws to a close as the Kingdom of England fights off Scandinavian invaders. After King Edward the Confessor’s death, three lords vie for power over England, altering its destiny dramatically.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hirst talked about how Valhalla will connect to the previous Vikings series, revealing that we will see a lot of the same locations: “We’ll be visiting some of the places from the original program,” he explained.
“What Jeb [Stuart] does is he pays attention to the mythology of the Vikings. So whenever they meet in the great hall in Kattegat, and of course, they talk about the great eras who used to sit in the same hall at the same table, and they were Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha, Bjorn Ironside, and Ivar the Boneless, who are now mythic characters even within the show, even within Vikings: Valhalla. That’s a great connection and effect. It gives ready-made histories to the new show. So you don’t need to know who Ragnar is to watch the new show. But it enriches the show and it hopefully will make people go back and find out, ‘Well who are these people they keep talking about? Was Ragnar so great? Why are these people mythic characters?’ So everything connects in a useful, interesting, and fascinating way.”
The Netflix home page has been updated with the following description: “The trailer for season two of 13 Reasons Why, a TV series based on Jay Asher’s young-adult novel, was released. It is also confirmed that Clay Jensen will return as the main character in this new season.”

On January 21, 2021, Deadline announced the main and recurring cast members of Vikings: Valhalla and their character descriptions.
In the mid-nineteenth century, Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) is a Greenlander born on the outskirts of Earth’s known territory. He comes from a large close family that adheres to ancient pagan customs. Leif is our gateway into a Viking realm going through tremendous change, a brave sailor and physically robust.
Freydis Eriksdotter, who is played by Frida Gustavsson (The Witcher), is a fiercely pagan woman with a short temper. She adheres to the old gods wholeheartedly. Like her brother Leif, she comes to Kattegat as an outsider but becomes a role model for those of the old religion. Frida was one of the few actresses we saw who could believably play opposite Travis Fimmel.
Harald Hardrada (Adam Copeland), King of Norway, is a man driven by his desire for power, glory, and revenge. He invades England to claim what he sees as his rightful throne, becoming one of its most feared and notorious kings.
William the Conqueror (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Duke of Normandy, is a complex and enigmatic man. He is both loved and loathed by the people he conquers – he is a ruthless warrior and a leader with a sense of justice.
Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), who Alyssa Sutherland played in the first four seasons of Vikings, is a fierce and fearless warrior. She is married to Ragnar Lothbrok and mother to Bjorn Ironside and Ivar the Boneless.
Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), played by Jordan Patrick Smith, is the eldest son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Lagertha. He is a natural leader and a brave warrior, qualities that help him to emerge as the new Earl of Kattegat after his father’s death.
Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen), played by Jade Eshete, is the son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Aslaug. He is disabled and unable to walk, but his ambition and intelligence are unrivaled. He is known as Ivar the Boneless because he was thrown into a river as a child and left to die, but he survived and was nursed back to health by a kind widow.
Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), who Gabriel Byrne played in the first four seasons of Viking, is a complex and controversial character. He is a brave warrior and respected leader, but he is also a man with many secrets.
Harald Sigurdsson, the hero of Norwegian sagas (The Liberator), will be played by Yoann Suter (The Liberator). Harald is one of the last Viking berserkers. He can bring together followers of Odin and Christians because he is charismatic, ambitious, and attractive.
King Canute is played by Bradley Freegard (Keeping Faith). The king of Denmark. A wise, clever, and ruthless Viking ruler. In the 11th century, his goals will shape history’s course, making him a key figure in the Vikings’ history.
Olaf Haraldson is the half-brother of Harald, according to Icelandic custom. He is a stern and unforgiving Viking who is physically huge and ambitious. Olaf is an Old Testament Christian.
Emma of Normandy, played by Berlin (Breaking Even) is a young, ambitious Norman from the royal court and one-quarter Viking. Emma of Normandy is intelligent and one of Europe’s wealthiest women. She is most likely a descendant of Rollo, the founder of the Vikings dynasty in the original series.
Earl Godwin is played by David Oakes (The Borgias). The ultimate survivor. Counselor to the King of England and head counselor. His slick strategies have taken him a long way thanks to his political beginnings. David was one of several cast members who were revealed over the previous few months.
Jarl Haakon will be portrayed by Caroline Henderson (Christmas Star). Haakon, a great warrior and tolerant ruler, Kattegat with an iron fist. Though she was a Pagan, she successfully preserved Kattegat as a city open to all religions during a difficult period. Freydis will look up to her for guidance.
Queen Ælfgifu of Denmark returns as Calculating and ambitious. Queen Ælfgifu of Denmark has a hand in the political power struggles unfolding throughout Northern Europe. She employs her charm and guile to significant effect, leveraging her position as Canute’s queen to advance the interests of her Mercian nation and assert herself in his growing empire.
Thorfinn Karlsefni is played by George Blagden (Versailles). Thorfinn is a man of the land, practical and determined. He’s not interested in power or wealth, but he is attracted to Freydis – a woman with an intensity that rivals his own.
Will anyone from the original Vikings appear in the new series?
Yes, and the first and most notable actor from Vikings that will appear in Valhalla is John Kavanagh as confirmed by his agency CV. He portrayed the Ancient Seer throughout all six seasons of Vikings and started appearing in some characters’ visions. We assume he will occur in dreams in Valhalla as well.
Other cast members from Vikings that will appear in Valhalla include Karen Connell, Bosco Hogan, and Gavan O’Connor Duffy. Connell appeared in Vikings as the Angel of Death so we assume she will have the same role as well, while Hogan and Duffy will have entirely new roles. In Vikings, they appeared as Abbot of Lindisfarne and King Frodo respectively.
Who else is involved with Vikings: Valhalla?
Beyond the cast we know of a few other crew members working on the show:
- Steve Saint Leger is currently pegged to direct three episodes of season one. He’s not only directed several episodes in the main Vikings series but also is set to direct in Netflix’s Barbarians arriving in late 2020.
- Niels Arden Oplev, the BAFTA-winning Danish director who helmed episodes for such series as Mr. Robot and Under the Dome is also set to direct one or more episodes for the first season of Valhalla.
- Hannah Quinn has also been confirmed to be among the directors of the first season of Vikings: Valhalla. Her most recent works include Fate: The Winx Saga and The Stranger, both on Netflix.
- Trevor Morris who serves as the composer for much of season six of Vikings will return for Valhalla. His other credits include The Tudors and Hunter Killer.
What is the production status of Vikings: Valhalla?
Episodes have been commissioned and are now in production. Series 1 and 2 have already been wrapped (Last Updated: November 2021).
Pre-production for Vikings: It was announced in May 2019 that filming on Valhalla would begin later that year, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Fortunately, it was restarted in July 2020, and we now know filming has begun at Ashford Studios, Ireland. We don’t know how long filming will continue, but originally it was anticipated to last until late 2021.
Post-production will then take place afterward, and the series will likely be released in early 2022.
We’re now up to episode 3 in the new series of Vikings: Valhalla. As we mentioned before, John Kavanagh will be appearing as the Ancient Seer, a character he portrayed throughout all six seasons of the original Vikings series. In this episode, we see him appearing in a vision to Freydis (played by Karen Gillan) as she tries to come to grips with her new role as queen.
Where were Vikings: Valhalla filmed?
Pre-production has resumed, and the site is a favorite destination for Vikings fans: Ashford Studios in Wicklow, Ireland. This is where the flagship program was filmed.
In conclusion, after filming on the final season of Vikings was completed, Ashford Studios secured permission for a €90 million development so they may construct five new studios and support space. This will most likely affect the production quality of Vikings: Valhalla.
We may anticipate finding many of the same crew working on the Viking’s spinoff since Valhalla is the main production base. We can also expect to see several of the original cast members return.
How many episodes will Vikings: Valhalla air?
It has been confirmed that Vikings: Valhalla will have 24 episodes over three seasons. We know the series has been ordered in three seasons, so we anticipate each season to last eight episodes.
